View Full Version : Looking at Tires
BlackHHR06 04-08-2008, 09:51 PM I'm looking to replace my orginal factory tires after 40,000 miles
I'm looking at Cooper's CS4 Touring, H rated 60,000 miles.
215 - 55 - 16s
Anyone running Coopers now or in the past two years ??????????
Thanks for your imput.
Yonash 04-09-2008, 12:13 AM i ran Cooper Zeon 2XS on my Camaro and loved them. Cooper makes great tires IMO. the 2XS is their high performance tires, and were just as sticky as the BFG G-Force Sports on the Camaro now, they just didnt last as long as my BFGs are doing so far. but for the price difference, Cooper tires are great on performance in their specific intended uses, and are cheaper than other big brand tires of comparable performance. this is all in my and my brothers experiences. and he worked at Big Brand Tires here in town for a couple years, and got well aquainted with many brands and models of tires.
Doc brown 04-09-2008, 07:50 AM Cooper is a tire I've never owned, though I've always heard good things about them. I've recently become a big fan of Yokohama tires. I put a set on my Catera last year. They are by far the best set of tires I have ever owned. Excellent wet/snow traction, good wear, excellent ride, and great handling.
Surfer Panel 04-11-2008, 06:45 PM I needed some tires quick for a fast - build so got Nexems. Then read reviews.
Seem pretty good for the price.
Jay Budget 04-11-2008, 06:58 PM Coopers = Good Tire + Good Price
Then again there are alot of good priced tires out there. Tirerack is my tire place, they have never done me wrong!!!:thumb:

Linepainter 04-16-2008, 05:41 PM I just put BF Goodrich Traction T/A 215/55/R16 h rated

c2vette 09-28-2008, 09:00 PM I have a question related to Tire Rack and Big Brand Tire. I have always purchased tires at the local dealer, usually Goodyear or Michelin. I noticed that Tire Rack will deliver straight to a local Big Brand Tire outlet, and the out the door price ends up considerably less than my usual tire shop. If it was just $50 or so, I would stick with my usual guy, but the savings is way more than that. Anything wrong with going the Tire Rack/Big Brand route?

This is exactly what I do, no issue's whatsoever. Extra cash in my pocket is always a good thing.
cperez1217 09-29-2008, 12:25 PM bf goodrich g-sports there z rated and about139 excellent grip wet or dry. and they handle like your on rails.
photojoed80 09-29-2008, 06:18 PM General Altimax HP. Excellent tire that has trnsformed my HHR. Great dry/wet traction, extremely quiet and taut handling. Go to Tire Rack and read the reviews.:thumb:

I just put this same set on mine. Got them for $80.00 each, plus 45 dollars total shipping. I have used them in the past and love em.
Rikki Sixx 10-02-2008, 11:59 AM Do any companies still make tires with raised white letters? I'd love to put a set on my Panel.
trfindley 10-02-2008, 12:11 PM I put Cooper tires on the HHR. They work perfectly. I did it because of the good service the local dealer provides. Cooper makes good tires and does not spend a lot of money on advertising like Goodyear, Firestone, etc.

I just went this route on two of my vehicles. Got the tires I wanted, not just what the sop handled, and it was cheaper when all was done.

I was unable to find any when I was looking. It really depends on what size tire you are wanting to run. All of the ones I found were either 15" or smaller for cars, or truck tires which were too big.
Bill Cude 10-02-2008, 10:44 PM I put a set of Riken Raptors ( a BF Goodrich private label ) on mine about 2 months ago, went with a 225/50/16 instead, absolutley no complaints:thumb:

This is what I put on our HHR. No complaints, I stuck with the stock size.
hyperv6 10-02-2008, 11:28 PM Just bought a set of Goodyear Assurance Triple Treads.
I have used them on the wifes car for the last 3 years and they have been greeat in Wear, Snow, rain and dry. They were a step up from the Comp TA's that came on my GTP that lasted only 24,000 miles. The Comps wore even but had no life even with the wife driving most of the miles.
Here in the Snow Belt and on a street the city seldom plows they have done a great job.
I went with a set of 215-60-15 as the Revolutions Per Mile were 802 vs the 18 inch pilots that are at 800 RPM so they should fit right on with no problems and if anything a improved ride.
I am still getting the Smoothie wheels painted black with a red lip and street rod rings and I will post pictures once they are mounted.
I guess I will be a little retro in the winter.
Biggiedog70 10-03-2008, 10:21 AM I'd recommned the Copper CS4. There a high mileage tire, and ride so smooth, there comparable to a michilean , which is probably the best tire out there:one:

I've got the Triple Treds on my 06 w/17's. No complaints, they work good rain or shine.

We are pushing 45,000 miles on the GTO with them right now and should see well over 50,000 or even 60,000 miles with them.
The water traction has been great and I was shock how well they do in the snow. No need for Blizzak's.
I got a good deal on them from the tire rack with the Goodyear rebate they have right now. I also get $20 off each tire due to my Dad being retired from Goodyear [no pun intended].
The Comps I had on my GP before were just not good for wear and the Goodyear Eagle GT HR's on my last truck were horrible in water.
The newer Goodyear tires are not like the old ones. They are revamping their line up of tires one line at a time and the new tires are some of the best anymore. I could not say that in the past.
Be warned some old lines like the RSA and others have not been replaced yet and are not up to snuff. They soon will be replaced.

Thats good to hear, i've got 12k on them right now and they have basically no wear. I haven't tried them out in the snow but torrential downpours, ice and hail doesn't phase them one bit. We live on the coast and get a _lot_ of water so thats pretty important.

These tires in water are just like fish and swim right through! These are not cheap tires but you get good value as they wear longer than most.
HHRse 10-04-2008, 01:33 PM have cooper's on the wifes minivan and they are doing well. these are my first set, i've had good results in the past with BFG's but Goodyears wore out quick.
hyperv6 10-04-2008, 05:49 PM Tires are like car companies. Each line of tires is like a line of cars. Some are fast some are cheap, some are old and out dated, etc.
It is like saying owning a Aveo and saying Chevys are slow. Or a ZR1 Vette and that Chevys are expensive.
They all have their good and bad lines.
If you install Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S tires you will be fine in the snow, wet and dry pavement. I trust my life on these tires! Here is the link at TireRack that talks about the tire:

I love my HHR!
Senior 10-05-2008, 08:22 AM I've got the 17" wheels right now and when it comes time to replace I'll probably get some 15" wheels and match the tires up. I like more rubber than those skinny little things.
hyperv6 10-05-2008, 08:20 PM You had better see if it will clear the front calipers as I stest fitted some 16 rallys on mine and there is little room on a 16" wheel.
15" may not fit.
wysguy 10-06-2008, 11:55 PM I had a generic set of Cooper Lifeliners on my wife's car, and had an issue after a year or so where the sidewall cracked (tires were 1 1/2 yr old). Neither the manufacturer nor the retail store where I had 'em put on offered any kind of reimbursement, and had to eat another set of tires (got Michelins this time) full price. I learned later that specific set of tires were recalled after 6 months.
Senior 10-10-2008, 06:23 AM Thanks I'll remember that.
jst333 11-01-2008, 06:54 PM I just replaced the oem 16's with these...(cooper cs4) So far I love them, they handle great and are very quiet. I've always had good luck with coopers in the past, I could never afford michelin's. The cs4's seem like would be just as nice as a michilin. The cs4's are New tires and don't have many reviews, But MotorTrend really liked them. I originally was leaning toward's another set of 16 oem firestones because they seemed quiet, and wore nicely. But they kind of scared me in the rain, and had not driven them in the snow yet (Bought hhr used). Anyway the Cooper cs4's handle great and really change the personality of my HHR. I've never had a tire handle this good in the rain. Very happy so far, I'll post some snow reviews soon. Also these tires got rid of my 75mph SHAKE that could'nt be fixed or found. I paid $423.00 out the door after a $50 rebate, from a great local tire shop. :thumb:

I am running the Cooper CS4, they are probably the smoothest tire that i am ever drivin on, i absolutly love them.:one:
tireman1554 11-02-2008, 09:35 AM After being in the tire business for 18 years I've had the chance to test just about every brand, (major and private). I've always been impressed with Cooper ;even when Pirelli had their stinkin hands in the mix. Problem is being told by the corporate big wigs to lie to customer about Cooper and their quality in order to sell the more exspensive Goodyear or Michelin. Well since I dont work for that dishonest company anymore I will tell you Cooper is a very good quality tire at a fraction of the cost, cheap enough that you dont even need to buy an extra warranty because defect issues are nearly zero and if you have a non-repairable road hazard they are cheap enough to just buy a new one.

I just changed out my 08's tires with these Michelins. The difference in drive and handling is remarkable. And traction in the rain is incredible. They were a little pricey but I've never been cheap when buying tires.
sp52075 11-14-2008, 08:04 PM Hey I finally got rid of the maypop tires i have been driving on and went to LesSchwab and ended up getting OHTSU ZEXIUS xi427 can sombody please help are they worth a crap. All I can find out online is that they are or were the same as some other brand I cant remember what they were called. but they ran me about $650-660 instaled
jst333 11-14-2008, 08:43 PM I have to say... these coopers are like velcro in the rain! Seriously, wet roads are were these tires really show their worth. If you live in a wet area, you have to check the cs4's out. I can hardly get these to spin. Very happy so far, Still waiting for snow, but I have a good feeling these tires will perform as expected!
