View Full Version : Sindy's Triple Lake Pipes installed
SindyDix 05-11-2006, 11:02 PM With in 24 hours of aquiring my Triple Lake Pipes from Mike at SoCalHHR.com, I had them installed.
After inquiring at 5 local muffler shops after work this afternoon, I found a Midas Muffler. I was quoted $80 to $120 price range. Midas did it for $40!
The other shops either wouldent do it, or dident have time TODAY! (I had to have it done today, no waiting for me!)
More MODs yet to come!

GDZHHR 05-11-2006, 11:29 PM WOW!!

BIG JIM WOODMAN 05-12-2006, 12:05 AM Sindy, lookin realllll cool!,baby got some pipes on her now.
dan-d 05-12-2006, 12:17 AM You know I'm a fan of lake pipes and your's look as great as most. But I think the 60" pipes are too short for the HHR. I have the 70" pipes on mine and they really fill up the space from wheel well to wheel well better IMO. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking your ride since it is one of the sweetest white HHR's on the block, I'm just stating my preference. But all in all....lookin good :thumb:
BlackHHR 05-12-2006, 12:43 AM looking very sweet Sindy. Love them on the white.

MikeX 05-12-2006, 08:32 AM Killer looks!
Was wondering how the finish of the pipes holds up, considering they are mounted below the steps, and many people seem to get the steps installed to protect the paint. Seems like the pipes would now get sandblasted.
ng8650 05-12-2006, 09:49 AM Wow. I'm not a big fan of the pipes, but this is the first ride that I actually like how they look.
Sindy I think you got the record for fastest mods on an HHR! How long have you had this ride now? Man you don't waste any time.

BlackHHR 05-12-2006, 10:33 AM Thanks for posting that pic of the black HHR with the pipes. Now I no how mine will look. I still like the white better Sinddy.
JESSE 05-12-2006, 12:31 PM Sindy, you HHR is looking Sooooooooooooooo Kooooooooooooooool. The lake pipes are an excellant touch!:thumb: What's next?

The beauty is: everyone has their own opinion! I only sell the 60" Lakes because I felt the 70's were a bit "too much' pipe for the HHR. The 60-inchers start and end where the running board flares are. I realize some might want 70-inch pipes, but man - it takes a LOT of room to stock these babys as the boxes are LONG!
I can get the 70-inch Lakes easily, but will wait until I get requests for them first. :thumb: In the meanwhile - everyone enjoy what you have!
erf2u 05-12-2006, 12:43 PM Sindy, your HHR just keeps getting sweeter and sweeter...simply awesome....now go get some lake pipes for you Road Ripper.....

Don't get me wrong Mike I'm not knocking the 60" pipes, just stating my preference. Some may prefer their pipes to be the length of their running boards, but I wanted to fill the entire length of space between the wheel wells. Regardless which pipes one selects they all look absolutely awsome to me. I can't say I blame you for not stocking a ton of these, they do take up a lot of room. Since I got mine along with several other goodies before I got my HHR, all those boxes were in my way out in the shop, especially the lake pipes. -Dan
SoCalHHR 05-12-2006, 02:16 PM We're completely on the same page Dan; - whatever turns you on is where it's at! Some buy running boards, some don't. Some buy stubbies; some go fishing instead! I was just making it known that I CAN get 70" Lake Pipes if someone really wants them...
As you said...Lake Pipes just RULE regardless of size.
Well, I'm off to go pick up the Sway Bars now...:thumb:

four61ob 05-15-2006, 07:04 PM I'm confused (easy to happen BTW) are these pipes functional or just eye candy ? I ask because you had them installed at a muffler shop....
SindyDix 05-15-2006, 07:44 PM heres a great hint...... 6 pipe outlets, 4 cylinder car! LOL
hey, wait, that wouldent be true, one pipe outlet, 4 cylinders... ok, that theory dident work....
Pure eye candy baby!
dan-d 05-15-2006, 08:26 PM I'm confused (easy to happen BTW) are these pipes functional or just eye candy ? I ask because you had them installed at a muffler shop....
I'm sure Sindy has hers for show like the rest of us. Like any lake pipes they can be made functional, however on these triple outlet pipes only the end outlet would be functional since the other two are dummy outlets. I know I get a lot of ribbing for having these on my HHR and not functional. But if you've been around as long as I have you would know that a good number of lake pipes on older hot rods were only for show as well. Most were done like this because they didn't want the hot exhaust to discolor them. And even if they were hooked up they would most likely still have the duals out the rear since the lakers were only uncapped for racing since they were usually hooked in before the mufflers.
SindyDix 05-15-2006, 08:33 PM very well stated.... I was at a total loss of how to articulate that thought!
GDZHHR 05-15-2006, 09:48 PM sindy, gotta question for you.
I'm planning on lowering mine, I've got 16's, with the lakes added, what's your clearance like?
I've got a lot of scrapers around my town.
Trying to figure out if I should do one or both and if one which one. I'm really wanting to lower it but the more I see the lakes....well, I WANT!
SindyDix 05-15-2006, 10:03 PM I'm sure every HHR might be slightly different.
This is my measurement... 3.75"
from the floor to the lowest point on the pipe.
I have stock 17" and Gold-Line springs.
I havent hit anything yet, I do go slow over suspect bumps/dips though.
I'm sure SoCalHHR's can anwser more specific technical questions much better than I can though.
I hope this helps.... if ya need another image, I can do that in a jiffy!

And I'll definately be talking to Mike before I do anything.

I'll speak up because Sindy has 17's - not 16's. The 16's sit a bit lower. With 16's your HHR will have 3.5-inches from the bottom of the Lakes to the deck when lowered with Gold-Lines. Olnt 3-inches from the bottom of the tips! Speed bumps must be scouted out in advance...high angled driveways - don't even think about it.
I drove mine for 4 months lowered with 16's and lakes, then switched to a taller tire to gain a bit of height. :D
If you're a die-hard scaper freak like me, it's not nearly as bad as some cars.
If you're faint of heart when you hear the Lakes scraping - it's not for you.
BONUS: Actually the Lake pipes have a nice rounded bottom on the tips - this is the main point of contact when scraping. Since it is smooth and rounded, very little damage is ever done. :thumb:
GDZHHR 05-15-2006, 10:09 PM Thanks Mike!

I was also wondering how the finish holds up especially here in the midwest, with all the road salt that we use in the wintertime. They look really nice especially on Sindys white HHR, would like to have them but not sure how they would hold up.

I know this was asked of Sindy but I thought I'd chime in to support Mike's (SoCalHHR) statement. Like his mine has 16's and when I had the Goldlines I had 3.5" clearence and no scrapes. But just as a suggestion you might want to consider the single outlet pipes without end caps, this will give you a little more road clearence. I would check with Mike to see if he has a source.
SindyDix 05-16-2006, 12:07 AM He does, have them and the data in question. We talked about the single slant pipe.... I finally decided on the Trip's though!

Yeah, although the odds of scraping are better with the triples I decided on them too. :thumb:

They are for looks only from what I understand.
cj krause 05-18-2006, 01:17 PM i am going to make mine functional just to use for shows
and some fun
you have to buy an exectric cutout and a y and then have a muffler shop hook them up
the switch inside to the cutout will open the pipe to the side lakes and vuala,,, they are functional
since there is no muffler and less pressure the HHR wont run as nice

Welcome to the Forum Greg! :welcome: :welcome: :welcome:
Pure eyecandy for me baby!
www.SoCalHHRs.com has them and info about 'em too!
Note... and this has been addressed elsewhere also... if one is to make them functional, heat will melt the running boards is so equiped.
dan-d 05-18-2006, 03:44 PM Hi,

Hi Greg and welcome aboard, we're glad to have ya.
As for the lake pipes, like most mine are purely for looks. Read through the forums, you'll see where I've posted about lake pipes and some of the history behind them. Some folks will choose to make them functional just for kicks, but on these 4 bangers they'll most likely run like crap with them open since they won't have any mufflers and the absence of back pressure will make these cars fall flat on their face.....but it would still be fun...LOL
rocklifter 05-18-2006, 11:31 PM Hello and thanks for the nice greetings. I appreciate the responses pertaining to the pipes and does make sense that performance would suffer due to a lack of back pressure etc....
I tell you what would be cool also and some may like it and some may not...
But a V8 in the HHR with the pipes running straight and functional....Course Im sure some rich or heavily endorsed person probably already has done just that....
Thanks again for making me feel welcome...
Greg
BlackHHR 05-18-2006, 11:39 PM I was thinking that you could put a round muffler in the middle of the car and put a Y pipe out to the ends of the side pipes. I engine would have the back pressure it needs and you would have the look of functional side pipes. The performance shop that installed my new muffler is already looking into this.:thumb:

True, this is an option that has been done many times over the years. But it's a biatch to do but is possible.

That would work great on the Oval Slant Tip pipes - but you must remember; on the Triple Lakes, only the rear outlet is "live" - the other two are bolt-on dummies. I think it would be funny to have exhaust only coming out the last tip - AND to have them all uncapped and see that the first two are fake...but that's just me.
If I were going "live" with the side pipes, the Slant Tip Ovals are the only way to go (IMO).
BlackHHR 05-19-2006, 01:11 AM True to that Mike. I was going to go with the single slant tip pipes.
I love the Laker pipes, but I want mine to be functional. Thanks for the input.

Just a note on the 70-inchers. While they do "fill" the bottom of the car, they also block the jack pads, so if you get a flat you will not be able to use your stock scissor jack out on the road. At home I use a floor jack - but not everyone carrys one in their HHR. With 70-inch Lakes, it would be very difficult to find a jack point...
The 60-inch Lakes leave plenty of room to get your jack in both the front and rear jack pointd on the HHR. Just thought I should put that out there for those considering the longer pipes.
As Dan said, we can get 70" Lake Pipes (in all 3 styles), for anyone who wants them. :thumb:
Navyflyer11 06-06-2006, 12:43 PM Well, if your wife likes them that's a BIG +...LOL

I don't have my spare tire or jack.
You can get the normal slant tip in 70" right.
If not the 60" will do.
Hope my new muffler will fit in the middle of the car with not to much problem.

Mike, I can agree with you on most things but your statement above is completely false. As you can see I've taken a couple pictures of my HHR with the 70" lake pipes up on the factory scissors jack with enough clearance to do a tire change. On the front the scissors jack frame will contact the lake pipe before contacting the jack pad, but the contact is so minor that it doesn't interfere with it's ability to jack up the car. Once the jack contacts the jack pad it lifts the pipe off of the jack due to the desigh of the scissors, then it is only contacting the jack pad. On the rear it doesn't contact the pipes at all.

BTW: This post is in no way meant to be a gotcha, I told you so, or a slam dunk against Mike in any way. As most of you that read my posts know, I don't play that game and only post if I think it may be helpful to others. I also do my research before posting anything (it's a guy thing...I hate to be wrong...LOL). As most of you know, I think Mike is one of the biggest contributors to this forum and you can take most of what he say's to the bank, but like everyone else he isn't perfect either. His statement just got me to thinking....Hmmmm, what to do if I have a flat? So I went out to see if my jack would work, not to prove Mike wrong, just for my own piece of mind. -Dan

As you can see I've taken a couple pictures of my HHR with the 70" lake pipes up on the factory scissors jack with enough clearance to do a tire change.
I'm guessing you had the bags set at ride height when you did this? What was the difference between the ride height you're using compared to the ride height with the Gold-Lines (I thought the settings you are using had it sitting just a bit higher than it did with the Gold-Lines, though not much)? Would the height difference, as minimal as it may be, make much of a difference in getting the scissor jack in place?
Maybe everyone that goes with the 70" pipes should just order the airbag kit from Mike, too! That would alleviate worries of potentially scraping the pipes, and make it easy to get the scissor jack in place. :thumb:

Man, I totally agree! In fact, I'm going to put a recommendation on the Lake Pipes product page about it! :D

I think he should just add it in to the 70" side pipe package at no extra charge. What do ya think Mike. PLEASE!!!:D
dan-d 06-08-2006, 07:24 PM I'm guessing you had the bags set at ride height when you did this? Well I did have the HHR set at ride height when I did the test jacking. The rear is just about the same height as it was with the Goldlines, the front is 1/2" higher. I have it set here to keep it a bit more level. If the front were down another 1/2" it wouldn't make a diff, at least not enough to prevent jacking up the car (trucklet).
Now with that all said, for those of you who does go with the bag kit. If I were to raise the HHR all the way up, using the scissors jack would be even easier.
But I have to agree with you, I think buying lake pipes should be a perfectly good excuse to toss in a bag kit too.
So, if anyone want's to ask someone else about the bag kit installation you can just ask the person who started this thread. He's my son Billy, he was my right hand man for the installation. :D :thumb:
