View Full Version : 450 Miles on a Full Tank of Gas?
SIHHR 10-14-2005, 01:36 PM I love how they adverstise the HHR can do 450 miles before refulling. Whenever I full-up and check my full range afterwords it always says around 330 miles I can do. Has anyone seen 450 right after pumping out gas. Normally I get 280 to 300 miles before refueling. I drive half highway/half streets.
1BadPig 10-14-2005, 01:47 PM I wouldn't put too much faith in that. Theoretically if you coast into a gas station, the computer can calculate that as some ridiculously high MPG. So after you gas up, MPG X Gallons = High miles range. Just stump on the accelerator and see what happens.
adamlowery 10-14-2005, 02:46 PM I've had mine say well over 500miles before. But i normally dont accelerate over 3grand and 99% of my drivin is steady 45 or 55mph. I actually get over 500 miles to a tank if i do the math my self and not trust the computer although it is really close.
cowboybornlate 04-12-2006, 10:41 AM Revive an old thread here. I read all the new red dot ones so i looked through the old post and found this one. I get over 500 miles to a tank on a regular basis. I have not reset the MPG on the NIC since the day I bought mine Jan 28th '06. I do a ton of driving, mostly highway. I noticed that when mine gets down to the point that the fuel indicator comes on it will not show you how many miles are left. When I fill up, mine normally reads 500-530, but I'm also getting on average 30-31 MPG.
It was 10 weeks old Saturday, and I'm showing 14,303 miles. YIKES
CBL
txsman2930 04-12-2006, 11:36 AM The last time I checked, I was getting around 425 to 450 miles with my 2.2L on a full tank of guess. That's with some stop and go traffic. I hardly use the A/C right now, but I'm sure that gas mileage will drop a little bit come next month when the A/C will become a must, but I don't expect too much of a drop.
captain howdy 04-12-2006, 11:42 AM I'm lucky if I get over 300 miles per tank. But then again My DIC never displays more that 22 MPG.
adamlowery 04-12-2006, 11:50 AM I reset my mpg each tank and last tank it was 31.4 but my actual mpg was 32.0. I think I had 504 miles before I had to refuel.
captain howdy 04-12-2006, 11:54 AM You guys must drive like grandmas. My Mustang got better gas milage than my HHR and the engine had been modded.
RickyO 04-12-2006, 11:58 AM I get 450 a tank easily. I drive the highways and biways, not much city driving. average 32 mpg. Getting ready to turn 26,000 miles and no problems yet. the average would be higher if I drove 60-65 mph. You can watch it start to go down significantly when cruising over 75 mpg. I seem to get better mileage on regular. Every once in awhile I'll put some mid-grade in it.
Navyflyer11 04-12-2006, 12:13 PM My dic usually shows about 25 MPG and when I fill up its around 350 miles
coolsurf 04-12-2006, 12:25 PM I get 350 miles per tank, and that highway and city.
TomsHHR 04-12-2006, 01:30 PM I did a trip using premium and fueled with 30 miles left at 440 miles on the Odo. I sweated the last 20 miles...
KY Dave 04-12-2006, 01:41 PM I just filled up. 447 miles and 15.1 gallons = 29.60 mpg. That was highway and city driving. BY THE WAY, I thought we had a low fuel warning light that was supposed to come on. Did I dream reading that in the manuel??
scaleguy 04-12-2006, 02:06 PM I,m still too busy grinnin' about having my HHR, I haven't even checked the fuel range on a full tank!!! I did manage to check and got nearly 29 miles per gallon on my trip to Chicago...
adamlowery 04-12-2006, 02:17 PM You guys must drive like grandmas. My Mustang got better gas milage than my HHR and the engine had been modded.
I drive 75-80 on the highway. It's all flat road pretty much except for a mile or two of my drive to work and back.
captain howdy 04-12-2006, 02:32 PM I just filled up. 447 miles and 15.1 gallons = 29.60 mpg. That was highway and city driving. BY THE WAY, I thought we had a low fuel warning light that was supposed to come on. Did I dream reading that in the manuel??
Your DIC says low fuel across the screen. ;)
KY Dave 04-12-2006, 03:54 PM Dang, it must have to get pretty low. I probably only had about 1 gallon left. I guess when it says that, you gotta go quick.
dan-d 04-12-2006, 04:43 PM I've only got about 2k on my HHR but the DIC usually indicates around 28.8 - 29.4 mpg or so. I'm getting over the 450 per tank as advertised. I haven't run it low enough for the low fuel indicator to come on, but it's supposed to come on when you get down to about 3 gallons left in the tank. Most low fuel warnings are set to around 3 gallons for two reasons, one is to give you sufficient warning so you don't run out of gas, and secondly it's because your fuel pump relies on the gas to keep it cool and for lubrication so the manufactures don't want you to run it dry. My HHR has the 2.4 with a manual tranny, I also get better mileage using premium gas. I tried a tank of regular and my MPG dropped to just under 28 MPG. I also do about 50/50 highway and city driving and my wife tells me I have a lead foot because I tend to launch hard and push the upper limit's of around 10 MPH over the speed limit.
SoCalHHR 04-12-2006, 04:46 PM I've had the "LOW FUEL" display come on several times. It's around 1.5gals I think. At least that's what I gathered based on how much fuel I put in during the fillup. Even at 25mpg, that gives you over 40-miles to find a gas station!
deadhead 04-12-2006, 04:59 PM Just turned 1000 miles and I am getting between 24 and 25 mpg. 90 percent of my driving is highway and I am usually driving about 73 mph, overall pretty happy with mpg. should get a little better with some more breakin time and when the winds die down around here it has been windy as hell.
ng8650 04-12-2006, 05:25 PM I have 3600+ miles and my DIC usually say 400 miles at fill-up. I've had the low fuel light come on a couple of times. When the light comes on, it takes over your DIC.

Clarke33 04-12-2006, 05:58 PM I have 1200 miles on my HHR and just filled it up for the third time last night. The dealer gave me the first fill up. All my driving is combined city/highway driving and have been impressed with the mileage so far.
The first tank I got 25.4 MPG, the second tank got 26.7, and the last tank I had an even 28 MPG. I reset the DIC when I fill up and have checked it's figures against my calculator and they are very close to the same. Highway driving is usually between 70 and 80 MPH with a few 90 + thrown in. I don't feather foot it town either. Just for the record, I have a 2LT with the 5 speed.
I almost forgot to mention, I got 425.6 on my last tank of gas.
WA_HHR 04-12-2006, 07:14 PM my 2.4 /auto, is mostly city and also not a pedal featherer, and get almost 24 on cheap stuff. hasn't seen much highway time and not much noticable performance or mileage with mid or premium. bought it because it did run cheap stuff, my big 70' chrysler's 440 requires premium or it runs like s***!!
Lee3333 04-12-2006, 07:43 PM None of you guys know what city driving is. I have gotten as low as 14 mpg, but I am talking about CITY driving-New York City. When you are stuck in bumper to bumper gridlock for an hour, and go only several blocks, you are getting virtually 0 miles per gallon. Factor that in, and it kills your average mpg.
cowboybornlate 04-12-2006, 07:56 PM OUCH, that's why I live in the country Lee!! Mostly highway driving for me, very little bumper to bumper, 92 miles to my office one way and only the last 4-5 miles is city driving....

I didn't realize NY was the only city with traffic lights and bumper to bumper traffic!

COPYMAN NC 04-12-2006, 09:24 PM I just turned 4600 miles. Filled up today. 462.2 on 14.4 Gal. 32 miles per gallon. I love it, but yes Capt. I usually drive like an little old woman. But in the HHR I look good doing it.LOL

freshone 04-12-2006, 09:54 PM i usualy get 360 miles per tank with roughly an 1/8 tank left and the dic saying that i have 60 - 90 miles to go i only ran it once to where it said low fuel and was at 400 miles on trip counter
wheelsee 04-12-2006, 10:02 PM I didn't realize my DIC had a return button!
yeah it's the one with the little arrow...either of the two DIC buttons will clear it off of the low fuel message...

Miami city traffic is just as bad as NY. I don't think mine has said anything over 20 MPG. :( That could be because 75% of my driving is trips of less than 5 miles at a time. And sometimes it could take over 1/2 hour to go that far!

Yep 95 down by you does suck. I've been in traffic in Fort Lauderdale plenty of times before
cj krause 04-13-2006, 10:26 PM i have gotten 450 miles on a tank several times but i kept it under 75 and all freeway driving going to Tulsa and back on Thanksgiving. Did great there and back and no complaints.
i like to drive hard all the time so i get 20 to 22 in town w some driving on the toll road for like 5 to 8 miles and then all city. so it is more city.
the trips i have taken i have gotten no less than 25.7 running 75 to 90 with a headwind. got 28.5 coming back with a tail wind running 75 to 90 again. it was 560 each way and only used lil more than a tank and a half tank down there driving around.
if i drive really normal around town i have gotten 23 to 24 and will usually fill up around 300 to sometimes more so i am pleased
i bought the car for modding, fun, looks, the way i like to drive it so MPG was not really what i was looking for. i would have bought it if it got 15/20
or whatever.
SindyDix 07-02-2006, 12:09 PM bump....
Low fuel light on, fill up 15.57 gallons, trip 455.
The AZ Grand Canyon run will be a good test to see what I can get.
Who has gotten the most so far?
OldSalt 07-02-2006, 12:22 PM I just finished a trip from PA to Ohio, at 65-70mph and 12, 450 miles on the clock, I averaged 31.8mpg. So, yes 450miles on a tank is possible.
Harpozep 07-02-2006, 12:26 PM We are in the crowd which gets in the mid 300's per tankful. My wife does better than me  , but I am interested in getting the famed 30 plus MPG that some here report. I just does not happen on my watch!
My dad's Monte Carlo gets better MPG with his six CYL. I thought four banger's were better in the MPG dept than I am experiencing? I guess it is my foot!
I got mid twenties for years in the Corvairs and am doing no better now with a car designed forty years later
Oh well, The HHR is fun to drive. If all I wanted was MPG, there are plenty of smaller, noisier alternatives:D It has the right balance of ride, noise and fuel economy to keep me happy.:thumb:
tonydetiger 07-02-2006, 01:05 PM I'm averaging around 425 miles between fillups. MPG on the DIC is around 27-28. I'm just happy that the fuel mileage is in the range that Chevy reported. I'm my old SUV, I'd be lucky to get 22 MPG on the highway. Plus, I would have had to fill up the tank about twice a week.
BTW, do you guys notice any fuel mileage difference between 89 and 93 octane? I have the 2.4L, and I've noticed better mileage on 89.
thompy53 07-02-2006, 04:35 PM Our HHR is mostly suburban driven, DCI says ave speed = 38MPH, we average 28-31 MPG all the time (2.2L, auto) We see the 450+ on the DCI range often with fillup. Have not done any big trips yet. We also have a 05 Malibu base model with the 2.2L, it gets a bit better MPG, 30-32 local driving, we have seen 36 on a trip before. The Malibu is a bit more areo slick and possibly has a higher OD ratio, but the HHR is queiter and rides better. I like them both.
Mr.Z-06 07-03-2006, 01:12 PM Easily get 35 here hwy. Did 576 miles on last tank while traveling (even through the mountains - and yes, the low fuel warning was on the DIC when I finally filled!) Keep your foot out of the throttle, and it's amazing how much you can get.
cowboybornlate 07-03-2006, 03:18 PM I've not made any long distance trips or at least what I consider long distance trips in mine. I drive a minimum of 92 miles to the office one way and some days I put in up to 350 miles between visiting clients. My DIC says 48 average mph and 31.2 mpg. I have had it read up to 496 miles on fillup. I'm trying to break the 500 mark and will let y'all know when I do. Oh, I average low 70's mph on the freeway otherwise it starts heading downhill for me on mileage. To answer the original question of 450 miles per tank. I do it everyday..... as I fill up everyday needed or not. Gas is a dime cheaper where I live versus the big city.

Can't believe you drive that much on a daily basis. I did for about 3 months one time. I quit my job because I couldn't handle all that driving not to mention the gas, and that was 6 years ago. You da' man.
cowboybornlate 07-03-2006, 04:02 PM Well, before you go braggin too much, I get reimbursed for 90% of my gas so it makes life a lot easier on the budget! But it is still quite a bit of time on the road. I've been making the drive since Aug '05. Only 8 more years to go.... lol

cowboybornlate 07-05-2006, 11:26 AM I did it, I did it... I filled up Monday evening on the way home and the DIC read 516 miles!!! The more I drive it, the more I love it!

coolsurf 07-05-2006, 12:19 PM I get about 320 to 350 per tank with city and freeway driving with the lt2 auto with the larger motor.
cschhr06 07-05-2006, 12:24 PM we have the LS 2.2 Auto and average a lil under 400 a tank highway and about 300 city....... but we all have to remember its a 16 gallon tank. 300/400 is what i averaged in my nissan sentra 2.0 5 speed with a 11.9 gallon tank.

Airborne_Beachbum 08-09-2006, 07:38 AM Here's proof that the HHR can get the advertised 450 miles to the tank. I think I was getting about 26 MPG when I refuled at took a look at the estimated distance.

dudleyfamily 08-09-2006, 01:56 PM If your getting poor mpg in a new car just wait a while, it gets better. My LT1 average mpg is 27.6 This is at 50 mph average. The car has 3000 miles. Although most of my driving is at 80 mph + I drive a lot through Houston traffic and in the Med center everyday. 27 mpg is great compared to anything I ever owned.
riverwind 08-09-2006, 02:47 PM I filled up today, my second fill-up. 1Lt with a 2.4 & auto tranny. I used 14.2 gallons for 347.0 miles which is 24.44 mpg, which is also pretty close to what the dic said (24something). It was mostly in town driving. I'm looking forward to taking a trip in it to and see what I get on the highway.
At that rate, with 2 gallons left. (tanks are 16.2 gallons) if I would have driven the tank til it was empty it would have been just barley under 400 miles
KSH67 08-09-2006, 08:05 PM I'm getting between 400 and 450 in my 2.2 AT so far. When I put my foot in it or when I'm doing lots of city driving it dips a little but I've never gone below the 400 on a tank yet. Oh and by the way, when the sign comes on and says fuel low it means it. =)
Fritch 08-09-2006, 08:57 PM I went 460 miles the other day and had just under 1/4 tank left ;) on a 2.2 Auto
mudbilly 08-10-2006, 11:55 AM 2.4 with 5 speed manual.......
Filled my tank for the first time this morning on the way to work. I don't know what grade gas the dealer put in but it was full when I picked up the car. I filled up with 87 no-brand ($2.97/gallon). I didnt' notice any difference on the way to work. I even bogged it down in 5th and still didn't get any pinging.
I am real gentle on the throttle (I have a 73 Mustang for getting my jollies ;) )
I drove 454 miles on the dealer fill up (all with the AC on) and put in 15.29 gallons of gas(the low fuel message had just come on)........so I got 29.7 MPG :thumb:
