Question Exhuast Cutouts

So I have scraped my idea of the side exhausts and have discovered exhaust cutouts and was immediately intrigued by the idea. I have found some electric cutouts but they are over $200 plus so then I went on the good 'ol google and went to see if anyone had made a DIY cutout and to my amazement people have. The most popular guy is the Miata guy that made one out of an old throttle body found HERE I was wondering if anyone here has put on a cut out or tried to make their own? If i can find a 2.5" throttle body i may just try this, my only question is i hear that throttle body's don't completely seal when closed but others say that they do.

Just looking for some input and curios to see what the community thinks.

Summit has these

Exhaust Cutouts - Free Shipping on Orders Over $99 at Summit Racing

Doug's has these

Doug's Headers DEC250AK 2-1/2" Electric Exhaust Cut-Out with Hook-Up Kit, Complete Kits - Amazon Canada Doug's Headers DEC250AK 2-1/2" Electric Exhaust Cut-Out with Hook-Up Kit, Complete Kits - Amazon Canada

eBay has these

2X 2 5" Mannal Electric Exhaust Catback Downpipe Cutout E CUT OUT Valve System | eBay

A wide range of prices and quality, now rigging up a throttlebody would almost be as expensive and not seal as well!
I've used cutouts with a cable to open and close a butterfly, but scraped the rig after numerous pull overs by the law!
Seems they don't like it when the exhaust isn't like factory all nice and sealed up, and a lot quieter!!

Thanks for the info Oldblue.

Seems odd that they would pull you over for that. The city I'm in we have quite a few Ricers that sound like they have no muffler at all... seems strange.

On a side note was the butterfly valve that you used air tight?

P.S i would be putting the cutout right before the muffler and after the resonator not at the downpipe like most people.

No, I used a butterfly from a scrap one barrel truck carb! I cut the carb above the butterfly and bolted it to a flange welded onto the pipe of pipe that y'd out of the exhaust pipes in front of the mufflers!
That was back in the '70's and coming home from St.Thomas drag strip, along Hwy 3 on the way home from a few runs!

Nice. I know that drag strip! Been past it before. If I'm not mistaken it is out Sparta way... Unless that is a completely different strip LOL

But I guess my main question with your butterfly is did it leak at all?

My only concern with that ebay one is how long the motor will last, and if it does fail could i pull the motor off and rig up a spring loaded manual control to it like a throttle body has?

Cut outs

I hate to say this, but if you can't afford a good quality electric cutout than you are gonna be hating life with a cheap one. Exhaust leaks not only sound like your car is a p.o.s. but the cops will get you too. I don't know how long the Chinese knock-offs of the Quick Time cutouts will last but that might be a solution. Building one that is acceptable would involve quite alot. Save your money till you can get a good one.
