I had to give up my baby. A 2002 V6 fully loaded premium Mustang. When you purchase a premium Mustang pretty much every option available comes standard. There were only three available options with i had all three (leather seats, automatic trans., and Mach 1000 stereo). It was mineral grey with dual gold racing stripes going from thin to thick like on an old Shelby Mustang. I also had gold C stripes on the sides of the car. The window were tinted dark as hell with Mustang across the back and little side windows. Smoked head lights, honey comb tail lights, and a third brake light tht lit up Mustang with a running horse on each side. I had a complete Mach 1 suspension (shocks, struts, and springs) so it was lower than most V6s and GTs. It also had a Densecharger CAI with K&N filter, MAC headers, and Magnaflow dual cat back exhaust. The computer chip was from Diablo Motorsports. I had the rear bumper and fog lights from a GT. I had a 2 tone beige interior with a burlwood interior kit. I loved my car so much I had my first daugters name and birthday tattooed in a flaming Mustang logo. I had to give it up for a family car because my second daughter is due any day now :D  and I have a nine year old step daughter. I guess I'll have to have my new daugters name and birthday tattooed in a Chevy logo. :p: As much as I miss my Mustang :( I gave it up with an understanding with my wife that when I get our garage finished off and tax time rolls around I'm getting a 69 fastback to restore. All black, pro touring style. :D

My previous car was a 2000 Ford Ranger truck (3.0 V6, auto w/OD). With the arrival of our first child last year, the Ranger just didn't make sense anymore - we had to drive my wife's car everywhere as a family. I was looking for something with hauling room, baby room, and great mileage. I test drove the Honda Element, Ridgeline truck, and several small SUV's & 5-door hatchbacks - nothing else came close to the HHR.

I'm loving the style, performance, comfort, and lockable hauling space - something I did not have with the truck. Getting 32MPG hwy and 24-26 around town (it's a big town).

2000 Ford Focus SE. 78,000 miles. I had 3 accidents with it. All which was not my fault. People were more Focus on my car then road..LOL. I never got around getting it fix and the warranty ran out after 65,000 so I said heck with it. Once I saw the HHR. I knew it was for me. Captain Howdy there are going to be plenty of things that can be done soon too the HHR. Just think of it as a new age Hot Rod. A better engine can be put in. There is so much potential this car offers

I gave up (traded in) my '99 Tahoe, which I had heavily customized and converted to my version of an "SS". Although I loved my Tahoe, it was over 100K miles, the extended warranty was almost up, and at 11 MPG going downhill with a tailwind, something had to give. I drive 60-80 miles per day for my business. The Tahoe was a 4x4, but I only took it off road twice in two years. I miss it, but I really love the HHR. It too is now an "SS". It does everything well. Everyone who sees it wants to know what it is. Women especially love the styling - all think it's "cute". My guy friends like the retro look. I feel like a celebrity driving it. The last time a vehicle of mine garnered that type of attention was when I owned my '73 Corvette. I've owned a lot of muscle cars. My first car (at 17) was a '70 Chevelle SS396. I've had several SS's over the years. Loved them all. I'm excited about all the aftermarket pieces that will most certainly be created for the HHR. I'm looking forward most of all to seeing a bolt-on supercharger conversion kit.

1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T convertible, fully loaded, it was a great car, What i miss more is hearing my turbo spool up and BOV venting with the top down. Those were the days but I am very happy with my HHR I have all the cargo space I need and its a four door but the best part of owning my HHR are all the compliments I get, those are priceless :D

Great Thread CH...

I actually had 99 Chrysler Sebring Limited. It was fully loaded..got about 25MPG too. But, since my 3rd child, had to consider a vehicle that will fit the 5 of us. When I saw the HHR's early last year, I new I had to have it. When I ask for a trade-in value, they only offered my $3K..so I sold it myself for Blue Book ($7K). That same week I sold the Sebring, I went and got my new wheels...I will miss the convertible in this California weather, but my sunroof will do.

Well, now I am a complete Chevy family, with my "Drive it once a month" Blazer, and the other family bus, the Astro.

I had a 97 Grand Caravan, complete with factory gold rims  . I can't say I traded it in though...I was at the NCO Academy in Biloxi when Katrina hit. All the windows were blown out and the parking lot it was in was under 4 feet of water. Needless to say it was totaled  . I needed a vehicle pronto, but being the first new car I ever got for myself, I sucked it up and ordered what I wanted. The wait was worth it.

I drove a 94 voyager 3.0.It was my transition car after not driving for almost 4 years. The car before that though was a loaded 95 Monte Carlo Z34.It was red with grey leather, dual exhaust and some rims.lol.I can't remember what size.Anyway I bought it used in 2001 with 68,000 miles and drove it for about 5 weeks until I got drunk and smashed it into a tree at an estimated 85 mph.Apparently I never even hit the brakes and I didn't have my seat belt on.The firefighters said they were suprised I wasn't thrown out of the car.It was nasty but hey I made the news the next day.I loved that car but didn't love the $20 a day in gas I was using delivering Pizzas.Hondas make really good delivery cars.

did not want to give up the 91 GMC- great truck, great mileage and only reason i gave it up was because no one would drive a stick on the floor.

I gave up my 93 Satty SL2. (But the HHR is still part Saturn Ion.)
I bought that car new, and from the night I bought it home, I began taking it apart. Relocated the spare to a compartment I made in the trunk, and put in the amplifer (tried a few, settled on a 5 channel Aura) along with crossovers, 6 disk cd changer, power splitter, etc. Had an 8 inch Aura sub in a nice box. I ran 2 gauge wire from the battery in the engine compartment. Had 4 speakers in the stock locations (the same Rockford Fosgates I transfered to the HHR) and 2 tweeters I mounted in the front vents (came out great-I used the grill as a template and drilled holes directly in the plastic with a Dremel). A Pioneer P80-MP head unit completed the system-this is the unit I will put in my HHR as soon as the interface kit is availble. I put a low restriction muffler, CAI system, 8 mm wires, and nice tires. The car was quick, sounded nice, and had a killer sound system.

All was fine until the tranny started doing the famous Saturn 'reverse slam', where it hesitates then bangs into reverse. Then, the warning light began coming on indicating that the traction control was not locking. The car has an upper valve body, which is supposed to be fairly easy to work on and replace, but the parts would cost $650. I was considering doing it, but then decided to check the engine. A compression test revealed a bad cylinder. It was then I knew it was time for a new car, and the HHR was the one.

I didn't have to give up completely. I had an '04 Silverado Extended Cab truck with the Hyper-tech chip, flowmaster dual exhaust, K&N and a throttle body block. The truck runs great, but much like a couple of the other folks here, I drive a ways to work, 92 miles one way and more on days I visit local clients. I had to get something with great mileage, and I loved the HHR the first time I saw one. I took the truck and gave it to my fiance's 17 yr old son to drive so I still have it when I need it. I took the Hyper-tech off and programmed it on the fiance's '04 Suburban. Yes we ARE a Chevy family! Sandstone Silverado and HHR and Silverstone Suburban.

I traded in my 2003 PT Cruiser GT Turbo. The PT had a lot more power (due to turbo), but the HHR blows it away with comfort and ride. I rented an HHR in Florida a couple of weeks ago and can say that the 2.4 liter engine has a lot more power than the 2.2 liter engine in the HHR. (Glad I got the 2.4 engine).

At the Cleveland Auto Show, I was meeting someone at the HHR booth and almost everyone looking at the HHR was a PT Cruiser owner, wanting to make the change! Good news for Chevy.

This was a $26,000 astro, and is great for kids on long trips, and for general use around town. Able to haul lots of things in it. But, the Astro had to go, driving too many miles, not able to pass too many Gas Stations now @$2.50 a gallon..and it has a 25 gallon tank. The wife drives a 2003 Impala LS RED(78,000 miles), and wants my HHR. My Daughter drives a 1996 Monte Carlo LS RED (220,00 miles) Yea really, and also wants the HHR. The HHR doesn't have the room of the Astro, already took a week long trip, not much room for luggage, but it wasn't the Astro, soo...The 2.4 has a little pep, but isn't a 6 cyclinder, definately not a V-8... but the gas mileage is lots better, feast or famine. Soo, have to see how the HHR stacks up against the Astro for hauling cargo, and people. The HHR does have the best attention getting stance of anything around though. The little thing is fun to drive. I have the 2LT, automatic, F3 suspension, Leather interior, sunroof, XM radio, all the nice goodies, but not the roof rack. Oh it's the Dark Silver with sun roof too....thinking about a vanity plate, "MID-LIFE CRISIS", or something simular.

Gonna fess up here. Just came out of my 2nd (not so) mini van, a '98 Dodge Grand Caravan, but it did have the "Sport" package!

I'm a single parent, but my daughter is 19 now, so the "soccer dad" and taxi service days are over.

I liked the storage space and it came in very handy for vacation trips, hauling camping gear, high end bikes, etc. But having come from a youth of muscle cars and sports cars, I found my 5-speed HHR to be the best for me and love it.

I didn't really give it up. It's sittting here right next to my HHR. My 96 VW Jetta GL. 180K+ miles and still going. Nothing wrong with it other than a few little rust spots. After 10 years of service, I knew I needed to buy something new. The Jetta has to be, hands-down, one of the best cars, and reliable, that I have ever owned. Now I'm giving the VW to my 16-1/2 year old nephew. It's his birthday present.;)

Traded in my all black 1997 GMC Sonoma SLS, Sportside, with the 4.3L HO Vortec, Goodyear Eagles all around the wheels. Way way too much power for that small truck, and sucked down the gas something major. Got 19 mpg highway if I was by myself, no cargo, and had the wind at my back.

I didn't trade in the 2001 Escort, I gave it to my tattoo artist kid, he is serving his apprentiseship and needed a reliable ride. We are also bringing his '52 Chevy hot rod back to life, we built it while he was in high-school, but the small block needs to be worked/replaced and it's time for a redo for the whole car. My work ride is a '92 Corsica and I love that old horse...The two loves of my life, my wife and my HHR spend the days together.

Traded in a 2002 Dodge Ram Crew Cab - it was great for camping and long trips, but once gas hit $3 (again), it was killin' me - about $75 to fill up every week - that's like another car payment! Anyway, my lease was up so I started looking into the HHR and really liked it. I'll get another truck later, as the whole famn damily still likes to go camping. For now, we take trips in the wife's Honda Pilot, which is also great and not too bad on gas (V6). This one runs pretty good yet, even with almost 180,000 miles on it. My boyfriend loves how much he saves on gas over the 74 Olds. It's a 5 spd like my HHR and that thing can really go even in some pretty decent snow. Will keep it until it bites the big one, which could be another 180,000 miles.

Ever since High School (1980) I wanted a Ford Pinto Station Wagon, well, at age 43, I bought one off EBay. No dents, interior (except for seats) perfect, paint great. I bought it from it's orginal owner who paid cash for it and still had all the reciepts.

I drove it for a while and really enjoyed it. Great running little car. Then the HHR came along ....so long PINTO!

I drove by it's new home and what a shame, the young kid that bought it just doesent seem to appriciate this antique. It's NOT in the same shape as when I sold it to him.

From what I spent on parts, gas, and everything else I don't regret the trade in. I won't even tell you what the dealership gave me for it (embarrassing), but trading it in for 0% APR for 72months def made it worth my wile.

'99 Chevy Suburban with 92K miles on it.:( I was driving a '96 Monte Carlo to work (I bought it for my daughter a couple of months ago - it's a cherry with 56K miles on it - for $4500). Since she starts driving at the end of August, I was worried about gas mileage since I drive 60 miles round trip to work. The "little Suburban" will do all the big one did except pull my 29 foot camper. I worked out a deal with Dad to use his truck when we go camping, so I'm a WHOLE lot better off.:thumb:

I just ordered my HHR today...so after the estimated 4 weeks delivery, it will be replacing my 1998 Mercury Mystique (225K miles...it doesn't owe me a thing). The Mystique has been a good car for the most part, but everything seems to be wearing out at once (leaking A/C compressor shaft seal, oil pan gasket leak, blocked coolant bypass valve in transmission, rusting sills, flaking bumper paint, burned out sunroof motor, clunking CV joint, worn out tires....etc, etc.). The HHR will be much more practical since I'm a part time gigging musician and it should be better on gas as well. I'll still have a 1993 Z28 and 1989 Iroc-Z in the garage for fun!

2005 Trailblazer.
I had been driving SUV's for the past 17 years ('89 GMC Jimmy, '00 Blazer, '05 TB) and I needed a change, and something with better MPG.

All of my previous vehicles were black, and it was time for a change there too - a radical one, my HHR 2LT is Victory Red :-)

When I went to test drive an HHR last month, they rolled out a black one for me to drive, since my last two vehicles I had bought there was black ;-)

Now if the stock market recovers this year, we might be lookin' at trading in the wife's 03 Impala on another one - same color.

well, at first, I didnt exactly "give it up"...but I relieved it from "daily driver" status.

http://www.markviii.org/~blackicelsc/BJ1.JPG

a 1994 Lincoln Mark VIII.
28+ mpg, 4.6 DOHC 280hp, fast, sleek, luxurious, sporty, and a well-modified version, by me.

But at 175k miles, and the thought of spending more money on it due to age/use, was frightening...so I went looking. Found the HHR's so reasonably priced, I had to check them out. always loved them, but thought they cost quite a bit more. Found my DSM 2006 2LT with all options bu leather and roof spoiler, on New Year's Eve, 2007.

drove it home that night, parked the Lincoln a week later, and my HHR has assumed the daily driver role.

a month and a half later, I decided to sell my Lincoln.

We traded in a 2002 Grand Prix on the HHR in 2006, but at that time it was my Wife's car. I gave up my 2003 Honda Accord last december when we purchased our Freestyle, and then I became the primary driver of the HHR. Therefore, I feel like I gave up the Honda for this car. The Honda had great as mileage and was a really nice car, but I really prefer the wagon utility of the HHR. Now if it could become more reliable I would actually be happy with it.

No trade in.

Our family has a problem 'letting go' of our Chevy's so I passed on my pristine 99 V6 S10, "Indy" to my sister as a second vehicle for all of us to use if needed (we live next door to each other). The S10 is a good workhorse to have around. ;)

Sis and BIL did give me some cash and GM points for Indy and along with my down and rebates, got about $6K knocked off my loaded Blackie.

Old thread just to add to it since I bought my new HHR in March of '06. I gave up a 99 Buick Regal GS 3800 SC V6 with 100+K miles on the clock. It was a nice loaded four door that ran like a top, but seemed to have developed AC problems around 85K miles, I kept fixing it, but finally decided enough was enough and found the HHR on the lot. You really need good AC in Florida.

The HHR has more usable cargo room, better gas milage (30+ vs 25) and new hopefully better technology. So far after 27K miles the HHR seems like a good car. Not quite the same quality ride as the Buick, but it gets to point A to point B very well.

That`s a tough one to call I couldn`t part with either.BUT if something was to happen to cause one to be totaled beyond repair I would prefer the Monte take it to save the Camaro.I think the Z28 will hold a better return then the Monte in the long run those Z28`s are pulling good numbers now.

I gave up a loaded 2002 Chevy Avalanche Z71 4X4. It was black with painted orange/yellow custom pin-stripes. I had "gator-backed" the plastic cladding black to match the paint. Being the first year of production it had the special leather/cloth seats with the leather bow-ties on each seat. It was definitely a cherry truck and I miss it but the HHR is proving to be very nearly as useful and it gets better gas mileage. It's an orange 07 2LT with the chrome package, sunroof and black leather.

One was a '99 Plymouth Breeze w/ 157k, that I bought and rebuilt, hated to see this one go because of the blood, sweat and tears that it took to rebuild and keep it going.

The other one was a '93 Toyota Camry w/ 195k, it was a beater. Took some sweat to keep it going too.

I gave them two trade-ins:
a '90 Buick Riviera and a 1987 Ranger - both of them on thier last legs.

the Riviera was a low-mileage beauty when I got it, but 10 yrs of commuting on Houston expressways is like a grinder. It was dying slowly.

The Ranger was a lemon from the start. I could drive it to work, about 6 miles, and back w/o much problems, but if I drove it 10 or miles it would start stalling and eventually die. NO professional mechanic was able to figure out why.

The last straw for the Riviera was when some @$$hole broke in and stole the stereo and busted up the dash to do it. The last straw for the Ranger was when it stranded me on the tollroad about 20 miles from home & I didn't get home until late at night.

I sold "my baby" but it wasn't because I wanted to or that I wanted an HHR. My hubby rolled & totaled our 2000 Chevy Blazer. Both it and my Mustang were paid off. My baby was not a family and not practical at all especially in snow. So we fought tooth and nail to get a good insurance payout on the Blazer and then I did the hardest thing ever and sold my baby. We pooled the money and bought my hubby a '97 Ford Escort with only 21,000 miles on it for cheap (lucked out and bought from a family friend who maintained the car religiously, changing the oil every 3 months and replacing the tires just because she figured it needed it!) I spent 3 months searching for a car for myself, I was looking at PT Cruisers and HHRs. Finally found my Violet. It was hard to go from a car that I bought new and took such excellent care of to a used vehicle. :( I ordered my Mustang and customized it exactly how I wanted it. I was there when she was unloaded off the car carrier at the dealer and besides people at the factory and the shag man at the dealer I was the first person to ever drive her. I maintained her well and she was pristine when I sold her. Violet was not so lucky. She's been rode hard (former rental) but hopefully I can bring her back to life, it will just take some time and money.

After nearly 4 years, we were going to trade in our beloved '99 Cadillac Catera in late summer, for an HHR. Well, the time turned out to be now. The valve train is not getting oil and it sounds like a diesel. Couldn't even trade it the way is it. I don't want to stick any time or money into it. Still looks and drives great though. I'm sure going to miss it. It was a fun car to drive. Going to 4 cyl is sure quite a change, but I'm looking forward the gas savings!
