View Full Version : Went to track with my tune only SS
Jaxon 04-21-2010, 02:10 PM So last night I took my car to the local strip to get some runs in. Last year on a worse tune I ran 14.099@103.75 with a 2.468 in the 60'. Last night my first run of the night after driving around all day and making a 1hr trip to the track, got there and got right into the staging lanes. First pass I made was a 13.772@103.99 with a 2.228 60'. That was with a slight throttle closing on the 1-2 shift. Kept having the problem with the throttle shutting when trying to NLS 1-2. The last pass of the night I ran a 13.664@105.05 with a 2.242 60'.
My car is 100% bone stock down to the paper air filter and tires with 29000mi other than a tune by BYT. Not too bad. Next time I go I might have mods along with some footballs in the rear to help not transfer weight.
Those are great times. Congrats!
Where you at Gateway Test n Tune?
How many cars last night? How many passes did you make?
How consistent is the car? I am interested inn doing bracket racing with mine.
THANKS!
Geoff 04-21-2010, 10:06 PM Nice times Jaxon, What was your 1/8 times and mph?

Yeah, I was at the test and tune, I don't really know how many cars were there but I made 6 passes. I wouldn't say my car is too consistent but I've only been to gateway a few times. My 1/8mi times were around 9 and my best was 8.997 IIRC. I was having an issue with the throttle closing on the 1-2 shift. Happened even on the 13.77 pass so I know theres a bit left in it.
Geoff 04-22-2010, 07:25 PM What MPH were you running in the 1/8?
damronjr 04-22-2010, 11:06 PM Wow, I haven't been able to break into the 8's yet, pulled a 9.15 as my best so far, but mine is also AT.
Jaxon 04-23-2010, 01:38 AM honestly I'd probally be faster in the 1/8th with an auto, no shock to the tires. It was my only run in the 8s but it'll only get faster. I have a meth kit and stage sensors but I need a downpipe and tires before either of those are installed.
BlackScreaminMachine 06-09-2010, 09:37 AM Good Runs, sounds like either the weather improved or you got better at driving. I would be interested in welding in some Helm Joints and putting in a temperory solid strut/bar, to preload the rear to now allow for weight xfer. (track only stuff). I was looking at the rear and I think its def possible.
Jaxon 06-09-2010, 11:49 AM people have been putting in peewee sized footballs in the rear springs as cheap airbags. my tune is a little better than it was before and I've got a catless downpipe on the way. weather is a little worse but I hope to gain some more time, ill drive a little better and won't continue trying to nls 1-2, just kept bogging out on me. ill have some footballs, little more tuning, and maybe my downpipe if it comes in before this upcoming tuesday. my friend has a tuned staged cobalt with intake and catback that ran a 13.18 on all seasons a week ago. he's going back with full bolt ons and nitto drs thursday to get his 12. said he's shooting for 11s by the end of the season :)
IgottaWoody 06-09-2010, 11:56 PM Airbags - early 80's Cavalier work great.......don't even have to remove springs to install them........
Jaxon 06-10-2010, 12:14 AM dont have to remove the springs for peewee footballs either. Easy to find and cheap. :)
BlackScreaminMachine 06-10-2010, 08:48 AM Thank god FWD cars do not have to deal with RWD issues as with just stuffing mini foot balls or air bags in there. If we run a air bag, pressure is important, as well as tire pressue and suspension preloads.
Jaxon 06-10-2010, 11:36 AM Yes I know, I had a 96 full bolt on cobra with a built rear end full suspension and whatnot, FWD has to deal with no traction, broken halfshafts, or broken trans.

Amen Brother.
HHRSSouth 06-11-2010, 11:58 PM Broken trans seems the new trend of the week, 2 people this week with cobalt ss/tc's lost 2nd gear. One heavily modified, the other mildly.
Jaxon 06-12-2010, 10:03 PM Are they LSD or non LSD? Seems like alot of the non-LSD trans have broken. I dont think my car has enough power to break the trans. I am going to the track again on tuesday but will still be stock with tune and a k&n drop in and some used dunlop dsst 245/40s that spin just as easy as the stockers lol.
HHRSSouth 06-13-2010, 10:12 AM LSD, but a lot of people are saying to check the roll pin first. That they fixed the roll pin and it fixed the problem.
Jaxon 06-13-2010, 08:31 PM so not actually a broken trans then? I was expecting grenaded transmissions like a few have done.
HHRSSouth 06-13-2010, 09:15 PM Well this morning a guy over on the cobalt forums said 5th gear grenaded, said he even had a hole in the trans. Get this he only has 2k miles on the car and said he barely ever gets into 5th because he lives in a major city so all of his driving is 1-4.
Jaxon 06-13-2010, 10:22 PM Wow that sucks. I dont read the cobalt forums much except the parts, not enough time to follow a busy national forum.
