View Full Version : 08' Mpg Verification
COOKZ32 07-08-2008, 10:11 AM OK I have had my HHR a few weeks now and I have verified the MPG counter against my mathematic ablities...........all 3 times, the display is dead on to the math. example: HHR=28.6, MATH=28.6471... let me add I only have 867 miles so far.
What a fantastic car to drive! Is this thing a car or a truck? What the heck do you guys or gals call it? :(
I have also noticied that running the A/C is detrimental to the MPG, but not running the A/C chaps my arse........;)

CDS31MC 07-08-2008, 01:35 PM And I get 27-28 average on my tanks all the time, wonder what I would get without it? Probably will not find out for a while, I move to Hawaii in September.
Supermode 07-08-2008, 04:48 PM I have an '08 too with 600 miles. Don't forget the MPG will get better once our engines are broken in.

Yes I know, and I have tried to read as many threads as I can here, and I have learned that some say after as much as 15000 miles they continue to see improvements.
Lone Ranger 07-08-2008, 08:45 PM Cookz32, how are you breaking it in? The payoff of the right break-in technique is good MPG early in the game, like you are getting. It means your piston rings have seated well. Now, as miles accumulate and the engine loosens up a little more, MPG should further improve. Your oil consumption should also be extremely minimal between oil changes.
COOKZ32 07-08-2008, 10:52 PM I didn't drive it hard, and I didn't drive it easy. I stayed out of the cruise control for the most part and when I did use it I tapped it around, say up and down in 10mph range. Also I have had passengers and carried a little cargo around, I believe I followed what I learned here, but the advice was a broad range, so I tried to stay in the middle. Time will tell, but so far she seems like a great runner. The car is everything I expected, except for the lame shallow cup holders, that are completely worthless, as every corner or turn the item in the holder goes for a ride. I have been studying the design of the entire center console, and I think I will make one out of wood or fiberglass and mold one, not sure yet, and I would do it this winter. I'm thinking of making one much taller, and possibly enclosing the entire parking brake handle inside a box to hold more stuff.
StormChaser 07-21-2008, 09:04 AM Same baot here. About 800 miles on her and have averaged 28.9 overall. On a multi-hour highway trip that I wasnt in a rush on, I cruised along in the right lane at 60mph and got an astonishing 36.2mpg!

Don't be astonished. I have driven 515 miles with out the low fuel gauge blinking at me. 60mph on cruise. Right now I am seriously hypermiling an getting 33.9mpg mixed 50 city 50 highway.....35mph average speed over the last 140 miles.
Realize that means 30 in the city and 38 on the highway.
steelwoolghandi 07-21-2008, 01:54 PM I got my 08 HHR in March and had 68 miles on it, its now middle of July and I have 24,000 on it. I started out at getting around 26 to 27 MPH with Air and Highway driving. Now I don't get much better I have seen about 28 to 29 with Air and Highway. I do drive around 70 or a little over on the highway so that not bad with the Air going and at that speed. I am happy with it.

That's good if it's your overall mileage. Tough to do better at 70 or 70+.
COOKZ32 07-22-2008, 12:20 PM That is great mileage fella's. My avg is still 28-31.0mpg overall. 1300 miles now and luvin it. Have not had any issues that require service by me or a return trip to the dealer. I have noticed that if I run the AIR the mpg will drop, here in Minnesota that is not a big deal, don't really need AIR often.
twistrman 07-22-2008, 12:23 PM i have found that the sweet spot for mileage on mine is 35-45mph, and at that i've been reading 30-40mpg on the instamatic on a flat area. Sadly i never drive that speed often. Big trip coming up this weekend, 300 miles each way, so we'll see how it does.
RkyMtnHHR 07-22-2008, 01:41 PM I drive a 2LT with 2.4 and 5 speed manual. My commute is about 35 mile round trip, with about 20 miles on the highway. Over the last four tanks I have gotten 27 – 28 MPG. I use the cruise control, coast and keep my foot out of the pedal as much as possible. I shift at 3000 rpms and do not start hard from the light.
BigMOCats 07-22-2008, 11:15 PM I have over 14xxx on my '08(picked up 8/07) and drove from StL to AtL and back last weekend. Averaged 29 mpg @ about 75 mph.
Clevelandhhrss 07-23-2008, 10:46 AM I think I will try to get 600+ miles out of my next fill up. I'll use 87 octane, I'll record my every detail.
Goose 08-02-2008, 11:30 PM I have an 07 but at 36K I just got 35.10 mpg from this last tank, my best mpg since having the HHR (May 07)
Not too shabby..didn't do anything real special...just stayed 60-70 sometimes 75 or 80...I was really amazed...DIC was reporting 34.4

COOKZ32 08-20-2008, 07:52 AM OK folks I'm averaging 31mpg, :thumb: going on three tanks now, but man is it tough to do. No A/C as that really cuts into the average, and I need to throw in some highway and keep the speed below 60, but all said, I'm very impressed. These cars/trucks whatever the heck it is, is a secret I'm glad I found!

08blackHHRSS 08-22-2008, 11:04 PM 10K on my SS currently, and the DIC average has been hovering around 28 mpg. I drive 2 hrs (115 miles) a day to/from work and it's 55 out of my driveway, a few stop signs, then 70-75 for the rest of the drive . I get around 32-33 @ 75 mph (cruise on) and one 30 mile stretch of road i use as a secondary route sometimes gets me 38-39 mpg both directions(so it's pretty much a level road)when the cruise is set @ 58 mph.
 I do of course drive it like it likes to be driven:steering: , but usually when i get up to sorta the speed limit, i go w/ the cruise just cuz .
(I've noticed unless i'm running @ 80 'ish, having the A/C on or off really does not affect my instant mileage )

Super!!! I should have got the SS....
ZTony8 08-26-2008, 10:11 AM My '08 2.4 five speed is getting 27-29 m.p.g. with the mixed type of driving I've done.Last tank was 27.98,the one before that was 29.33.I've noticed that the engine has already loosened up some(about 500 miles ago)and that running the a/c noticeably cuts into the gas mileage(along with making the car harder to launch from a stop.It either bogs or chirps the tires.I haven't found the ideal launch r.p.m. with the a/c running).
TheWoat 09-08-2008, 05:39 PM Drove around 3,600 in 9 days driving from CA to MT. most of the driving was going 80+ mph, or in the low 20s going through Yellowstone and Glacier Natl Parks. Averaged 31.4 mpg on the trip computer, and calculated around the same. Surprised considering the mountain passes we went through and going up slight uphills and downhills in NV and Idaho.
White Flash II 09-08-2008, 09:18 PM My 08 Panel got 28.9 mpg on the way up to NC from FL.I was only doing the speed limit. And that was with 600 or so miles on the truck.Came back got 24.6 mpg .That was doing 80 to 90 mph.So i think the more you push the petal the less mpg you will get.My 98 vette gets 27.3 mpg at 80 to 90 mpg.Design has alot to do with it.
COOKZ32 10-04-2008, 07:30 AM OK, I have not reset the MPG counter in 2700 miles and it shows 30.8. 4800miles on the car now, MPG seems to be getting better. I'm going to reset it all at 5000 miles and start over. Changed the oil to SYN at 3000 miles too. Winter is coming, so they change the gas here, and longer warm ups in her future. I'm going to enjoy the Auto Start feature and heated seats...hahaha...
