Possible Solution to Code P0303

For about a year, I have been dealing with random miss fire that has really been a devil to solve. There has seemingly been no loss of power and the economy appeared to hold up. I did all the usual, i.e. swap plugs and coils with other cylinders to try and move the condition. Still the same result. Just this last month, I happen to be reading my factory manual, which stated that a random miss fire code does not necessarily indicate a problem with the ignition. I don't know why I had not seen this earlier. But, I began to research what other components can cause miss fire and discovered that the camshaft position sensor could be a culprit. Since the car has 100,700 miles on it now, and the part is only $20-something I decided to replace it. At the very least I have a new component which I know is good. Replacing the sensor seems to have solved my problem! The car is more responsive, I am picking up fuel economy, the engine idles so sweet and quiet that you can barely detect it running and I just today rescanned my computer and found no codes resident or pending--a real step forward! This may be a solution for someone else, so I am passing it along. I really hope this helps.

P0303 is not random misfire, it is cylinder #3 misfire. P0300 is random misfire.

That's the problem with scan tools. They will give you a very general description with the code number. Sometimes that description can even point you in the wrong direction to the problem.
All that you should be concerned with is the actual code number.

Well I was skeptical, but I just swapped out the CPS's as well. I had a code P0301 (cylinder 1) and since the swap the code has not reappeared. Craaazzzyyy....or is it ?

Cool - good to hear a confirmation man.

I think it does make sense - I think the sensor is tied into the timing adjustment from what limited smarts I have on it.

Nothing else has fixed the problem. It has worked for two other folks. Worth a shot.
