<img src="http://www.chevyhhr.net/news/silver.jpg" align="left" border="0" hspace="5" vspace="2">If you're in the market for a new car, choose one that is silver. Why? Silver cars are involved in far fewer crashes than cars of other colors.

According to a study by researchers at the University of Auckland in New Zealand that assessed the effect of car colors on the risk of serious injury in over 1,000 Auckland drivers between 1998-99, silver cars were 50 percent less likely to be involved in a crash resulting in a serious injury when compared with white cars.

Reuters reports that the least safe car colors are brown, black, and green. The risk factor for white, yellow, gray, red, and blue cars is in the middle range and about the same for each. Globally, about 3,000 people die every day in a car crash.

About half the drivers in this study had been involved in a crash in which one or more of the occupants had been admitted to the hospital or died, while 571 were not involved in crashes and served as a control group, reports Reuters. Even after taking into account the vehicle and road conditions, driver's age, gender, and educational level, as well as whether the driver had been using drugs or alcohol and had worn a seatbelt, the color of the car still had an impact on the likelihood of a crash.

Why? The researchers have no idea, but they speculate that silver, a light color that is highly reflective, may make cars more visible on the highway. "Increasing the proportion of silver cars could be an effective passive strategy to reduce the burden of injury from car crashes," lead study author Sue Furness told Reuters.

Silver was also the most popular car color in the United States, Europe, and Asia last year, according to the most recent DuPont Global Color Popularity.

The study findings were published in the British Medical Journal

Sandstone wasn't mentioned either, so hopefully that means that I'm not prone for an accident! Actually, I'd guess since it's basically the tan version of the silver and highly reflective it would be low as well?!?

Mine is black, and I can say that I've had more than a couple close calls already in the past 5 months. People are so inattentive. It's amazing what some will do to save 10 seconds of travel time. I thought red would have been more dangerous than the study suggests.

Which is why this entire study borders on the inane. The importance of color pales in comparisson to how a person drives AND the jerks around him. Those are not constants for the study. Some buffoon weaving through traffic yaping on his cell...it wouldn't matter if I had neon yellow with hot pink zig zag stripes.

Amen Krejaton...very good way to look at the whole matter...and I couldn't agree more.

I guess that would explain why a "silver" road ranger passed me in my coach on the right in a single lane road construction at 65 MPH on Interstate 40. I am 70 FT long with my trailer behind me. The construction zone ended 600 feet after he passed. Go figure. I guess It was the silver that made him decide to put his family and him at risk and pass me on the right.
I am saved---- I bought a bright silver HHR. !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I`m more worried about parking lots than anywhere.
Someone should design a door guard strip.Couldn`t imagine getting a ding in my door.
I park far from everyone else, but sure enough someone always want to be near.
My wife stays in shape walking w/ me!!!!

The only time I've ever been hit, I was driving a silver car. The first night I had my HHR, I was almost hit twice (figures it was in a parking lot!).

I have this "thing" with Silver vehicles. Out of all the cars I've ever owned only 2 were not silver. I went to purchase my HHR and out of the 5 they had on the lot, only the SILVER one had what I wanted! :thumb:
