Any ideas on what the 1/4 times for the HHR's are like?

probly realy slow. ITs a FWD 4cyl SUV. i would guess high17s or maybe even 18s with the 2.4. my dads stock '02 camaro automatic ran 13.2 with the lowest octane gas and he was takin it easy and i think he was even in overdrive.

Kar Krazie why don't you make the trip over the hill to LACR and find out. Just let me know what day and I'll show up to say hi.

It can't really be that slow can it?
I come from the Saturn community so I forget that the rest of GM is metal.

So maybe you're right, but I'd figure at least somewhere in the 16's.

How much does the HHR weigh?

My 99 SC1 (SOHC, 100hp) is rated around 17 or 18 seconds. It weighs somewhere around 2400 lbs. The DOHC version is rated at 124hp and is in the 16's.

So for that much power I would think it would be a little bit quicker, unless it weighs about 1000lbs more.

I was told the HHR weighs almost 4 tons.......can anyone verify that???????

ummmm 4 tons is 8,000 lbs. There is no way 143 hp would work. An excursion weighs over 9,000lbs (didn't know that). And its about 3 hhrs so whoever told u this had a a beetle layin eggs in their brain.
FYI I believe the hhr weighs 3155lbs.

well that article said 16.9 at 83, an acceleration calculator i did said 17.9 at 83 for the 2.2L and for the 2.4L it says 16.8 at 88.75mph...so maybe you guys are guessing pretty close. I suppose the extra 750 lbs makes a big difference.

Registration weight is 3019, and I have found that here in virginia that the registration weight is within 1 to 2 hundred pounds of actual wet weight.

Mine is registered at 3202#. It probably depends on model and options.

for every 100 lbs it will run one tenth of a second slower, so an extra 1000 lbs compared to a vehicle thats otherwise exactly the same and driven exactly the same it will run 1 second slower.

Times as posted in the February 2006 Car & Driver. The test HHR had a 2.4 and 5-speed manual.

0-60 mph : 8.0 seconds
0-90 mph : 17.4 seconds
1/4 mile : 16.1 seconds @ 87 mph
Rolling 5-60 mph: 8.9 seconds
The top speed is 126

numbers seem botched. 0-60 at 8.0 yet 5-60 is 8.9? something doesn't add up...

I thought all cars took longer to get to 60 from a rolling start.

They usually do, because from a dead stop everything hooks up much quicker, and from a rolling start an automatic has to go through the gyrations of kick down and that takes time. With a manual, rolling at 5 MPH usually means your in second gear and at that speed second gear will want to bog the engine. You can do it in first gear but be prepared to shift into second very quickly after you launch because your already rolling and engine RPM is already building.

After sorting through all the expert / amateur opinions in this thread, I've scientifically concluded why SoCal's HHR is soooo fast.... :thumb:

It's the stubby antenna, folks!! Gotta be worth a full second or more on the 1/4 mi. and at least 15 MPH trap speed!! :)

So... I ordered one of the previously guarded speed-secret antennas!! :D

Look out world!!! :p: :one:

My HHR LT1
From the factory with the 2.2 ecotech and the 5 speed tranny ran

16.868 in the 1/4 mile at a speed of 81.54

now how do i make it faster lol

That's funny right dere, an 8000 pound HHR.... that sounds more like a Hummer than an HHR.... I was thinking somewhere just over 3000 pounds is what I heard...

Well here is a little real life 1/8th mile and 1/4 mile times from this fathers day weekend. Mine is a 2.4l automatic that is bone stock except for synthetic oil and Bosch 2 plugs.

Best times (not all in the same runs)

1/4 mile ET 16.79 @ 82 mph
1/8 mile ET 10.89 @ 70 mph
60 foot time 2.434
MPH 83
Reaction time .515

My car was so 1/4 mile consistent it was sick. I ran 22 consecutive test & tune runs and all varied between 16.80 - 16.83 and all were 81 mph. My 60 ft. times however were all over the map in the beginning ranging from 2.75 - 2.43 which hurt 1/8th mile consistency.

The weather was hot and muggy which is why the car was down a couple mph. It was 90 - 95 all day with 90% humidity (thick).

In the beginning I started out with 20 psi in the front and 40 psi in the rear (stock 17" wheels). I had too much traction and the motor was getting bogged down from lack of hampsters on the hampster wheel, so I went to 24 psi then to 30. I stayed as 30 the rest of the day and it was hooked up perfect without dropping rpm's at launch and without barking the tires. I torque brake launched at 2500 rpm's. The converter was too engaged at 3000 to make the launch effective.

I am lowering it this week which should help a little and then I am going to play with intake options. I will try to keep this page updated as i go.

The great part of this adventure is that I won Sportsmen (Trophy) bracket 2 out of 47 cars which I was estatic about. All I had to do was react lower than .600 and it was in the bag every single run. I dialed in at 16.80 and never changed the shoe polish all day. I made the finals in top eliminator but red lighted trying to out tree the guy with the 8.13 second Camaro.

There is no doubt that when the humidity gets down around 65% the car will run 16.7's all day long. I am a data freak and a little side note is that everyone is stuck on these motors performing best between 180 - 190 degrees (coolant temp). I have not dyno'd yet (next week) but ET wise my worst times were at these temps. Every 16.83 and lower run was when the coolant temp was reading 200 or above. The 16.7 run was 214 at the time I staged.

Welcome Matt! Good post with a lot of important data. You're spot-on about the 2.4L temps; it likes to run "hot." Some of our dyno tests had it running up to 228, but it is quick to recover and makes good power there.

What fuel are you running? rying any octane boosters? The 2.4L responds well to Shell V-Power and 108+ - might want to give it a try.

I look forward to reading your future posts! :thumb:

Thanks guys I appreciate the welcome. I forgot to mention that I am about 500 ft. above sea level just so you can compare apples to apples. I also just let the car shift itself however I am going to manually shift it this weekend for comparison. Also those with 16" wheels should see better 60ft. times as the additional sidewall works in your favor.

87 octane from Speedy Q w/ zero additives. I have my own theory but I will wait til next week when I get it on the dyno to share it.

I am a piston, crankshaft and induction engineer. I build A Fuel motors and am a cylinder head specialist and left side motor wrench on the Bowen Racing A Fuel dragster. I have been a die hard aircooled VW guy forever and bought this to burn miles (23,000 in 3 1/2 months) as I travel to Canada a lot for business.

I am going to test different intake configurations (even was given one of those Tornado atomisers to test), then a few exhaust combos then work with the ECU and go through it all over again. I will try to add as much as I can and will add pics. This will not turn out to be a full drag car but I am really considering Bogart wheels and slicks for no other reason than because. I want to see how consistent the car stays with little mods.

Nice forum!

Hey Matt... Welcome.
Are you doing all your test-n-tunes @ Lapeer Dragway? Lemme know- I'll try and make it up there someday. Wouldn't mind running my bike (slightly modded '95 CBR 600) just for kicks! That is... I think they let bikes run there. Think it's like $20 to do as many runs as you want, right (first come, first serve)? I'd prolly run early due to the bike generally running hot.
Lemme know.
Thx.
