View Full Version : Ram Air from front Grille to front of CGS air filter
cj krause 07-08-2006, 11:46 AM i have a racing filter with a filtered 2.5 in hole on the end so i decided to make a ram air intake to the end of the filter. all the parts were less than $15 w the tax
trip to Autozone and here is what will work for me.
Inlet
1. drill a hole in a clamp and attach it to the side of the grille. put 1- 17505 2.5 to 2 in muffler adapter in the clamp.tighten adapter to clamp...
2. clamp 1- 96034 Mighty Flow preheater 15" expandable/bendable to 36" hose to adapter
3. run hose from the grille to the left and up the front to the end of the filter
4. clamp another 17505 adapter to hose
5. the 2.5 in adapter is a real snug fit in the end of the filter and vualaaaaaaaaaa... this was by far one of the easiest mods i have done
ram air intake to front of filter
pics and evaluation coming in less than an hour and then on to cheap lower grille mod that Sindy did next
courthousedeb 07-08-2006, 12:12 PM :birthday: I thought you were taking the day off CJ. Your mind just squirms like a toad and doesn't stop thinking mods for a moment, does it?
Looking forward to seeing pics, as the CGS is another mod I'd like to do to my HHR. We wait with baited breath...well, then again, maybe not...just remembered your answer to one of the questions on the survey I sent you.

Retroburban 07-08-2006, 03:54 PM Let us know how you made the grille insert, with pics please. I just noticed how accessible that radiator is! Wont take much abuse uncovered.

Looks good CJ
cj krause 07-08-2006, 04:33 PM on the add on air line
how much HP it adds, i doubt if it is 1 hp but can you tell a difference and especially at speeds how much better it is breathing and shifting now. 0 lag now at all speeds and on take off it is now totally fun. For $15
my right foot now has a much nicer home now
it all adds up to nicer longer scratches on take off and lil higher speeds when shifting and faster getting to shift
love it, love it. one happy foot and extremely happy owner. Shaggy is shaggin on down the road. hard to keep it below 80 now.
GDZHHR 07-09-2006, 05:32 PM I may be asking a lame question, but here it goes....
By going through the "top" of the filter to force in air, doesn't that by-pass the filter part of the filter?
I thought the air needed to enter through the side to filter out stuff ya don't want getting into your system.
cj krause 07-09-2006, 06:07 PM nope
this is a racing filter with air able to get in from top and sides both and both are filtered

In that case...way cool!
Thanks once again for the info and the how-to's on your mods!!

Is that the 3A racing filter?
cj krause 07-09-2006, 11:18 PM Is that the 3A racing filter?
yessiritie indeedie
bought it at a O Reilys on clearance. they dropped the whole line. My Cyclops exhaust tip is also from them as well.
courthousedeb 07-21-2006, 12:16 PM CJ...will this work with the filter that the CGS comes with, or do we need to buy the 3A Racing filter or something similar?
Don't have my CGS in hand yet...hence the reason for the question. :thumb:

Deb, we have a new "mod" that will be available through our site soon, that will allow owners to add the air duct system like CJ has. It is a special filter setup that actually improves the performance of the CGS system. The vehicle pulls harder and with automatics the shifts are firmer and harder - it almost chirps the tires in 3rd (with an auto!).
Look for it soon...;)

Is CJ getting any royalties out of this?
SoCalHHR 07-21-2006, 01:21 PM This is something we have been working on long before CJ started his mod.
It had involved a LOT of testing with several different variations.
(It does NOT include any form of "ram air" or fresh air tubing.)
More details as soon as the product arrives...

SIHHR 07-21-2006, 04:53 PM CJ you are very clever. I enjoy seeing your mod's. You never know what to expect when you post something.
