View Full Version : boost
ecopower02 06-29-2006, 03:29 PM i am new to HHR's and to the site(so go easy on me  )
but what i have been reading looks like there is no room for the 2.2l ecotec GM S/C? i have a j-body with a ecotec engine and i love it. but it is getting alot of miles on it, and i was thinking of getting a HHR but i would like to boost it also.
if anyone can help me on this it would be great..
and i also see there is no header for the HHR is that correct?
on my j-body i have KN short ram air intake, and a fully exhuast. and would like to do the same if i get a HHR/ with a S/C ofcourse
thanks all.
captain howdy 06-29-2006, 03:41 PM There is no factory 2.2 S/C engine, it's a 2.0. ;) According to one of our members who measured up the 2.0 S/C engine it should just drop in the HHR. Of course the HHR has a header, do you mean an aftermarket header?

yes after market i'm sorry i didn't add more information in.
i know there is a 2.2l ecotec GM SC kit out, but was wondering if it would work on the HHR.
en0oNmAI 06-29-2006, 06:55 PM Hahn Racecraft have a bolt on turbo kit for 2.2L Ecotecs.
ecopower02 06-29-2006, 10:46 PM yes hahn racecraft does make a ecotec turbo kit for the j-body ecotecs, but i don't think it will work with the HHR (i could be wrong) but i am asking if the GM SC for the 2.2l ecotec would work on the HHR.
i don't know much about the newer ecotec engines, i think they have a different throttle control. again i'm not sure.
i am just wondering if anyone has looked into or ask if the GM SC for the 2.2l ecotec (which was made for the j-bodys) would work on the HHR.
captain howdy 06-29-2006, 10:58 PM hvrod has something in mind. But he's all secret agent until his mods are complete.
Black Beauty 06-29-2006, 11:00 PM I have the GM Sport Compact Performance Build Book #88958646 that gives you all the how to`s, but only for the motor. the computer and tuning will have to be done at the dealer, with no real mention of the HHR motor . Book was $16.19 w/tax at local dealer. check GM perf. Web site for nearest dealer and see if you can get over the counter.
ecopower02 06-30-2006, 10:23 AM yeah i have the ecotec build book. thank you all.
-md- HHR 06-30-2006, 10:40 AM Looked into it. I think there will be an interference with the radiator. :(
Dealer said they could reprogram the stock 5 speed HHR with a boosted 5 speed cobalt flash. But they said it has never been done.
And it will work in theory.
txsman2930 06-30-2006, 11:48 AM ooooh...That word "Theory" can be a nasty word at times in the automotive industry. Theory is sometimes followed by KAAABOOOOOOMM!!

Think I'd wait until that theory has been put into practice on another HHR or 10. Don't need mine going KAAABOOOOOOMM!! :scared:
DesiredCustoms 07-05-2006, 08:43 AM We are in the middle of doing the 2.2 ecotec supercharger kit on my hhr 2006.
the supercharger is on the car and evreything is functional other then a/c lines had to be moved for the system to fit into the car
as well the oil dipstick needed to be remade to get out of the way
we are waiting on GM headoffice to make a VCI # for the HHR so we can get this vehicle reprogrammed and see how she runs.
the problem is HHR isnt on the list of compatible upgrades for this vehicle so i had to go back to my contacts that we are working on this project with and get some inside help and fasttrack a solution to get this vehicle on the road and running.
it will be a week or so till i get the recal done and this vehicle running properly but the the supercharger does fit, with no rad or interference from anything other then the a/c and oild dip stick. pipping needs to be done for intake system as well in which we are working on a total solution with GM to make this kit available for the HHR.

DesiredCustoms 07-10-2006, 08:30 AM just an update the 2.2 kit is not being very compatible with the HHR due to the ECM and PCM difference on the vehicles it was made for and the vehicle we are trying to put it on.
They are working for us right now, on creating an updated CAL or VCI so we can reprogram the darn thing and get it running.
tell you one thing, HHR pulls like crazy until it noticed eh something is wrong and goes into power reduce mode...
stay tuned.
thanks for all the compliments, cant wait to show you what we can do to this HHR
m0rie 07-10-2006, 11:00 AM Great! Can't wait to see what she'll do once you get the tuning figured out. Should be a real screamer.
trey1966 08-09-2006, 09:44 PM Any news on the project?
I am dying to find out when I can supercharge my Spring Edition.:D

Keith:
Thanks for the input. Let us know what you have in store for the 2.4L. I don't believe anyone who says it can not be s/c ed. All you need to do is lower the C/R to 8.5 or lower. no more then 4 to 6 psi boost and look out !!!
Instant Go. :D
Thanks again.

Keith,
I'm sure there will be a work around regarding the C/R. I belong to a Ford Focus forum and know lots of people who own them. They had a similar issue with the SVT Focus because of it's VVT on the intake cam as well as 10:1 (or so) C/R. But Jackson Racing came to the rescue with their S/C kit and now several of our members are driving around in SC'd SVT Focuses. So it can be sone. I too am waiting for someone to release a SC kit for the 2.4.

DesiredCustoms 08-14-2006, 08:15 AM hey everyone just an update the last month we have been waiting for GM to rebuild and get me a new VCI which is a vehicle calibration file.
there is nothing for the vehicle to change the settings in the computer. the kit was off the cavy and sunfire eco and they use a different style computer.
we have engineers working on this file, the vehicle pulls like crazy until it sees boost for more then 5 sec then goes into limp mode (engine power reduced)
but other then that the kit is on and you can drive it nicely just cant be hammering on it yet
shortly hopefully the new VCI will be ready and i can program the computer and get this thing fully boosting...
thanks again
trey1966 08-14-2006, 09:57 AM I am really looking forward to buying that kit and getting it installed. Nothing would please me more than a few pounds of boost.
