****UPDATE****
The Coast Run is on! Below is a summary so you won't have to read through all of the pages...

DATES - September 8-10 (Actual Run up the coast is Saturday, Sept 9)
PLACE - Starting at San Simeon, CA. Going to Monterey, CA and back.
HOTEL - Courtesy Inn of San Simeon. (http://www.courtesyinns.com) 1-800-555-5773
RATE - $59/night. Say you are with the HHR group and we have rooms blocked to get the rate. Ask for Manesh.
FRIDAY DINNER - CAMBRIA, Main Street Grille, 7:30PM
SATURDAY LUNCH - MONTEREY, Bubba Gump's at The Cannery. Noon
SATURDAY DINNER - SAN SIMEON, Pacific Blue Bar & Grill, 7:30PM
SUNDAY - At leisure. We like to take a group for breakfast over the water in Morro Bay. Some may prefer Hearst Castle Tours. Depart for home any time.

It's always fun to set uo convoys on the way to a Run. Post here for possible convoy information. We'll be leaving Bakersfield about 4PM Friday afternoon. If anyone from the South wants to meet us on I-5, let us know. If North Central folks want to meet at James Dean Memorial, let us know. Other convoys?

------------------

I do a thing every year called the California Coast Run for my Fiero hobby. We are planning the 4th annual event right now. The run starts in San Simeon and we go up somewhere around Carmel/Monterey for lunch and then back down the coast for a dinner/raffle that night.

I was thinking about seeing if anyone wanted to do something similar for the HHRs. I just noticed that there is a plan for northern folks to come to Monterey in August... I'll throw this out there anyway and see if anyone is interested...

I have an agreement with a hotel in San Simeon for $59/night rooms for any of my events. The hotel is 3 miles south of Hearst Castle, about 7 miles north of Cambria, and about 20 miles north of Morro Bay.

We generally have convoys from different areas arriving in San Simeon on Friday night. There is a great BBQ place in Cambria where we have ribs that evening. We leave on the Run around 8AM and that puts us on the northern end around 11:30 where we meet up with Northern people for lunch. (Gump's is the best food up there in my opinion but they are hard on accepting groups.)

We generally leave around 1PM heading back and have stops at the Big Sur River Inn which is beautiful, and one more stop at the sea lion preserve. We get back to the hotel around 5PM. That gives everyone time to relax for a bit before we have dinner at 7PM followed by the raffle. I have had great luck over the past 4 years getting Fiero vendors involved. For the last two years I have had luck with others such as K&N, Addco, Hemmings, Summit, etc... All proceeds from the raffle go to St Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

Sunday morning we usually do Hearst Castle tours for anyone who is interested, followed by breakfast on the water in Morro Bay before the convoys heading out for the trip back home.

If anyone is interested in doing this, I will be happy to make all the preparations. I was thinking sometime in August/September. The drive up the coast on Highway 1 is about the most beautiful scenery in CA in my opinion. The trip is about 100 miles each way if you are going to Carmel. A bit more to Monterey.

Anyone interested or is this too close to the Northern Monterey run?

Not sure if you're aware of a run to Monterey in Aug is planned. If you would plan for late Sept you'll probably get more rides.

Yeah, I said in the original post that I knew they were planning a Monterey meet in August and if it didn't clash I would do this one. The one in August, in my opinion, is more for Northern folks and since it is just a one day thing would be almost impossible for people from Southern CA to go all the way there and back in one day. That is why I always make mine a weekend. And the main draw is the drive anyway. Highway 1 is the place to drive in CA in my opinion. Since I have a relationship with a hotel that gives me $59/night all the time. I try to use it often.

It looks like there are plenty of people interested in the weekend trip, and I hope that the people in the North who may not come to San Simeon on Friday will at least meet us for lunch in Monterey.

As far as when in September, I am completely open. Maybe I should do a poll to see when the most people would be able to make it.

If anyone feels this will take away from the August meet, I will drop it. Let me know...

Not a problem. Some may be staying in the Monterey area overnight. Some need to make it a 1 day thingie.

I love the Hwy 1 drive. I drove it to the Solvang Run back in May. It's purrttie! :D

If you set a Sept run towards the end of the month, many may join you. Esp. those that would like to meet in Monterey again.

You''ll have no comments for a week easily on these 'runs.'
The ones that are getting the most comments are the ones who do planning of it on the site. ie. "What do you want to do?" Reply, "I don't know, how about you."

With mine I just asked where and gave 2 choices. Then I set the schedule as it was just easier. Also, we would like to do some planning at this one to make plan for the future and exchange emails, etc.

We'll do the Mosdesto one in Oct or so I believe, if you can't make the Monterey with us in Aug, why not meet us in Mo-town?!

I understand. I am on my 4th Coast Run on this side of the country and put on about three times that many when I was in TN. I know that people are sometimes slow about responding. I guess what made me think no one was interested was the 60-some views of the poll about best dates and no responses or votes. It wasn't really this thread I was worried about. So I figured it was just too soon. No problem. If the few who responded want to go, we will go. I can get the same rate at the hotel year round for 1 or 61.

As for the Northern Monterey run... We won't be able to go that weekend. And honestly, from here, that is about the most boring drive I could imagine. It will be fun once you get to the coast but the trip from here to Santa Nella and from Santa Nella on is not very much to me. If I was going to attend I would just have to meet you in Monterey. I would still go over to San Simeon and spend the night and drive the coast.

I am interested in helping with future planning if my input is desired. Cars are my biggest hobby, and getting people together to enjoy common loves is a great thing. I'll watch for more info on Modesto.

As far as your dinner plans at Gumps... Great place and wonderful food, but have you talked to them about getting a group in? I tried it last year. They wanted me to make a big deposit and make us eat from a limited menu. If you just try to walk in with a group they act like you are putting them out. We went in for a late lunch with a group of 10 people back in January and they acted like we were putting them out. We ended up with part of our group having to wait for another table across the restaurant. And that was lunch. Dinner on Saturday night will be even worse, especially since it will be late summer and the weather will be nice. You may have already worked all of that out but that is just my experience with Gumps and groups.

But thanks for sharing your thoughts with me, both here and in the PM. Like I said, I definitely will volunteer to help put together anything in the future if my help is wanted.

Thanks,
Dale

Voted for Sept 8-10 on the poll. For me the 3rd is out - Fontana NASCAR weekend and the 17th I race my R/C car...race #7 in a nine race series. Could most likely do the last two weekends of the month...I'll keep an eye on this thread to see what happens. That is a beautiful drive!

The closer the date of our run, the more interest there is being shown and I'm glad because it had been pretty slow, but even if just a couple of guys show, I am planning on having a blast. I am still chasing sponsors for the trophies and door prizes, so even if we have a small showing I ain't losing a lot of money and I finally get to meet some of the forum members. Next year I hope that next year I get to meet a lot of the west coast members in either the run to Colorado or a trip back to California...then you guys could paln a run up Highway 1 !!!

Okay... Arrangements are made with the Courtesy Inn of San Simeon for the weekend of September 8-10. We get a room rate of $59/night.

The Courtesy Inn website is http://www.courtesyinns.com/
Their toll-free number is 1-800-555-5773

I normally tell people to talk to the owner/manager whose name is Manesh. He is generally in the office from about 9-5 Monday thru Saturday. Of course, you can call anytime. You can either tell the desk person that you are with the HHR group and we have rooms blocked, or you can leave a message and Manesh will call you back.

I have been asked about cancellations in case something comes up. These people are really great to deal with and as long as you call and cancel the room and don't just leave them hanging there won't be any penalty.

If anyone wants to come up our way, we will be leaving here about 4:00 on Friday afternoon. We'll go up the 5 to Hwy 46 and then across to Paso Robles. We generally stop at the James Dean Memorial at the place where he was killed. Then on across the mountains to Hwy 1 and up to San Simeon. If you like good BBQ ribs, we can go to the Main Street Grill in Cambria on Friday night.

Looking forward to meeting some of you!

I can put together some goodies bags with some stuff from my other events. I don't know HHR vendors all that well, but if anyone wants to donate for a raffle, etc, we can sure do it. The proceeds from the raffle at the Fiero event go to St Judes. If we do something similar, we can pick a charity or donate to the forum or whatever. I'll try to throw a couple of T-shirt designs together.

I can do that! Can't go wrong with any HHR. They are all good lookin!

Last year for the Fiero run I did an 'official shirt' with the run logo which featured a car that I did in Photoshop. I also offered to put anyone's car on a shirt with the same logo but in place of the Photoshop car. It was pretty popular.

Anyone is welcome no matter what they drive. I think YOU will have more fun if you bring the HHR, although I think other people might enjoy seeing the SSR. I base this on the fact that I drove my wife's Miata on the Fiero run last year and it was not very fun. Partly because the Miata is not near the car a Fiero GT is, but mostly because I was just not part of the group. Of course, I got lots of flack from everyone considering that I am the host of the Run and didn't even bring my car!

Even though the Fiero run that I call the California Coast Run is geared mainly at Fieros, we have had plenty of other cars attend every year. It is for people who like Fieros, whether they own one of not. Last year we had 35 Fieros, our Miata, a Honda Accord, a Cadillac, and a Ford Explorer. This year is shaping up to be the biggest yet even though gas prices are outrageous, and everyone here is invited to that one too...

The little woman and I would like to come... We have questions.
1.Anyone have any idea how long it would take from Modesto?
2.What time Saturday morning we leaving fer Monterey?

Songman
07-21-2006, 12:40 PM
Modesto to San Simeon is about 4 hours. You'd want to come down the 5 and hit Hwy 41 just south of Avenal (Exit 309). That would bring you over to Hwy 46 for our meet at the James Dean Memorial. We'll be leaving Bakersfield around 4PM so we would be at James Dean about 5:20. It would take you a bit over 3 hours to get to James Dean from Modesto. There are possibly some others from around Fresno who might be coming who would want to meet you along the way.

We leave the hotel around 8AM to head north up the coast for Monterey. That gives us plenty of time to stop and enjoy the scenery and take pictures. It also allows for motor homes and other things that slow you down along the way. That puts us into Monterey just in time for lunch.

Lee, there is San Simeon State Park just a few miles down the road if you wanted to camp. I don't know if you have the HHR ready to be towed or not. The state park is nice and they do have campsites but by the time you pay your site fee and hookup fees you are already at the good room rate that we have at the hotel.

As I mentioned earlier, lunch for a group at Gump's is often a hassle. Depending on how many people attend, we may have to get several tables instead of just one big one. We'll probably have a bit of a wait at lunch but there are lots of shops around to keep everyone busy.

Our HRR is going to be at the dealership for the 2 weeks we are gone... Getting the Prestige package done (Super Detail in and out) plus anything else I can think of to have them do... We only have 800 miles on her and she is not ready to tow behind the Motor Home YET....

I've got to go to Washington on Aug 9, three days after we get back from Vegas. Mine is just a there and back trip though to pick up my Ferrari kit car that is having work done on it. I won't be taking the HHR either since I doubt that it is rated to pull that much weight. I only have to go to Vancouver, just across the border from Portland, OR, but I hope it is not raining up there then. As much as I love rai, I don't want to be hauling my car in bad weather.

You made me think of something.. I am supposed to be getting some sort of detail package in the mail because of the extra warranty I bought. I need to call the dealership tomorrow and follow up on that.

I called today to let Manesh know that several people had been trying to call but not getting calls back. I was told by has father that he was out of town and will be in tomorrow.

Can we get a quite head count of who is coming? Followed by whether or not you have made your reservations already... I want to make sure that everyone is getting in under the group rate...

I'll start.

1. Songman and Rie - Reservations made.
2. HHR PNOY - Reservations pending.

No ampersand on plates from the DMV, so it's ANR.

Albane & Randy

Going up on the 8th, will try to work a convoy out with ivtech and hhr pnoy...have to check drive time.

No fair, you all have your plates, we have to wait six months. We'll be the white HHR - that's not Sindy!

Songman
07-26-2006, 09:33 PM
We haven't even ordered Marie's plates yet... Worrying more about the other stuff first...

If you Southern folks want to come up over the Grapevine you can meet me on the 5 and we'll shoot across 46 and pick up the north central valley folks at James Dean and then on across the mountains. From Pasadena, Mapquest shows that to be the best way anyway. Same with La Crescenta. Depends on where in Los Angeles HHR PNOY is. The only other factor would be time. We won't be leaving here till around 4PM on Friday. That puts us into San Simeon around 7PM just in time for dinner. I don't know what each of your schedules is...

Way to go, Sindy! I'm glad Manesh finally got back to work!

I just got an e-mail from one of my Solstice buddies (I used to be involved with them and help them set up their club and events) and he was inviting me to their next Run in Monterey Sept 8-10. I told him about our run and said 'maybe we'll see you on the road.'

He sent me a link to what they are doing. There is a big car show at Leguna Seca that weekend and they are all going there. The event is called Cherrys Jubilee. This show includes classic cars, motorcycles, and special interest cars. We will undoubtedly see some cars running around town. I have looked at their website (http://www.cherrysjubilee.org/) to try to figure out if this is going to make Monterey too crowded to get into and it is kinda hard to say. There is no actual schedule of events on their site.

As long as we can find parking this may even make the Run better! I always like seeing hot cars. I just wanted everyone to know that we might be expecting some traffic up on that end getting into Monterey.

I've been to Columbia. A buddy of mine down there has a really nice turbocharged Fiero. The first time I was ever down there was in the late-70s or early 80s. They had cleaned up an old landfill and made an outdoor music park there. There was a three day festival going on. I was traveling with Merle Haggard then and he was the closer.

We'll probably be moving back to my North GA home in a year of two. I still come to Nashville pretty often to keep all of my music contacts alive. I normally fly though so wouldn't have the HHR. Still would love to meet some owners there though. I'll wtch your Natchez run thread.

Hmmm... That is odd. I'll call over there today and see what made Alex think we still had rooms last night.

There is a Motel 6 down at the end of the same street that we have used for spillover in the past. It is an ex Holiday Inn so it is pretty nice. It is also the place where the restaurant and lounge is we will have dinner Saturday night. I called them and they do have rooms available. Friday night is $65.99 and Saturday night is 85.99 (plus tax). Of course, you can make a reservation at the Motel 6 for Friday night and then move to the Courtesy Inn for Saturday night if you want to get the cheaper rate.

The number for the Motel 6 is (805) 927-8691.

I'm planning on at least meeing up on Saturday - will look for you all in the Monterey area - and make the drive SOUTHBOUND on Hwy 1 back to San Simeon/Cayucos...

Plans are: Leave Kingsburg early A.M. on Saturday - west on Hwy 198 thru Coalinga to Hwy 101. North on 101 to Greenfield - then West on Monterey County Route G16 to Carmel. (G-16 is a DRIVERS road - nearly 50 miles of curves!) Then cap the drive off with 75 miles of Hwy 1...

(G-16 is so awesome - Piloti racing/driving Shoes even has a model named G-16.) http://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/files/1/5/4/6/images.jpg

Thats where 41 and 46 come together is it not? I will be coming down 41... Been through there a couple times but don't remember if there is a place to meet? I will look for your PM and I will return my number to you also.......

Yeah, Lee... The intersection of 41 and 46 is where James Dean was actually killed. You would merge right onto 46 West and about 300 yards down the road is a store/diner. The James Dean Memorial is in the parking lot. This is actually a town called Cholame but I have never seen anything around there but the store. I think the name of the place is the Jack Rabbit Diner or something like that.

According to GPS if I get on I-5 at Crows Landing Road at 3:30 and it is 119.4 miles to I-5 at Hiway 41 it should take me 1 hour and 40 minutes.... So that would put me there at 5:10 and that in turn would put me at Jacks Ranch at 5:49... That is if I drive exactlly at the speed that my GPS program wants me to drive..... That brings up an interesting note. There is hardly any cell service at all along the Run route. We normally take FRS radios to be able to talk between the cars. So far no one has ever needed a wrecker or AAA on any of my runs so we hope that trend continues. A few radios scattered through the ranks will be good just in case anyone has trouble. We have two. Anybody else have them?

Normally we all meet at the hotel and then caravan down to the restaurant. The Main Street Grill is a great BBQ place but it is sort of like a cafeteria. You go to the counter and order your food and then go find a table. If we are lucky we can get some of the tables against the window so we can all get together. Also, if the weather is nice they have an outside patio. One more thing.. They don't take plastic! Cash only.

For anyone who just wants to go straight there instead of to the hotel, they are located on the far north end of Cambria. There is a shell station just north of them and that is about it.

Any Idea how long lunch is going to run? (Just in case I'm running late...)

Also - any plans to drive out to Pacific Grove before heading back south on Hwy 1? Lots of great photo ops & parking out there & not too far from Bubbas...

Is the 17 mile drive part of the agenda?

Songman: did you get my PM w/ cell phone #?

Songman
09-06-2006, 12:23 PM
Hey Keith, I did get your cell number.. Thanks. I also have Lee's and rgr's. I will also post the radio channel as soon as I dig out my radios tonight or tomorrow. Of those that said they had radios, does everyone have sub-channels or do we need to stay on a main channel?

On the Fiero runs, we normally arrive for lunch between 11:30 and 12:00. Gump's may very well be busy that day so I really have no idea how long it might take. We normally try to head back south between 1:00 and 1:30 on the Fiero runs.

Optional runs such as 17 mile drive or Pacific Grove are up to those who show up. I don't know about Pacific Grove, but I do know that 17 Mile Drive is a toll road and speed limits and stops will make it take at least an hour.

It all comes down to whether or not we want to get back to the hotel before dark. Some people don't like driving in the dark, especially on a cliff where the next stop is the ocean a hundred feet down. Leaving at 1:30 normally puts us back at the hotel around 5:30-6:00 and it is starting to get pretty dark. Of course, one of our normal stops is the Big Sur River Inn. We usually spend an hour there at the nice shops and the beautiful river.

The last stop before the hotel is a sea lion habitat where they are usually laying out about 10 feet from where we are standing. That is usually 20-30 minutes but won't interest everyone probably. And if we do get back to the hotel before dark, there is a great place across the street to catch the sunset.

This is the place to have the discussion of all of the above. I am open to any of it and want the participants to decide. The idea here is enjoyment. Whatever we do is going to be great. If a decision is reached here before Friday that will be great. If not, we'll decide once we get there.

Kwhopper89
09-06-2006, 01:20 PM
Pacific Grove is free - head down by the lighthouse and then loop back to Hwy 1 on Hwy 68 out of Monterey - the 17 mile drive does have a cost and I would rather pass on that - just curious if I needed cash for the entry fee..

Regular Channel 7 on the radios seems to work OK. Some higher frequencies actually require a license from the FCC.

Lee - see you on the next run! Hope all works out well for you...

Here's a few items going on in the San Luis Obispo area this weekend:

Riding the groove
Canadian tunesmith Ray Bonneville doesn't need a rhythm section. He's a veritable one-man band of roots and country blues, with a percussive blues guitar style reminiscent of Dire Straits, John Lee Hooker, and Eric Clapton.
Cradling his almost-antique arch-top electric guitar, he dishes up a potent blues ****tail complete with footboard percussion and roots-influenced harmonica. Add in his smoky vocals and you've got a riveting performance style.
A bilingual native of Quebec and a Juno Award winner, Ray Bonneville has just moved to Austin, where he's already capturing the hearts of new fans.
The Hoot Road Show is bringing him to the intimate concert setting at the Coalesce Bookstore (845 Main St. in Morro Bay) on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15, available at Coalesce or by calling 772-2880.

"Wake up, wake up, you're sleeping the day away," sings The Western States Motel's Carl Jordan on his band's self-titled debut CD. With its lazy, strolling, pop-ish tunes, The Western States Motel creates the kind of music that gets stuck in your head. The group has created soundtracks for short films, backyard nature documentaries, and various camcorder retrospectives and recently completed the score for a short documentary about Johnny Cash's 1968 concert at Folsom Prison (on the Walk the Line special-edition DVD). Catch their show at Linnaea's Cafe (1110 Garden, SLO) Saturday, Sept. 9, at 8:30 p.m. Wake up and pass the hat!

An all-women quintet from the hills of San Francisco performs a local concert to celebrate the release of their new CD, Feet All Over the Floor. The Stairwell Sisters, a driving old-time string band, combines vocal prowess with skilled multi-instrumental chops and a great attitude. Get your feet all over the floor with them at the Red Barn Community Music Series on Friday, Sept. 8, at the Los Osos Community Center, 2180 Palisades Way. As usual for this popular concert series, a community potluck starts at 6 p.m., with music at 7 p.m. A $10 donation is requested.

Art Stuff:
Graphite express
Expressions Custom Picture Framing Studio and Gallery is pleased to present a rare showing of James Kelly's original female figure graphite drawings. The public is invited to attend an artist reception on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Expressions Gallery at 4090 Burton Dr. in Cambria.
The show will run through the end of October. Kelly works predominantly in oils, and many of his pieces end up as "finished" drawings, catching collectors' eyes with their simplicity and beauty. Kelly's graphites and oils hang in private collections around the world, and Expressions' feature is a rare showing of these masterful drawings. Info: 924-1900.

Transforming
"Transformations" are Polaroid transfers and digital transformations on paper and fabric by Karen Peterson. The show runs through Sept. 30. Peterson is opening her exhibit of digitally enhanced photographs and Polaroid emulsion transfers with a reception on Friday, Sept. 8, from 5-8 p.m. in the Gallery at Marina Square on the Embarcadero in Morro Bay. An award-winning artist for more than 15 years, Peterson lives in Morro Bay and exhibits her artwork in galleries and art associations throughout the Central Coast.
Her work generates a sense of old-world nostalgia. Pictured: "Gas Station in Bodie" (traditional darkroom photo, hand colored). Info: 772-1068.

Well, today is the day! Is everyone excited?!? Is everyone rushing to do last minute things as I am?

I've got my radios all charged up and we will set them to regular channel 7 as Keith suggested. That way even if people don't have sub-channels they can still talk to us.

We're leaving at 4PM and meeting a few people along the way. We should be arriving at the hotel around 6:30 or so. We'll go hang out around the indoor pool and look for people as we get ready to go to dinner around 7:30. In case someone doesn't find me, we always stay in room 241. It is the end room facing the ocean, upstairs on the northern side of the hotel. There will be a black HHR parked in front. ;)

I think someone from every group coming in has my cell number. If anyone else needs it, just PM me before 4PM today and I will send it to you.

Yep - that was me - I wasn't sure if you were part of the group - there were lots of lone HHR's sighted Saturday. Just before you passed me, my radar detector went nuts - when I saw it was a HHR that passed me I was hoping that you wouldn't get a ticket!!! After the alerts stopped - I picked up the speed and caught back up with you - right at the Hwy 198 offramp! Great pictures, Charles! Thanks for sharing...

I've got lots more too but they are huge so I have to go reduce them and make them web friendly for people that aren't on braodband.

Looks great - but you guys should delete the pics and start a new thread called "Coast Run Pics" - this way members won't have to wade through that whole post to find the pic pages.

Sounds like a good idea... I'll start the thread over in the Photo area. Thanks Mike.

Actually I meant here in the South Pacific area.

We usually start a new thread after the runs for pictures and run comments.

Just a tip to make it easier.

Oh well... At least you made me think... I still like it in the photo section in case anyone else wants to see. I never look at other regions to see if there are new run pictures posted.

Several people had asked me about doing a T-shirt for the Coast Run. Well, I finally got around to doing it. Because of the rules of this site I can't post a link to how to get one but if anyone is interested, please contact me privately and I will send you a link.

Also, If you will send me a good hi-res photo of your car from a similar angle, I will put your own car on the logo on any merchandise you want.

Here is an example of the black T-shirt.
