engine oil filler tube rusting?
We just bought our HHR last week and did an oil change, when we pulled the cap off the metal on the cap and the inside of the tube itself were covered in rusty powder.
Has anyone else had this ? Is this caused by something other than water getting in or...?
TIA

Been awhile since I changed my oil,
so forgive me if i am having a senior moment.
Maybe something other than rust...?
Did you buy the car used? must be, otherwise why r u changing the oil..?

Rusting plastic? That's why I decided to find out if anyone else had it happen. Doesn't appear to have any water damage to it or the engine (looks and runs great) but my wife suggested that maybe someone didn't tighten it properly and the rust is merely 'hanging on like fungus."
This stuff is covering the inside "plug" of the cap and the entire interior of the tube. It's is orange (rust colored) and powdery and has the same texture as rust (looks identical to some metal I have that is rusted. If there is something else that mimics rust, then maybe that's what it is.
We did get it used (2006) and its previous 1 owner had been in MT, CO, and WY.
We are having it replaced, but were just curious. This is the car my wife is driving and so far we like HHR very much. We're still thinking up a name.
Thanks - if the dealer can't figure it out when they replace it, I'll take a look into the test kit.

You should name it "Rusty"
Its a long shot but maybe the previous owner put in sometype of additive in the oil for whatever reason and this rust like stuff is it splashed up into the tube. Hey I said it was a long shot.
