Here you get a pretty good view of the 3/4" Chrome Molding I added just above the running boards.
http://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/files/3/9/4/hhr8.jpg
I de-badged the back because I hate polishing around emblems. The GM Emblem on the side stayed because it's easy to polish around the square. :)

Also visible, my AVS In-Channel VentVisors... added to vent the car a bit in the summer or to let moisture evaporate when the weather is indescribably wet. No, I don't smoke. Here are a few closer views of the visors:
http://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/files/3/9/4/visors.jpg

...and here you see my stubby antenna from SoCalHHRs:
http://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/files/3/9/4/hhr5.jpg
... and you can kinda see the strip of 3/4" Chrome Molding above the windshield. I wasn't sure if I was going to keep it, but it's growing on me.

... and there's more

Here's the chrome bumper protector that I made because I didn't like any that were available (GM or elsewhere). IMO, the picture doesn't do it justice.
http://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/files/3/9/4/hhr-bumper.jpg
I made it out of 1-inch and 3/8-inch (modified) chrome molding and it turned out a lot nicer than I thought it would.

Picture outside of an abandoned car wash. In this picture, you can see the chrome above the windshield a little bit better.

In all of the above pics, the two front windows were tinted to the legal limit here. After a week or so, I decided way too much light was getting inside I'm used to tinted windows... but 8 windows (tinted or not) was letting in way more light than I was used to....sooo I put 20% tint over the factory tint in the back window.

You'd be shocked at how much darker ALL the windows looked just by darkening that back window up. I've since tinted the rear side windows (doing this as time allows). No pics of the new tint yet, but even without the back seat windows tinted, it's looking pretty nice and it doesn't really look like there's a dramatic difference in the tint percentages.

That's it for pics of the outside...

I covered the airbag decals and the ambient night light (meant to illuminate window controls).

That light drives me crazy, so I covered it.

The visors don't look upside down from the outside because you can't see them through my tint strip...

Created with Photoshop and printed with an inket printer. Not purchased.

1/8" chrome molding added to dress up interior door panels. Purchased at Pep Boys. One roll of 20' will do all four doors (with about 3 inches to spare).

Driver's Door (sorry the pic's not so great):

Passenger Door:
http://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/files/3/9/4/doorchrome2.jpg

And... the last 2 pictures (for now). The iPod install...
NOTE: See Post#51 of this thread for the new, improved iPod install.
The DLO TransPod Direct is WAY too big.

http://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/files/3/9/4/ipod.jpg
iPod Mount made out of a modified DLO Transpod Direct. With exception to the audio out plug seen in the this picture and a tiny bit of the aux wire plugged into the radio, no wires are visible.

The iPod is in a 'Sleevz' Titanium-colored case by RadTech.

http://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/files/3/9/4/ipod-driverview.jpg
The picture just above is the driver's viewpoint of the screen. This was the best location that wasn't very visible to the outside, let me see the iPod screen with my eyes still on the road AND let me access the iPod controls. It looks like the scroll wheel is blocked, but it isn't.

Before actually installing, it seemed that there was a better location, but clearance issues (depth) prevented access to the scroll wheel.

I'm still working on it... it's a tad rough around the edges (a bit of sanding, filling, and a repaint are in the near future).

The iPod itself is not visible from the outside of the car EXCEPT from the windshied-- you can just see the top.

I've created a hood that fits over it that shades it from the sun and completely hides the iPod from outside view. Needs to be painted - no pics yet. :)

Color is a close match to the car's interior. The Transpod is currently plugged into the end of a cigarette ligher extension cord behind the radio bezel and between the air vents. The cord runs behind the center stack, through the center console, then emerges just next to and then plugs into the 12v jack on the back of the center console (er, can't really call it a console, can I?). Eventually, I'll tap into the car's electrical and hide the plugged-in-jack. I really prefer to not have cords or plugs visible at all.

The aux in plug (into the radio) plugs in with a slim right-angle plug minijack, then slides behind the bezel around the radio, to the other side, then travels behind the dock to plug into the left side aux in jack on the TransPod.

I may completely hide the aux wire in the future, but not in the mood to mess with that right now.

The mount itself is made out of something-like-epoxy called RayCrete, though when compared to epoxy, it's very lightweight. The 'mold' (so it perfectly mounts to that area of the dash) was created with loosely-bundled aluminum foil, then covered in RayCrete, let dry, drilled holes, filled holes and covered in RayCrete, let dry... Repeat... until the mount volume was 75%+ solid epoxy-like material. It's pretty darn solid.

It's mounted to the dash with velcro for bricks. The mount is permanently attached to the back of the Transpod with epoxy.

Commercially available mounting solutions were much too deep to be used where I wanted, including Pro-Fit's LoBoy.

The Transpod itself has been seriously modified. It was disassembled and re-shaped. Holes were drilled in the back for a more solid connection to the mount. The light was completely blacked out (IMO, aside from blinkng alarm lights, any light on the dash screams "I have electronics in here, please steal me!" -- that's why I try to do somewhat stealth installs)... and it was painted.

Sorry no better pics of the iPod install from farther back. They'll come in time.

Also, I added aftermarket mats (Nifty Catch All Premium) to the front-- bought em before I bought the car because I heard how horrible the factory (especially the driver's side) mats were. I recently replaced the stock mats (I left them on top of the Catch All Mats) with the HHR all-weather (winter) Mats. The cargo mat was also replaced with the OEM all-weather Cargo Mat.

No pics of those yet, either. Soon.

That's all for now, I think. :)

Yeah, I have a grey interior as well-- look at the pics of my doors. The headliner and visors are some kind of cashmere/grey hybrid. Remember all the cashmere owners that were annoyed because their headliner was grey? I suspect it's a cost-saving thing for GM. I scanned a visor to match the color, so I'm pretty sure of this. :)

You are a bad man.

Thanks! I almost didn't buy the 1/8" molding when I found it because I wasn't sure where I could use chrome that slim. Bought it anyway and the next day I knew that it had to go on the doors... then when I was almost done, I was sure I was going run out, but didn't. :D

Last time I ran out of molding, I went back to buy more because the store had plenty just a few days prior...and of course, it was completely out of stock.

Before I got the car, I decided I'd do my best avoid taking snaps of the car in my driveway or some random commercial parking lot.

Had to do a bit of driving around to find good locations, but I had fun with it... I'm going to do it again when I have some time.

Thanks! :D

You can't tell by the pics, but I'm still working out the visor decal details. Originally, they were printed on something called PolySilk... that had an odd texture/gloss pattern and the adhesive didn't hold up long in the heat of the car.

Next, I tried some labels that stick to everything else really well. That was a little better, but still started to come off.

Right now (pictured), it's good old fashioned paper glued to sign vinyl... it's sticking so far and looks good (the matte paper 'matches' the visor a lot better than the PolySilk did...

When I get time I'm going to pick up some canvas for inkjet printers, adjust the colors to match, then mask well and use good old-fashioned industrial strength spray adhesive-- that stuff sticks to everything.

Thanks! For a while, I was strongly considering going with a Dark Silver... I kept wondering if I was going to hate myself in 3 years if I bought a purple car.

Then I saw the two colors parked right next to each other... and the decision was made instantly.

This is a closeup of one of the visors:
http://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/files/3/9/4/visorgraphiccloseup.jpg

Here you can see...

-My Nifty Catch All Premium Mat with the OEM All Weather Mat on top of it (because I like the look of the rubber mats).

-The envelope attached to the front of my driver's seat is a 'glove box' (velcro envelope) from a Trans Am. It's been painted to match the interior. Just a little more storage. :):

-A water bottle holder... the water bottle just rests on the floor.

...and my Garage Door Opener - I have to find a better place for that...

View from the back with my All Weather Cargo mat and 2 Cargo Nets:

And another shot of the iPod install:
http://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/files/3/9/4/ipodagain.jpg

iPod dock plus removable sun shade. The dock blends into the interior a bit better without the shade, but the shade helps with sun glare and makes the iPod 100% invisible when outside the car (I have tinted windows). The backlight turns off 10 seconds after I touch the iPod.

That's all the new pics that I have right now.

Dual cargo nets in back--interesting! I would assume that is better for larger items as the small would potentially roll under, yes?

Either way, it's innovative! :thumb:

For everyday use, I have switched the back configuration a bit. I used to just pile everything in the back and hope my laptops or other computer components didnt get crushed, but now I put the removable deck part in the upper position and put my computer garbage on that shelf and store my bigger stuff below. Eventually, I want to buy another deck so the spare tire area can be covered again.

Any idea how much that piece costs?

Dual cargo nets in back--interesting! I would assume that is better for larger items as the small would potentially roll under, yes?

Dual cargo nets... just because I need places for stuff. Big stuff doesn't slide around on the rubber HHR Cargo Mat, but I do like to keep my stuff from rolling around. The front cargo net usually holds a camera bag or two and a computer bag... sometimes the back net holds another computer bag. Sometimes the back net holds groceries. It all depends on the task at hand. I like to keep stuff handy. :D

I still have some minor mods planned to improve usablity. :)

Larger items sometimes do get placed between the two cargo nets, but usually those items would stay put whether I had cargo nets in there or not. I've never actually tried to get the two nets to hold stuff in place. :)

A big reason I wanted the HHR is for increased convenience-- I finally had it with stowing whatever gear in the back seat or my trunk. What a pain.
...AND now my dog can travel with me (a lot more often) when I go on my frequent road trips.

Then there are the looks... the bang for the buck... better gas mileage than my last car... etc

Offhand, I have no idea on the price of the shelf, but SoCal got to that before I did.

Anyway, thanks!

I love this car! :thumb:

I'm still refining a lot of mods.

The visors 'decals' are finally done (no pictures of the final yet)-- this time they are permanently attached with iron on inkjet fabric (cotton). Amazingly, the spray adhesive wasn't adhering well.

I removed the original airbag decals because they were showing up through most versions of my visor decals. They peel right off with a bit of acetone. The resulting residue was covered with the iron-on 'decal.' I'm finally completely happy with the way it looks and confident that it'll stay in place this time.

The iPod mount is going to be changed to something that fits in a little better-- the Transpod Direct that I used so far, even modified, is way too big and takes up way too much room. Next week I'll work on that.

I'm adding some (hidden) accessory jacks.

One jack attached to RAP power for the iPod so it auto pauses with the radio when I open the car door.

I need one jack attached to switched power (for the GPS... that I don't yet have - buying a Nuvi 350).

I need another jack attached to switched power for the cooler - don't want that baby running when the car's off, but it's nice for road trips. I think I might want to figure out how to put that one all by itself (I'm a little foreign to automotive wiring here, but my neighbor's an electrician and a car guy and he'll be helping out...)

Other little tweaks. It's a continual process.

iPod Update....

A MUCH cleaner iPod install using TenTechnology's Flexible dock. The dock is hot glued to the dash and the gooseneck is connected to RAP power behind the knee bolster so the iPod will automatically pause when exiting the vehicle.

http://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/files/3/9/4/ipodside-copy.jpg

This is the driver's view of the screen...
http://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/files/3/9/4/ipodinstallagain.jpg

Click wheel access is not blocked by the windshield wiper/washer lever.

All wires are pretty much hidden. You see a teeny bit of the aux wire where it's plugged into the front panel of the radio. The iPod is not visible from the outside of the car except from the windshield (the top part) and when the backlight's on. I have it set to turn off 2 seconds after I select whatever I need to select. I keep a little hood over the top to shade it from the sun and to make it invisible from the windshield (no pics of the hood yet).

If you have an iPod, don't mess with DLO's TransPod direct. It is way too bulky (about 10x larger than it needs to be).

HHR Nut

The visor decals are now 'final' - they were done with iron on cotton inkjet fabric. The visors were removed from the car, the airbag decal taken off with a bit of acetone, and the new decals were applied. They look pretty much like the old ones... a little larger and a more natural matte fabric appearance (the others were somewhat glossy)... but these stick a lot better. :)

Lock knobs from SoCalHHRs:

http://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/files/3/9/4/lockunlock.jpg
My arm thanks you. :thumb:

Edited to add: I didn't follow SoCal's install instructions exactly. The instructions indicated cutting at 5/16". Instead, I cut the lock rod at 1/2" because I wanted mine just a little less flush (see the pic).

Let's see... no pics, but I installed a few accessory jacks-- one for the iPod, to RAP power. One for a cooler, also to RAP power. This is mostly for road trips. The cooler can be turned off when I'm just running around town. I also wired always on power for my cell phone and accessory power for a GPS (not yet purchased). Sure, I could use the cigarette lighter and accessory jack for some of this stuff, but I hate having visible wires for stuff that's in my car all the time.

Black gutter guard lower 'grille' installed to (somewhat) protect the radiator. Installed with cable ties and cable tie mounting bases (neither visible if the hood is closed). This was for protection, not looks... no pics. You can't really see it anyway.

Creating a custom phone mount (all the commercial ones that I've tried press several of the side buttons on this phone) and stringing a headset wire from there to somewhere near the headrest so it's easy to access.

That's it for now... I think I'm almost roadtrip-ready -- hope so because I'm leaving town in a few weeks.

Yes agreed - very nice mods! That iPod dock makes me want to go out and buy an iPod! Very nice install.

You have done us all proud with your mods! :one:

*BTW - thanks for showing your "take" on installing our lock knob kit. It doesn't have to be installed flush, but can be made to look however the owner likes. Good job! :thumb:

Thank you thank you. I'd go nuts on a road trip without audio books- (any music gets old after 20+ hours on the road).

Thanks for the lock knobs. I guess GM QA forgot to roll down the windows when testing this car... I can't figure out how it ended up in production with those things. Ouch.

Thanks again! :D

Well, I took your tip and finally installed chrome trim on the door panels. I went a step further and put chrome rings around the speaker cutouts. Seems like it adds a nice accent - they should do this at the factory, it ties in well with the door handles and A/C vent trim;

Black gutter guard lower 'grille' installed to (somewhat) protect the radiator. Installed with cable ties and cable tie mounting bases (neither visible if the hood is closed). This was for protection, not looks... no pics. You can't really see it anyway.

Wow and I thought I was the only one here to put the chrome molding in the doors. Even the guys at the dealer thought it looks like GM put it there. Awsome pics btw.

I removed the air bag stickers with a bit of acetone. I'm not sure how well the iron on would adhere to the stickers, but if you don't remove them, they are partially visible through the decal.

They are printed on Avery Printable Fabric (http://www.avery.com/us/Main?action=product.Details&catalogcode=WEB01&node=10211418&productcode=3384)

I just felt the speaker trim accentuated the trim around the A/C vents and door handles (all round).

Hey; - each one does it their way right? :thumb:

As mentioned previously, I got rid of the little spotlight made to illuminate the window controls.

... and now I fixed my window controls so they are backlit.

In the first pic, some of the buttons are blocked by the gear shift...

So.... here's a closeup:

The brightness and color matches the dash exactly. This looks REALLY nice in person... hard to capture in a photograph.

The only place I've seen it is Pep Boys... and only 1 out of the 2 (that are within reasonable driving distance) seems to carry it.

I haven't found a source online either.

Hope that helps.

Like yeshua said, I found the best price for the floor mats at GMPartsDirect.com, however, they've gone up $8+ per set (front + rear) since I ordered mine.

The rear cargo mat I got for free because the silly dealer 'accidentally' drilled holes in my front bumper (after I had it in writing that they would refrain from doing so )... but GM Parts Direct also carries the cargo mat.

And yeah, they are available in cashmere.

Freshly Zaino'd and ready for 1350 hard miles later this week.

I'm going to give Duplicolor's new product, 'Shield', a try for the trip. It's a temporary 'bra' that washes off easily (not in the rain-- with a pressure washer or soap and water). If it doesn't protect from stone chips, well-- at least the buggies should be easier to rinse off.

Pictures of how that looks on Thursday, unless I run out of time.

Thanks-- I should have time to post the pics. If not, I'll take them and post later in the weekend (Sunday... Monday... ).

On another note-- wow, this car holds a lot of stuff... my previous car would already be full and I'd be shipping boxes North. Should make for a much more comfortable ride (no sharing elbow space with stuff that almost didn't fit in the car...).

3+/- month working "vacations" require heavy packing... one of the reasons I bought this car. So far, so good.

Roadtrip test of Duplicolor Shield... a temporary bra

I bought 1 can of black and 1 can of clear, because I wasn't sure quite how clear the clear would be.

I'm on schedule to actually leave when I'm supposed to, so here are the pics:

http://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/files/3/9/4/hhrmask.jpg

I masked off the lights, the grill, the top of the windshield.. and behind the sunroof.

After I took the pictures, I changed the hood so the mask more or less followed the yellow line.

The bumper was sprayed black, then I removed the mask from the grill and sprayed that, the mirrors, and in front of the sunroof (lots of bugs land there) with the clear.

The clear has temporarily changed the chrome to look surprisingly like the Satin finish.

The clear on the roof in front of the sunroof looks very much like primer-- moreso than the black on the bumper.

Cleanup is easy-- it rubs right off. makes it hard to believe it's really going to do any good. Time will tell.

Looks pretty decent-- here's the pic:
http://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/files/3/9/4/hhrbra.jpg

The color and shine of the car show through a bit, even with the black.

Anyway, will update with results as soon as I can. I leave tomorrow morning.

Nah- this took me 30 minutes, tops, and it would have taken less if I hadn't done the grill separately.

When I get to my destination, I know I'll have the energy to quickly rinse the stuff off with a pressure washer. I'm pretty sure I won't have enough energy or patience to immediately scrub at bugs all over the bumper and hood... maybe some, but-- I know how I get after spending 20-30 hours in a car. Talk about your bad attitudes-- you don't want to run into me then. :D

Some trips the bugs are really bad-- some trips, hardly any at all. Just luck.

Holy scary thing to do batman! Hope it works for you.

Not so scary-- I wouldn't have bought it off the shelf and blindly applied it.

I read enough reviews and info [from others who've used it] online to know that at the very least, when you want it off, it washes off very easily. That was my main concern.

Don't do it.

It did not wash off "easily" with a pressure washer. It was more like going over the same spot at least 5 times at very close range - that got most of it off, or it seemed to.

After I got some sleep and looked at the car again, it looked terrible. The residue was absolutely horrible and a layer of the stuff seemed to have traveled backwards over the entire hood, part of the roof of the car, the doors near the mirrors, etc-- probably when I hit a brief but nasty rainstorm. Sorry, didn't take pictures of that--- wasn't thinking.

Anyway, the rest of it had to be scrubbed off (and scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed). Think of it as roughly equivalent to scrubbing off bugs everywhere the stuff or residue remained.

Blah.

Anyway, after cleaning it up, the finish is again perfect. No damage, but what a waste of time. Took a whole lot longer to get the stuff off than it took to spray it on in the first place.

Here's how the Shield "Protected" areas looked after 1320ish miles:
