IMO, Sedona's scenery is MUCH better than Dragstaff -
- Flagstaff's higher elevation and a bit cooler than Sedona, but IMO beautiful only when it is covered in snow.
- Sedona's scenery is gorgeous any time of year, and much more tourist-oriented and tourist-friendly.
- Anyone who wants to end up in Flagstaff can head straight north from Sedona, anyway - it's a pretty drive and you can take two different routes to end up at the Grand Canyon, if you so please.

Either way, I'm slightly more than an hour away from both - let me know! I will absolutely try and make it.

The only reason I mentioned Flag, is because we could do a GC run...

I'm totally up for Sedona...let's see if there is any other interest.

We could go blazin' on the Jeep trails....or not! :lol:

I am all in for Flag. Its only a few hours drive from Tucson. Plus I could use the break from the +100 temps here! And... if anyone from Phoenix goes, or anyone has to drive through Phx on the way up, we could meet up and caravan up I-17.

Craig, we used to go mtn. biking in Sedona when I owned my bike shop. Very cool! We stay at L' Auberge - google it! I know some great places to eat and to hang in Sedona - but not too sure about cruisin' there. Sedona's cool - but it won't be this summer!!! Flag is a little more temperate - but not as iconic. I'm up for whatever you ADR's decide...

Agree with you the drive up to Flagstaff is very awesome ride. Since we are going up north we wont have to worry about it 120 outside. Maybe we should shoot for like the 2nd or 3rd week in July. Meet up in the valley and make the trip up as a group

It does not matter to me which location they both have pro's and con's and close enough to stay at one and take a run as a group to the other place. Flagstaff would probally be cheaper to stay at if anyone is worried about that. This time of year you may have more touriest in Sedona.
I suggest the 2nd or 3rd weekend in July. That should give people enogh time to make plans.

I am really figuring on the 15th. I made reservations at the Fairfield (on Minton) for the night of the 15th. I obviously can cancel those and do something else.

Need to discuss with the other Arizona "valley" people, but also was figuring on meeting them somewhere near the north side of Phoenix, early that morning (Flagstaff is about 2 hours from there). We will convoy from there.

Time, for the morning of the 15th, has not been established. But I would suggest very early.....which might make it hard on you. :steering: Time and date of departure for Zonies, really is dependent on what activities are planned and what you wish to participate in.... a drive to The Canyon (entry fee), which was mentioned by the Calif. people, have lunch, photos or whatever. Also, a run to Williams (about 30 miles west of Flagstaff). Some of the classic and antique car clubs have annual spring and fall rallies there.

Hey, for that matter, we could base as a group, in Williams...and go to The Canyon from there (Warning.....Williams is a small (and I mean small) tourist town...not a whole lot of activity day or night. But it does have some decent name brand lodgings which cater to the ski and Canyon people. I'm not sure, but I think their main street is still Old US 66.

Anyway, we need to get this thing going. It's summer...school is out... and people are planning other vacations, as well :confused:. We'll need to confirm lodgings soon because it is a summer, high country, "cool" weather, tourist area !!!

The early morning meet isn't such a hard thing for me since I am used to being up at 5am M-F for work. I am also on the outskirts of Marana so Ray Rd is just 45 min or so from me. As far as lodgings I dont care if its a motel 6 or radisson. All I really need is a bed thats softer than concrete and a nice breeze! This sounds like it is going to be fun! How far is the GC from Flag? Soon as times are set let me know!

So, seeing as I just read the flame war that is going on in the forum on Mike's intake results (which I thought was cool and gives me an idea of what to expect with mine...) does that mean all the Cali people are still going? is this trip still a go or is it busted? this seemed so fun! I did check rates at the days inn real fast and it runs about 70.00-80.00
Travelodge was about 85.00 a night. Just to give everyone an idea. I only check July 15th. I do not think there is much to really do there. It is more like the last stop people make before going to the canyon.

It is 57-miles from the Grand Canyon (about an hour's drive), and that's a fun road.

OK, I'm going to go waaaaaaaaaaaaay out on a limb here and make a suggestion:

How about...instead of everyone getting hotels, we stay at the Circle Pines KOA (http://www.circlepineskoa.com/) instead! If everyone could handle tent camping - I think we would all be able to have a real blast at night! :lol: We could have a campfire and play mini-golf! :D

I dunno, but it just seems like a lot more fun than a hotel...

I am thinking about driving down there...but that's an awful long way by myself. (800 miles - 11/hours) Now if someone were coming from the northern part of Arizona, just the other side of the Colorado border, I might reconsider. I'll keep an eye on this thread and see what turns up. I'm up for the campground idea...but like Mike...I'll sleep in the HHR...don't have any camping gear.

The "warden" and I will probably rent a cabin. I haven't used my camping gear in 15 years. Afraid to even check it out (to hot here, to try settings up a tent).

I've got tons of camping gear - but will sleep in the HHR! I'll use the tent for changing, etc.

The bike Club is meeting at the Fairgrounds, but I'm betting a fair amount of them will be at historic downtown as well.

I still like Williams because the KOA rocks! It's a little shorter drive to the GC also - and we can take some pics in historic downtown - which Flag doesn't have. I just don't think "hotrod run" when I think of Flag.

Mike here is an idea on the shirts, maybe put that on the back and just a a small hhr logo or something like that on the left chest area. Not sure if that would adjust the cost any, just an idea. I will send an email for a shirt and the boss said the KOA is cool with her. We will see about getting a cabin.

It looks like we would have tent sites available however we only have 1 one rm kabin and 1 two rm. They would run around $60 a nite and $80 a nite. We could probaly put a couple on a tent site if these are tents and they run about $20 a nite. The strip mall is right along the freeway you will not miss it. If I remember it is really named Anthem Outlet Mall. It will be on your left side. Also is a gas station right there so those who need to can fill up also. We plan on only Spending Saturday night, but will be ready to leave anytime in the morning.

My plan is to drive out Friday night, arriving late. We will spend Friday & Saturday nights at the KOA and leave for home Sunday morning.

Sorry I can't join you; sure wish I could go, but the whole famn damily's got other plans: Anyway, here's some Anthem info for ya, it's just north of me a few miles: The Anthem area is on I-17, exit #229. If you exit there, the outlet mall is on the West side of I-17 (the Anthem residential area is on the East). Basically, you exit and head west, and there are plenty of stores, gas stations, etc. - like the earlier post said, you can't miss it. For those of you who haven't been there in a while, they've added a lot of gas stations and fast food joints in the past year or so. There's also a good-sized food court inside the mall itself. Hope that helps; if anyone needs any more info, let me know! :cool:

UPDATE: Just spoke with Renee at the KOA (hey! that rhymes!), she said they are making a special area for a large family reunion next wee, and we will probably get to stay in that area during our time.

Our Group is getting the 15% discount rate of $19.81 per night for tent sites, so get your reservations in soon! For under $20/night, more people should be able to afford this trip. When making reservations, be sure to tell them you are with the "Western States HHR Group."

OTHER IMPORTANT INFO: Apparently Williams is under heavy FIRE watch currently, so campfires and charcoal burning hibachi's/BBQ's are not allowed. Propane cooking devices are preferred. (Looks like I'll be eating in town...)

Mike, I am still working on getting someone to go with me. I am now trying my son. I used the 30d pictures of the Grand Canyon as bait. We will see if he wants to go. Also, I know that Sindy wants to leave a lot earlier than I can. I can't get the day off as you know. :(

Sad as it is. I have lived in AZ my whole life except the 3+ years I was married. (she was military, saw Montana, Germany, Japan and a few other places) But as long as I have been in AZ I have NEVER been to the Grand Canyon. And now they're supposed to build a horseshoe shaped bridge, out over the canyon, made entirely out of a glass substance. So you can walk out and look straight down. That just gives me the heebie jeebies! Both my girlfriend and I are REALLY looking forward to camping out and seeing the GC. This is the most fun I've had since... well... let's leave it at that. Yeah ok. So this posting hasn't died. Just waiting to see what the Cali people want to do and what time you all want to get moving on Sat morning so the 2 Tucson people can meet the "valley" people and caravan to Flag. So saturday arrival for us kind of depends on what time you want to meet up. BTW::: this is long winded I know, but it's been a long day at work. Can't think straight!

en0oNmAI Do not feel bad about never making it to the canyon. I have lived here since 1979 and my first trip was 2 years ago. Should be a blast. We are looking forward to making the trip. I will be going back to the midwest tonight for a few days, need to go visit my grandparents and take the family for a trip. The hhr is going into the shop to have the nasty dent and scratch fixed on my hood while I am gone, so it will be ready to make the trip.

Been in Arizona since 1973. Had never seen the Grand Canyon till 2001. A group of 10 hiked in (I was the oldest) from the south rim, stayed 2 nights at The Phantom and hiked back out. Tough trip. But worth every ache and pain.

Attention all heading towards Flagstaff:
As of last night, there is an approximately 150-acre fire on the West side of Flagstaff that fire crews are currently working on. Long story short: Freeways (including I-40 and Route 66) are still open; some residential areas have been evacuated, and MOST IMPORTANTLY: Some campgrounds have been cleared out. I know some of you were planning on camping in the area this weekend, so you may want to call the KOA (or any other campgrounds/hotels/motels) to make sure everything is still o.k. for your trip. If you need additional iformation over the next day or two, a good source of info is: www.azcentral.com.

Not sure if I've been at the Grand Canyon during Mother Nature's "monthly visitor" or not, (too easy - too many jokes come to mind), but I have been there when that exact thing happened - we were in the Canyon area on a Tuesday; it was clear, sunny, and mid-80's. Woke up the next morning to a few feet of snow - it was awesome! The Canyon's beautiful, though, no matter the weather. :cool:

Maybe we should wait on setting up a time, till we know what plans are being set. I think there was something said about a run up to the GC, so we need to find out what time and day that would take place and anything else. Only my :2cents:

Wow. Did this thread just die? Any Cali folks have times set up for the GC drive and other such frivolous adventures? Is a 10am wake up too early or not early enough? We 'zonies need a time to be in Flag. Ok well... hope this can keep on going.

I'm all for leaving early for the GC run. It takes 1 hour to get there from Williams. If we leave at 9, that puts us there at 10. Any later than that makes for poor photos (when the sun is straight up - too many shadows), not to mention it will be hotter.

But, as a reminder, do not forget it is a saturday....with "cool country" and boating traffic going in that direction. And, one accident, or whatever, will back traffic up for hours. :mad: You'll also need to check in and dump your gear at the KOA.:smile:

Mapquest said axp 2 hours or 138 miles. It is about 30 minutes west of Flagstaff right on the freeway

I think it's just Jason and us from Tucson. Don't know how many folks we'll be picking up at Anthem in Phx. We will need a little time to get settled at KOA in Williams. If lighting is poor in late morn/midday, we could make GC run in afternoon . . . just a thought . . . .

Circle Pines KOA will remain open all summer, despite forest and lake closures in the area. We are NOT being impacted by the Sedona fire.

Fire restrictions are in effect. No wood or charcoal fires are allowed, and smoking is restricted to inside vehicles or on our porch. Propane stoves are permitted

You bet, several others are bringing kids also.

By the last check, all the cabins were gone.....but if you are interested, ask when you call to reserve a camp space. Mention you are from the Western Region HHR Club...they will give a discount if the minimum number is met and they are trying to group all the "campers" together.

I think I got the last cabin.

Retro once again welcome, and glad to see you jumped on board for the trip.
unless things changed we are meeting at the outlet mall around 7 am and going to meet everyone at the KOA and head up to the Canyon. My wife and I have a tent we are going to toss up for the night. There are a couple of members coming up from Tuscon and will meet us that the outlet mall. Once it gets closer we can exchange cell numbers so we can work out any minor details.

We are wanting to leave for the GC (that's "Grand Canyon" - not Guitar Center :D ), no later than 9am. It's 1-hour from Williams. so that puts us at the rim at 10am - good for pictures.

As always I'm flexible, so we will probably just leave whenever you guys pull in! :lol: You will most likely want to get out, stretch your legs, meet people and shoot the breeze for a while in Williams, if so, you should try to leave a bit earlier - we don't want to get to the Canyon at noon (it's hotter, and a bad time for pictures with sun straight up, too many shadows).

I have no problem with leaving early just know we have people coming up from Tuscon and that is about 2 hours from where they will meet us, I am guessing they do not want to leave at 4 am :lol:
As long as we have to taffic delays we should be there around 9 am so we can leave the KOA around 9:15 or so, enough to say hi meet everyone and hit the road. We can always chit chat at the GC and once we get back to the camp site.
I agree we dont want to get up to the GC very late due to the shadows. I went a couple of summers ago and we took the train out of williams up there and every though that was fun, it gets up there kinda late for good photos.
We got lucky and had cloud cover so that helped out.

Called the KOA and talked with someone other than Rene (she was out).

They have 6 spaces total, "rented" to anyone from Western States/Region HHR Club. She is suggested that other people have probably rented under only their personal names.

She also suggested those that did not mention the HHR Club should recontact them at 800 562-9379 and indicate the HHR group.....so the quantity discount can be given....and she can group Club members together..... I already have reconfirmed.

Good job "Deputy" Snoop :thumb: I know I told them about the club I also had to talk to someone else. She did find the info and booked me under the discounted price even though at the time we were a few short.

I would suggest anyone who did not say anything about the HHR club to callback so we can get the discount

Uh, which parking lot? I'm unfamiliar with the Anthem Outlet Mall. How many from the Valley plan to meet there? If we get lucky, we (Tucson folks) might be able to get to Anthem a little before 9. (Fingers crossed).

:eek: scared me when I read 9. If I remember there is the sign for the mall onin the parking lot. I think that would be the best spot. I think there are only a couple of HHRs from Phoenix going up Sat. morning with us. So we should have 4-5 HHRs making the trip in the morning.

Campfire ban lifted beginning July 14
Thanks to monsoon rains, campfires and charcoal grilling will again be allowed beginning Friday, July 14. Fires will still need to stay small and will not be allowed in windy conditions.
