View Full Version : A/C Went Out...Completely.

Coming back from a vendor yesterday the HHR's A/C just quit.

I stopped and checked all the fuses (good), and the relays (A/C Relay was very HOT!). Got back in and nuthin' - just very hot air.

Of course this has to happen on a 100-degree day here...

So I called my service advisor yesterday and set up an appointment. Took it in this am for:

1) Fix A/C

2) Fix A/C TSB (replace condenser lines - noise related)

3) Reflash ECU to most current release.

Figured while I have it in, might as well get it updated.

My service guy is very cool and love it whenever I come in to see him. they don't care about the intake, exhaust, lowering, etc. UNLESS - my problem is related to one of those things! Fortunately none have been.

Anyway, I should know later this afternoon what the scoop is and will post more then. Things happen...

Yikes!!! :scared: In 100 degree weather to boot.

Looking forward to hearing what they have to say. No noise or warning before it went out?

Guess I'm really lucky that I haven't had any major issues with mine. Only service related thing I've had done was having the running boards installed, rear hatch check for clicking noise which ended up being normal actuator noise and having computer reprogrammed when I got 6 disc player from Toyko.

Might have a leak in the system. Once it gets too low the A/C clutch will not engage. Hope they fix it fast for you Mike. Man shes hot down there. It's only 23 C here and rain. Darn Canadian springs or should I say Summer. First day of summer.

Poor SoCal folks - you're already hittin' 100?

It's only gotten to 113 (which it will today, as well!) here in AZ - a few times so far. I'm sure it will get HOTTER, though, as the summer progresses. As long as it doesn't get back up to 122  like it did a few years back, I think I'll be all right. (As I posted before - 122 - yes, degrees, and yes, fahrenheit!) :scared:

UPDATE: Seems I picked up a rock (EDIT: a pebble!), and took out the whole condenser unit. Should have known better and installed a lower grille (I have plenty here!)

Anyway, GM wants $800 to fix it. I told them to order the parts but I'm not paying. they gave me the good 'ol 800 number to call.

I'm going to call and tell them about the others here who have had the same thing happen, and demand they fix it as a design flaw - all they needed to do was put a screen there to protect the condenser. It's foolish to think all these HHR's are going to have the A/C taken out by even small road debris!

If they say no...anyone up for a Class Action Suit?

PM me to sign up...!

Well...that sucks Mike. I'd be happy to help on the class action suit...but I have one of your lower grilles on my HHR.

Good luck fighting with GM on this issue. Hope all goes your way and you get them to cover it under warranty. I'm sure owning a business that deals with HHR's just might help you. It's definitely a design flaw leaving that area wide open, inviting things to fly through the gaping hole.

As said by SoCal himself....Hi Mike, the fitment problem we had was mainly with the Classic Billet Upper Grilles. Even our latest delivery (which was supposed to be "corrected" grilles), fit very poorly.

The 120 Wire Mesh Grilles fit fine - but they can't seem to make them fast enough to keep any in stock. (They have to be sent out for plating, and that takes extra time).

The Lower Classic Billet grilles fit fine, but again, they can't provide us with enough product to keep them in stock.

I like to provide a good quality product that fits properly out of the box, from a company that will meet my quantity demands. It's no fun spending hours updating websites with "in stock...out of stock." If you notice, most other online shops always say "in stock" - even if it's not! They would rather take your money and deal with getting you the product later...(when you start complaining!)

I don't like to do business that way. I want to be known for good products, fast shipping, and great customer service. It doesn't always work out that way, but it's something to strive for! :thumb:

Man.. This is kind of timely. I used the Mr. Bumpstops method for mounting some heavy duty gutter guard for my "lower grill". The guy next door does guttering and roofing and just came over with a 35" piece they had left over from a job. It fits perfectly after cutting down to 32", securing with a couple nuts and washers to the stock bolts up front, and enough to wrap around the lower part of the bumper for a nice tight fit. Since I had the washers and nuts, total cost of $0.00. The protection it will give: priceless.

Did you use anything to cover the outside edges of the screen, so it won't scratch?

Here's why I didn't have one on: I don't care for the look of the PB lower grille with my upper grille, and was planning on installing a Mr. Bumpstops Economy model lower grille. Sindy sent me one and I've had it here for a few weeks.

I was (and am still), planning on taking it to the vendor who will be making custom grilles for us to see about getting them made as a "house grille" for SoCalHHR's. Of course, the whole time it's been on the bench in the shop, and everytime I walk by it screams "hey! Put me on!" - but I'm always too busy and also needed it "off" to give the grille guy for a template. In the meanwhile you see what happens...

There is nothing wrong with the PB lower grilles, they go on in a snap and we have had zero fitment issues. However, I recently decided not to carry their products as the UPPER grille has been the source of many, many headaches for me. (If you ONLY knew! )

And yes, if I was a capitalist, I'd certainly still be selling them - especially with my latest post! But as you can see, some things are more important to me than "sales" - like providing a quality product from a company I can trust.

As far as the "Class Action Suit" - if I have to pay $800 to get my air fixed on a car thats 6-months old, that's too bad. HOWEVER - this is becoming a recurring problem (we have had reports from at least 4 people on this already), so it's starting to smack of "design flaw."

On the way to the dealer to pick up my HHR earlier, I looked at every oncoming car on the road - ALL had protection where the lower vent area is. Even at the dealer, the Service Manager mentioned that it is not a problem on other GM cars, and they don't have mesh - just then I turned to the Corvette right next to me and pointed at the factory MESH behind the large gaping hole below the bumper...(uh, yeah - ooops!)

It would be more important for me, as an HHR owner and a member of this community, to be able to set a precedent that GM would admit it is a design problem and offer to retrofit a solution and pay for any damages incurred to the condenser. It is a first year model car and there are bound to be some problems that arise - they need to step up to the plate and fix the problem - the condenser is not protected from daily road hazards. A dent on my bumper or scratch on a headlight from a stray rock is acceptable from daily driving - losing my air conditioning is NOT!

End of rant.

I'll let you all know what the GM Regional Rep says.
I'm speaking with him in the morning...

Did you use anything to cover the outside edges of the screen, so it won't scratch?

Nope. The only thing it could scratch is the inside of the bumper which will never see the light of day anyway. It's already trimmed on top and bottom with a metal strip, so only the sides are raw mesh. These were folded at the ends so there were no sharp edges.

SoCalHHR
06-21-2006, 09:59 PM
It never sounds good when people say "good luck!'

Thinking about it more. If I pay $800 and have my condenser replaced, what's going to happen next week when I'm driving the same stretch of road and hit another rock? I'll have to pay another $800 - that's what!

This will be a recurring problem for HHR owners everywhere if it is not addressed by GM now.

Observations;

I just went for a walk in our parking lot to see what other cars have for a grill covering that coil, and I was surprised at what I saw. Many makes do not really have any substantive grill there either - examples I saw are Honda Accord, Mitsubishi SUV, Toyota Avalon, others. They were basically open to rocks except for a thin horizontal strip and several vertical strips, certainly nothing that would block rocks at all. So I am now seeing that the A/C coil on other makes is very wide open also.

Opinions???

P.S. I'm still going to put a grill there, I'm just wondering why the industry has so many makes with the coil so exposed?

Well, I finally feel compelled to put my two cents in on this thread:
The 'industry' as a whole (Chevy, Honda, etc.) does not put a grille there because it's cheaper for them not to do so. The number of complaints/repairs/warranty work that actually gets approved is way less than the cost of putting a grille on every vehicle. While I am by no means supporting the 'industry', I am also trying very hard not to take sides. I support my HHR BretHHRen first and foremost, but I have also seen the other side of the story:
In my previous life, I worked for a retailer for 15 years. People brought in products all the time because, in their opinion, they were flawed or did not last as long as they thought they should. Our policy consisted of sending the product back to the manufacturer and have them evaluate it. Sometimes the customer got a new product, other times the manufacturer deemed that the product had performed as designed, and sent the used product back. This process was handled on a case-by-case basis. The majority of times, though, the customer simply felt that they were entitled to more, because they paid good money and felt (again, in their opinion) that they deserved more.
While in SoCal's opinion (and many others, I assume), this is a design flaw, I seriously doubt that Chevy/GM will see it the same way. This is because they would have to admit a mistake on their behalf, would have to perform a recall of some sort, and provide a grille (or some other product that would do a grille's job adequately) to EVERYONE that has purchased an HHR thus far. Think this will happen? Sorry, but not in our lifetime. This is because rocks hitting the condenser or radiator WILL cause SOME problems, but it will be cheaper for Chevy/GM to address such issues on a case-by-case basis, since this will not occur to every HHR on the road.
I wish Mike the best of luck, and hopefully he's one of the lucky ones that will get the work done on GM's account, but I also wouldn't hold my breath on it. My prediction is that they will meet halfway somehow, and Mike will have to shell out some money for the repair. Good Luck!
That's my :2cents:

Anyone (Mike) know where this could be had??

Here's an assortment of your 'typcial' grill mesh's... there's better out there (more $$$) and there's worse. :thumb:

Size of damage (compared to Quarter):

As you can see, the damage was cause by a pebble smaller than a dime.

Better get some protection on there quick! You're next.

(Still no word on whether they will cover it.)

I'll keep you posted...

Mike, I been reading this post very carefully and I think I will call my dealer tomorrow and the salesman I know and see if they have had any problems with this.

Mike, I hope that you get this resolved quick and satifactorally. If every one would present this to their Chevy rep. Maybe something can be done for this problem in the future.

Oh yeah, - that sucked BIG time! It took me 2-1/2 hours just to get back from Chino yesterday! There was also another fire in the hills of Pomona at the same time. I saw 4 helo's and 1 fixed wing dumping on it.

Today, just getting down to Rancho Calif. Rd. was a nightmare; all southbound lanes were backed up due to a fire in south . DIC reading 215 engine, 108 person.

UPDATE: I'm cool again. New condenser, new lines (per the TSB fix), and fresh R134 blowin' chilly-willy silly on me! I printed out the GM-Parts Direct pricing on the condenser and my dealer matched it (saved me $70), and only had to pay R&R labor on the condenser, everything else was warranty work.

Still, I'm out a WAD of cash!

Time to go install my Mr. Bumpstops lower grille now...

Help me understand this. How could any of that repair have cost you anything out of pocket? Is there no warranty on it? I'm thinking about buying an HHR but if GM quality leaves you with hot air...I don't know.

I understand why "road damage" wouldn't be covered, but shouldn't the comp. on your auto insur. have covered it, just like it would a windsheild?

We've got a $100 deductable just for this reason.

Yes, this could be covered by a persons automobile insurance. However, many peoply carry deductibles higher than $100. I carry $500 deductible on both comprehensive and collision, as I'm sure Mike probably does at well. This keeps the insurance rates at a reasonable level for me here in Denver, where insurance rates are much higher, as I'm sure they are in California as well. I personally carry the higher deductibles to cover catastrophic losses rather than what I consider nickel and dime stuff. Don't get me wrong...I'm not made out of money by any means, I'm just willing to roll the dice.

I was in the insurance business for nearly 15 years, 8 of those as an Office Manager for an American Family agent and 5 of those being a Commercial Automobile Insurance Underwriter. Having said that, I can tell you that many people elected to carry lower comprehensive deductibles like you stated above and for the same reason. From personal experience, in both the Personal & Commercial side of the business, I saw many times where insurance was cancelled or non-renewed due to excessive comprehensive insurance claims or what some in the industry call "nuisance claims". While I don't necessarily agree with this practice, it happens...and a lot more than people realize.

Ya might wanna check with your agent......ours had $500/500 also, talked to our agent and for about $50/6 mon. we were able to drop ours to 100/250.

Considering HHR's windshields are getting a bad rap and after what happend to Mike, that's not much. $900...wow, more than I want to do in one pop!

If either happens we won't be out $900! It would take 9 years of the higher payment to get there so it was a no-brainer fo us. We've got State Farm btw.

My dealer threw in an insurance deductible waiver for collison and comp up to $500, when I bought my HHR. After a claim and repair, for $59.95 I can buy the waiver again and so on after each repair claim. Catch is of course that I have to bring it to the dealer for the repairs and for sure the insurance company is paying for it but at least I am not and the most I will be out of pocket is the $59.95 if and when I ever need an insurance repair done. :thumb:
