Here is a step by step on how I installed a new shifter boot on my 5 speed.

Lift up on the back of the grey part on the center consal.
Be sure not to lift it to high as you may snap off the front at the bolts.

You than reach under the grey plastic and pop up the crome trim.
I cut the boot at the top of the shifter to get it off.

You than pop out the boot and the black plastic trim out of the crome trim.
The boot is stapled to the black trim. Just remove the staples and the boot will come off. Then just do the steps backwards. You need a good stronge stapler to get through the plastic. Hope this will help anyone wanting to do this mod.:thumb:

Is the "how to" much different for the automatic?

I still want a shorter (in height, not throw!) shifter.

Still lookin' for that... :thumb:

I'm not to sure. I haven't even seen a automatic HHR yet. I would think It would come apart mostly the same.

There is no boot on the Automatic Shifter, it has a slidder that hides the works of the shifter. As far as a shorter one, well...I would say someone will come up with something, but mine is short enough as is, have to reach down to get to it now..
