View Full Version : Outside Thermometer
TxSkyPilot 06-30-2006, 12:32 AM Occassionally, I notice my outside thermometer on the DIC seems to stick in place. It seems to stay on a certain temperature when I know that is not the correct temperature.
For example, today it was set on 81. I drove by a bank sign that showed the temperature to be 89.
Then something weird happened. I held down the DIC reset button and it immediately started climbing up to 91.
I parked and came back later and it stayed on 91. I tried to reset it again but nothing happened.
It seems to work fine sometimes and acts weird at other times. Anyone seen anything like this?
SIHHR 06-30-2006, 01:04 AM When you start the car and when you drive your always going to get a different temp. Plus the bank is not moving and is on higher elevation. So it would be slighly different in temp
GDZHHR 06-30-2006, 01:40 AM I've noticed similar behavior in mine.
txsman2930 06-30-2006, 09:13 AM Yes. The DIC thermometer isn't exactly the most accurate thing in the world. I don't pay much attention to it anymore.
ng8650 06-30-2006, 09:43 AM My DIC is always on target :thumb:

captain howdy 06-30-2006, 09:46 AM My DIC might not be 100% accurate but it knows when it's cold out.

Your a riot CH.....I always enjoy your humorous replies!!!!
TxSkyPilot 07-04-2006, 01:54 AM Does anyone know where the outside thermometer sensor is located?
I'm still having this problem but hate to go back to the service department right now. It seems to stick on a certain temperature and will not change. I wonder if something is blocking outside sensor.
courthousedeb 07-04-2006, 02:00 AM Reply from another thread. I used search term outside sensor.
Hope this is what you were needing TxSkyPilot.
i know exactly where it is
looking at the front of the car, behind the left or passenger front headlight on the wall behind it you will see a plug and a small attachment plugged on it and that is it.
how do i know?
in putting in the new foglights, i disconnected it to see if that was a cover and was for the fog lights and found out it was the temp sensor
you can reach it from the tire well
EZ4U2CHere 07-04-2006, 09:07 AM I don't think I've ever seen a temp gauge so inaccurate as the one in the HHR. It was about 98 here yesterday and my temp gauge said it was 122. The one in my truck is usually only off by 2 degrees at the most, and most of the time it is dead on.
courthousedeb 07-04-2006, 11:43 AM Could be a problem with the sensor. Mine has always been pretty accurate...generally within a degree or 2 of local temps. Might want to have the dealer take a look at it...but I would first check to make sure it has a snug connection...and if you haven't already done so, check all your fuses...both under the hood and in the panel to the right of the center console. Another idea might be to disconnect the battery as a last resort, which should cause it to reset when reconnected. Others might have ideas other than I suggested, as well.

It seems to me that I read somewhere on here or some other board that someone had the same problem (btw I have this problem also) and the dealer replaced the sensor and it did not fix the problem. On a second note I have not checked the fuses under the hood yet ( I know I am trying to get in the Record book for procrastination :p: ) Either way it is a good suggestion Deb..

:laughabov The guage should just get to a point where it just reads "HOT"
fenris222 07-12-2006, 08:35 AM I wonder if this is a "Spring Edition" problem, because all 3 owners are posting similar bugs. Mine works great. No problems at all.

Folks...the problem has been solved. Thank you for your words of wisdom Julian. Good answer.
Seriously...the bottom line is to take it to the dealer until the problem has been resolved. After all, it's a new car with a manufacturers warranty, so they are obligated to fix it. If the dealer you are taking it to cannot fix the problem, I myself would take it to another dealer and have it looked at. I'm sure some people at the dealerships think this is nitpicky and don't give a rats behind about fixing the problem, but you can bet if it was in their own car, they would take the time to figure it out.
ToddH 07-12-2006, 07:10 PM I have the same problem with mine. It read 75 when it was close to 100 last week. Everyone was complaining how hot it was here. I just told them my car says 75 so it is 75. I'm going to the dealer to have them look at it soon. i think it just gave up.
CruzHHR 07-13-2006, 03:49 PM Just noticed this on the way home from work. Close to 90 begrees here. Gauge reads 64. Thought I'd check forums and sure enough others experiencing same problem. Will this be my third dealership visit in 1 month? If anyone gets this fixed at your dealerships please post any fixes performed.
Over50 07-14-2006, 12:13 PM Now I know I have company with this problem, which has existed since I got the vehicle three months ago. Same symptom - the outside temp display has a mind of it's own, has remained stuck on one temperature, then works for a while, only to "stick" again. My dealer says he hasn't had other complaints. The problem is, the dealer can't replace anything until it happens while they have the car...which means I could have my vehicle sitting in the repair lot for days and still not find what's wrong. I'm going to give the Chevy Customer Assistance "hot line" (1-800-222-1020) a shot and see what comes of it.
cj krause 07-14-2006, 01:26 PM its a pain in the butt but if you take the passenger front tire off, take off enough screws and bolts to loosen the tire well cover and get up under where u can get to the thermometer probe. just unplug it and clean it and plug it back in and it works fine from then on
that is what i did before the trip and i have had no more problems since. took about an hour to get it done.
dbarberaz 07-14-2006, 07:34 PM All I know is today mine is reading "TOOOOOOOO FREAKENNN HOTTTTTT"
BamaHHR 07-14-2006, 09:28 PM Mine is currently stuck on 79 (it was 102 today). I was told to take it in to be recalibrated.
cj krause 07-15-2006, 12:53 AM when i was in florida it would say 26 and possible ice. even went down to -28.
all you have to do is replug the wire back in where the probe is. it will fix all your problems
ToddH 07-22-2006, 11:05 AM I have my appointment Monday to get mine fixed on monday. The service department to will have to spend there own time to fix it. Plus I want them to take a look at a couple other things too.
burbhhr 07-23-2006, 11:56 PM my thermometer on the DIC seems to have been working fine... only had a couple issues while on trip to Palm Springs this weekend where high was 120 both Saturday and Sunday. One day it was stuck at 104 most the afternoon when it was at least 115 and then it just skyrocketed upward to 126!!!... we started cracking up and my wife took a pic of it...will post later if anybody cares... Did a lot of starting with remote start to get A/C cranked faster... just wondering if that might have something to do with inconsistincies.
'57HHR 07-28-2006, 09:07 PM Mine got "stuck" today. It's been reading 77 while the temp was 100 most of the day. My Silverado read 103.
I'm gonna check out the wheel pulling and check the sensor connection myself...last resort take it to the local dealer.
TomsHHR 07-29-2006, 06:07 PM Mine was working today.......

ToddH 07-31-2006, 02:02 PM Got it fixed, They just cleaned it up and it's working fine.
JJ_HHR 08-17-2007, 05:05 PM As long as my temperature never shows HELL... I'll be happy with it. So far it seems to reasonably accurate.

tracyboy 08-17-2007, 06:30 PM Had mine sensor replaced at the dealer they said it had an "open" but I still have the same sticking on one temp and off by 25 degrees so the next thing to replace is the bcm. Its going back to the dealer monday and to have this foam at the bottom of windshild put back down its coming up and it covers the vin plate cant see the vin this is twice now that this foam is coming out.
