For all of you thinking of disassembling your bowtie emblems and repainting the backside of the clear plastic, the good news is that they do come apart.
cj already told you how to remove the bowtie from the grille using floss or something like that. I used 0.020 safety wire and wrapped each end around screwdrivers and got mine off.
The clear plastic will also come out of the chrome frame but it isn't at all easy. After spraying mine down real good with decal and label remover I let it soak over night to allow the remover to soak into the adhesive.
I then wedged a single edge razor blade in between the clear plastic and chrome frame and used the razor to lift the lens away from the chrome frame. Once it was raised a bit I used a putty knife with thin cardboard folded over it to finish raising the lens out of the frame.
That's the good part.
After cleaning off all of the adhesive I wet sanded all of the backing from the lens. What I discovered is that the lens itself is tinted an amber color, then the back side of the lens is chrome plated so that the bowtie appears gold. So if your wanting to change the color of the bowtie your going to have to paint it on the outside (the lens), painting it on the back side won't give you the desired color because of the tinted lens. -Dan
