HHR DLYT 04-18-2006, 08:33 PM Very nice Mike. The door lock knobs look GREAT! You are :one:
BTW 'Stretch Stubby Antenna'??? Somewhat of an oxymoron (or inappropriate joke) :poke:
SoCalHHR 04-18-2006, 08:36 PM You guys are too much! :roflol: I was hoping to keep ths thread "straight" for at least a while!
Bags are coming. There's a lot of work involved and the kit will not be cheap.
But we are having it made specifically for us & the HHR - so everything will be included (except the know-how to do this kind of mod ;) ).

Piece of cake! You unly need to mark & cut the top part of the lock rod (we provide instructions), you will need a strong sharp pair of side cutting pliers or a dremel with a cut-off wheel. A hacksaw is not a good idea!
Once you remove the stock knob & cut the rod, the rest is cake! :thumb:
The whole job (both sides), can be done in 20-30 minutes.
O6ChevyHHR 04-18-2006, 08:49 PM will the kit cost more than 1000 bucks?

Uhhhh - yeah. :roflol: It's pretty expensive to bag a car with full digital control.
No more for now...it will be ready soon, we'll post the details then.
snova031 04-18-2006, 10:11 PM Those doorlocks are awesome...I need to order em.
I remember reading about everyone hating them, and I was thinking 'gee, I never had a problem with them'. Then, the weather warmed up a bit and I rolled down my window...damn doorlocks!!

dbarberaz 04-18-2006, 11:29 PM The reson I would look at getting a new one is because there are a few places that the radio gets static. I did not have this problm before with the ugly stock.
So maybe one that I can adjust would help in those problem spots.

We have had some customers ask for a little larger antenna. Apparently the stubby was too short for their preference. The new "Stretch Stubby" is not only adjustable, but features a 1/8" steel rod that is very stiff and will not bend back like the stocker - so no danger of it whipping around to hit the sunroof! Plus it provides a completely different look from the original stubby.
I've had 6 different antennas on my HHR now, and sometimes I like to swap them around. The Stretch Stubby is cool because you have the option of going short, medium, or long - depending on your mood! :D
I know I just opened up a can of worms with that!

Will the "stretch stubby" work on this little fella? Waiting for some mods to come out for this little ride, and pretty decent gas mileage as well :D

ohhhhhh.... really....
SoCalHHR 04-19-2006, 02:35 PM Just kidding! :D Gotcha!
The silicone is insereted into the knobs so they can grip the serrated lock rod on the HHR. Unlike most older cars, the HHR does not use a standard threaded rod. The knobs are very hard to get on/off without damage (the factory uses a special air tool with a rubber socket), so we opted to design a knob with a larger hole that will easily slide onto the rod. Once the silicone sets, it's on securely.
Hope it helps!

One Smoothie Door Lock set covers the two front doors.
thanks for bringing it to my attention, I will provide that info on our site.
The rear doors do not pose much of a problem for arms out the window as their lock knobs are located towards the front of the door. Also, many owners who have smaller children (*who cannot reach the knobs when properly restrained in a car seat), might like to keep the stock knobs as it is easier to reach back and lock/unlock them if need be.

Ummmm.... My lock knobs are located toward the back of these doors. But I will agree that they do not pose any hazard due to them being located by the portion of the glass that does not roll down.

Wouldn't it be easier to just hit the unlock switch on the door panel from either of the front seats? Or how about throwing it in park? Also wouldn't it be a good idea to have them flush in the rear to keep children from unlocking the door?
captain howdy 04-20-2006, 06:41 AM Also wouldn't it be a good idea to have them flush in the rear to keep children from unlocking the door?
Actually if your worried about your kids safety you would turn the inside handles off so they can't open the door from the inside. :p: There is a little plastic screw on the back door to disable the inside handles. ;) Now my children need me to let them out regadless if the door is locked or not. My back door lock knobs are also located more towards the rear of the vehicle.

Sorry! I was going from memory on that and apparently - mine's not very good! However, as the capitan said, it is easy enough to use the stock lockouts.
Lock knobs are usually sold in pairs, so if you would like to do the rears, simply buy two pairs.

New locks installed. It took about 5 minutes from start to finish. I cut at 1/2" instead of 5/16" because I wanted mine to sit a little bit higher than your picture shows. They are perfect. Thanks for doing the work for me. :D
Less bruises now. :thumb:
You'd have me on the new antenna if I didn't already have your other stubby. With as little as I listen to the radio, reception isn't an issue. I'm an iPod addict (my music so it's always good... and audio books for road trips).
Anyway, thanks again. Recommended purchase for everyone. :thumb:

Did u cut the rod or the knob?
hvrod 04-27-2006, 08:07 AM Did u cut the rod or the knob?
CJ... looks clean...
One question... Worst case:: if in an accident...the electrical power gets cut off.. , gas line ruptures, a small spark , a small fire ensues how do you open the doors manually ?
Or you accidently skid into a lake/pond , water starts to engulf the vehicle, electrical power gets cut off....
SoCalHHR 04-27-2006, 11:03 AM The great thing about our lock kit is that you the owner, can decide how high you want the lock knobs. I will take pictures on the next install I do for someone. You can have our knobs up about 1/2" and they still are barely noticeable with your arm out the window - the smooth rounded profile is the key...still, FAR better than the stock "tower of doom" knobs. :D
cowboybornlate 04-27-2006, 11:05 AM Better have a hammer handy!!! I'm looking at getting the new bullet proof tint put on mine. Now I wouldn't want to be the test dummy with someone firing a bullet at my window, but the stuff is nice in the fact that even when hit with say a tire iron, the shattered glass stays in place. I lost my last laptop to a smash and grab in my Silverado. I saw a documentary on the Discovery channel about this stuff. It held up to a large man with a baseball bat and a tire iron. A lot of the Private Investigators around here are getting it due to all the equipment we keep in our vehicles. I don't regularly go over any large bodies of water, but my thought is, you better have a window rolled down!! lol Of course, the front window and a large hammer could give you a way out too....

Is that the same film that was on that show, with the burglar tries to break in a house.. then afterwards they upgrade the house..
I saw them install the similar window film.. and they used a hammer and couldn't break the glass enough to gain access..
cowboybornlate 04-27-2006, 11:24 AM I'm not sure if it's the same one or not, but it sounds like the same thing. It's really amazing stuff. The window can be shattered, but it stays in place in the window channel and can't be yanked out to gain access. One of the investigators here had it on a Ford Crown Vic and someone went all the way around his vehicle trying to gain access, shattered two side windows and the back window, but never gained access. It is pretty expensive, normally in the neighborhood of $400-$500 for all the way around coverage. Luckily, the shop I use, the manager's hubby is a investigator and she gives me a good deal. She offered to do mine at half off....

Just any standard "Clear" silicone seal will work well.
We recommend silicone seal because it has more "body" and allows you to push the knobs down exactly where you want them, holding them in place while it dries (overnight).
It's all in the instructions...
ivtech 08-13-2006, 12:41 AM I used silicone seal I got at OSH in the auto dept.

Although there are no real 'products' for sale anymore at SoCalHHRs.com other than a few decals, the site is still there. I now own the domain name and operate the site.

It gets perfect reception (am/fm) and I believe xm is the rear antenna anyways. It might be a little more then some, but it is alluminum and real carbon fiber. I read alot of good reviews about them serviving winters.

I believe they were only selling off remaining stock they had. Guess they are about done. (sad to say).
As to the door locks, I un-threaded mine (very coarse thread) & trimmed the
studs & re-installed my oem knobs. Now in lock-down I have em sit Flush with door panel.
