Whats the best bang for the buck which subs do you all have that sound good and hit hard but wont brake your wallet? Is JL good? Which setup is best to make your HHR be heard from down the street? Thanks for your input. :one:

That's a tough one indeed! I'm running a bandpass box with 2 Audiobahn 10's fed by a monoblock amp with 300-watts @ 2-ohms.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/6/web/2178000-2178999/2178189_17_full.jpg

It's slammin' loud inside (ask anyone who'se been to the cruise nights!), but barely audible outside the HHR due to the great insulation. Roll the windows down though and it's a different situation...

IMO you are going to need at least 2-12's and about 600-1000 watts before they will hear you coming in an HHR. :thumb:

*BTW - I can tell you where to get a deal on the sub box I have - it is easily removed when you need to haul something.

I can't be heard down the street, that's way too loud for me now that I'm getting old. But I can speak for the quality and sound of Audiobahn.

get 2 alpine type r's 12 and the mrd-1005. that is what is going in my HHR with alpine 9855.

amp

subs

if you get that head unit and amp you can set your settings from the head unit itself. That is one of the reason why i went this route. it will be crazy loud when i want it to be and will be quite when it needs to be.

this amp is a good 4 channel amp that also works with the head unit, also will be getting this with type r comps all the way around.

I Have 2 premier 12" subs( enclosed in a slot ported box) each rated at 1200w max being powered by a memphis mono block amp rated at 1100w rms and i can be heard from a couple blocks, but i have no real usable cargo space anymore! :( Eventually i will replace the subs and go with the premier spl series subs when i go with the eclipse avn 5435 head unit.

The JL is nice but they want way to much for their subs. There are some good subs out there at a more reasonable price. Try pricing Kicker, Fosgate (not for me), JBL, or Infinity. My single 8" kicker CVR sounds better than most duel 10" subs.

18" sub?? Is there a rule of having a sub in your car that are bigger than your wheels? lol

adamlowery

lol. Sounds like a good rule. Id never do anything like that. Just thought it was crazy 10,000. The sub is 1500 and itd be double that just to power it.

Would basically turn your car into a Nuclear power plant on wheels. Where's Doc Emmett Brown? Maybe he can go back to the future and pick up some plutonium.

Anyone ever used the tube type sub with built in amp.
Audiobahn has several. Bazooka Tubes, and others.
Can it hook up direct to woofer in back for the audio signal?
This would be cheaper way to go for me...
Any experience with this set up even if it was in a different vehicle?

I've never messed with one. The best way would be to go somewhere that sells them and tell them you want to hear it befor you buy it.

That looks like atleast a 10 if not a 12. Are you running in off of a seperate amp?

Blah. Only active sub system I've ever liked is the Infinity Basslink.

Has hi level and low level inputs.

You don't have any clearance issues with the Kicker sub and factory Pioneer grille in place? My sub was rubbing up against it so that's part of the reason I switched to the Audoibahn flaming grille.

adamlowery
03-09-2006, 11:11 AM
Would it matter much if the sub is mounted on the inside or mounted to the plastic on the outside. Would it be a huge difference either way.

Were you able to use the wires to the old woofer or did you have to run a new one to stereo head?
Did you intall a amp? for the woofer?

Navyflyer11

I put a spacer around the sub to ensure clearence of the panel. I used a 10" foam ring from hobby lobby. Works great, and you can't see it through the grill. I used the output to the sub from the factory amp. To a line level converter into the amp.

I used a Orion HCCA 225 amp that I had in my old '85 mazda GLC. The amp was installed in the mazda in 1990. That make it 16 yrs old. That means its older than some of the members in this forumn. LOL.

Very cool. I need to amp mine but I keep getting side tracked on other projects. I am going to make adding an amp to my sub my next priority after I get all the stuff I just bought put on.

Holy same setup Navyflyer. Well almost. I took an old (5years or so) amp and mounted it in the EXACT same place, but I ran it to an old sub box I have with some old ass JBL speakers.

Just about anything you put in the back of the HHR is going to sound pretty good basewise, do to the layout of the vehicle (hatch style vehiclkes are great for bass).

I would stay away from bass cannons/tubes, but thats personal preference. They are just cheap, IMO. Anything sold at walmart, isnt high quality.

18" solobaric? Holy cow, you would blow the top off the car. I wouldnt mind replacing the factory sub with a solo and putting another solo on the other side in a baffle, come to think of it.

I like the Flamed Audiobahn grill, since I have flames on my HHR. :)
Will look into that. Youse guys are a big help and I do appreciate the input!
