View Full Version : Wastegate mod
mazoo85 07-16-2008, 02:11 AM So I tried to wastegate mod that some of the sky and solstice guys were doing to get some extra HP for free here's the link
http://www.solsticeforum.com/forum/f63/talked-friend-mine-wastegate-mod-40031/. Instead of some extra fun it was 5 hours of wasted time and nothing gained except busted knuckles and a beaten ego. According to those guys it should have been easy? I took off the heat shield, which is a pain. I was thinking about taking of the windshield wiper shroud, but decided that is way to much work. For the life of me I couldn't get a good angle to loosen any of the bolts, well at least the ones I needed. The engine compartment is SOOOOOOO small and packed with stuff, I couldn't get a wrench or nothing to do sh*t. Times like this make me miss the engine by in my K5, could sit in it if I wanted. They show a pretty good picture not too sure how many of you guys have crawled under the car to figure stuff out but their is no way, at least I couldn't get a camera to fit and get a decent picture unless it was the size of a childs pinky. Has anyone else tried or accomplished this mod? Or know of any other cheap easy things us SS owners could do? I know there is another one for the sky/soltisce, it was the no lag mod but not to many people liked it.
Thanks
Jeff® 07-16-2008, 06:17 AM What fun is a toy car if you can't have busted knuckles?
a76marine 07-16-2008, 07:16 AM They do say it's tight in there in the last post on the 1st page but it says using needle nose and #10 deep metric socket should get it done.
kodos78 07-16-2008, 10:36 AM I haven't seen the inside of a Solstice/Sky engine bay yet, but I'd imagine that there is more room given the really small engine compartment we have. Also, we have a FWD transaxle under there.
rearview 07-16-2008, 01:32 PM It is super easy to do.... but you need to do it from below. No need to take off the shrouds, etc. You can use a 10mm open end wrench. Break one of the nuts loose, adjust to the end of threads, lock with the other. Takes longer to put the car on jack stands than doing the adjustment.
mazoo85 07-16-2008, 09:37 PM I got at it from the bottom and was able to get the nut closet to the wastegate loose but the other one was a pain. I might just be from me having arms that aren't small car freindly. Time for stubby wrenches.
rearview 07-16-2008, 10:03 PM if you've got a 10mm crowfoot you could use that by hand to turn the other nut.
mazoo85 07-16-2008, 11:17 PM Right on I really wanna do this but man I was so pissed after a few hours I"ll need till Sunday to wanna do it again. On this note though I would like to offer another suggestion I was reading on dejon's website (http://solstice.dejonpowerhouse.com/) and they suggested either doing this mod or adding a manual boost controller and setting it to 18 or 20 psi? True this is for the sky/solstice, but same engine. Any thoughts?
sanddragger28 07-22-2008, 10:53 PM So did you ever finish the mod?????????????????
turbotech 07-23-2008, 08:41 AM Mazoo, do you have an auto trans? I did mine (auto) from the top. The shield doesnt need to come off. But you do need to be able to work without seeing what you're doing. A 10mm deep socket and a 1/4" drive short ratchet is all you need. Lean over and feel for the end of the rod. Put the socket and ratchet on that rod and loosen it, no alot just enough to break it free. Then take toe other nut below the wastegate and turn it all the way back to the end of the threads. Then tighten the nut on the outside. You're done. Manual trans guys may have an easier time gettin to it from the bottom since there isn't a big chunk on aluminum in the way.
mazoo85 07-27-2008, 09:24 PM No i got the 5 speed. Ya i haven't been able to do anything besides clean the car because I 've been working so darn much. Plus, I just got it back from he dealer because the intake boost sensor crapped out so the had to replace it.
mightymouse 07-28-2008, 09:38 AM if you have the tune, will this mod still work and give a little bit more???
sanddragger28 07-28-2008, 01:23 PM if you have the tune, will this mod still work and give a little bit more???
That little Turbo can only move so much air and your injectors can only spit so much fuel out. I would say doing bothe mods will cause the impeller blades on the Turbo to crack and brake off. Or you will lean the motor out to much and youll get to see what your rod looks like outside of your block. Or it will cause the computer to shut down and go to some sort of safe mode.:D
rommer 07-28-2008, 01:58 PM In other words he doesn't know! ;)
hogwild 07-28-2008, 02:45 PM I believe that HRC suggested not to do both.
sanddragger28 07-28-2008, 03:42 PM In other words he doesn't know! ;)
Oh I know what will happen it will be one of the three things I listed if not all.:thumb:
mightymouse 07-28-2008, 04:44 PM no need,i won't do it lol!!! not worth the extra 5hp(i'm sure you don't get alot).
mazoo85 07-31-2008, 10:45 PM ya after the thinking about it, and just getting the car back from the dealer after one of the senors went out. I think I'm just gonna leave it alone for a while.
turbotech 08-03-2008, 10:04 AM Update on the mod. Wastegate rod has been turned up for over a week now and feeling effects of the ecm not likeing it. First couple days was great, just before shifts the guage would hit 19lbs. Not bad for an auto. But now the guage is surging back and forth (hunting) in the 10-15 range. I was told that this would happen, so not to worried bout it. Can readjust rod adn wait for Hahn or GM Stages.
