View Full Version : Anyone have afteremarket overhead DVD?
ngiovas 03-08-2006, 07:19 AM Has anyone installed a video screen or rear seat monitor in their HHR? I am seroiusly considering buying an HHR, but my wife wants me to install some form of rear seat video. I would really like to find something that would mount in the headrests.
I thought I saw some photos of an HHR at the auto show that had monitors in the headrests and they came from GM. Has anyone seen these? Do you know how much they cost?

1BadPig 03-08-2006, 08:56 AM I have the Kawasaki portable DVD player with 2 removable headrest mounted monitors from Target for about $250... did the Target credit card and got additional 10% off!
Lee3333 03-08-2006, 10:25 AM There is an aftermarket company that makes headrests with monitors and sells them for about $900 a pair. I saw thir grey and it perfectly matches my interior. The distance of the mounting posts in the same, but I did not check the shape to see if it would actually fit. But, I would be more inclined to get a portable DVD with a mounting strap for attaching it to the seat back. This way, you can bring it with you where ever you go (although it definitly lacks the status or classy look of the built in monitors).

Hey. I did the same thing. Gotta love Target. :thumb:
1BadPig 03-08-2006, 11:31 AM Of course you cut-up the card like I did, right? I did that with Home Depot for a major kitchen remodeling project!
txsman2930 03-08-2006, 11:39 AM No. I still have the card, but I don't keep it in my wallet. It's stashed way for "emergencies". This was definitely an "emergency" lol
cowboybornlate 03-08-2006, 01:28 PM I have to take my laptop with me pretty much everywhere I go. So it pretty well keeps the kids satisfied while riding. I also have the portable broadband card so they can cruise the internet while we cruise the freeway, also plays DVD's....

I have a portable player that straps to the seats. I really want something built into the vehicle. I would be willing to install them in the headrest myself, but I would have to figure out the dimensions to see if they would fit in the stock headrests.
SIHHR 03-08-2006, 07:16 PM I just did a custom PSP install. But its not on any headrests.

giant96 07-09-2006, 01:21 PM I was thinking of getting one installed. I dont want to spend a ton of $$ but I want one with decent quality. Any thoughts and opinions would be apreciated. I would like one with a built in DVD so I do not have to mess with the headunit. My 2 year old loves my wifes Saturn Vue, she has the DVD system that came with it.
Retroburban 07-09-2006, 01:24 PM I had a dealer aftermarket guy tell me they come in all the time in like two yrs and have to be replaced, because they break- too much vibration.
I do not know if this is true or not as I do not have one in either vehicle, but I asked about it a lot for my Sierra.
Not to turn you away, just thought I`d pass it around.
txsman2930 07-09-2006, 02:05 PM I just bought a portable 7" screen DVD player where the screen rotates 360 degrees so it can be folded, and I just prop it up in the little compartment on the dash. The door works great holding up the DVD player. Then I just use the adaptor for the MP3 player plug in and just pipe in sound through my stereo. Does the job. That's about as high tech as I'm going to get as far as video.
tonydetiger 07-09-2006, 02:17 PM If i were going to put in a DVD system, I'd look into installing the monitors in the headrest. The view out of the rear view mirror is so limited as it is.
JMO though.
Retroburban 07-09-2006, 02:18 PM I was wondering if the audio could do that. I guess it is not just for your IPOD!
BamaHHR 07-09-2006, 02:20 PM We plan to install a DVD system in the headrests. I was given a price of $1000 to install an overhead system.

If you're daring, you can do it yourself. I installed some in my truck and it was a lot easier than I thought. I have about $400 in it, and that includes 2 7" monitors, DVD Player (I chose a 1/2 DIN to put in my dash, you can get one to mount under the seat probably even cheaper), and 2 RF dual source wireless headphones (I bought dual source becaus I plan to add a Playstation). I also can play the audio through my stereo if I want to, and doing that is easy with the HHR as it has the aux input on the front of the headunit.
I plan on doing the same thing to the HHR as time permits.
You can see pictures of my install in my truck HERE (http://members.cox.net/mmorin12/hemi)
It's towards the bottom of the page.
I did not want to do an overhead in my truck, and I do not want to do an overhead in the HHR for the same reason mentioned above...... The view from the rear view.
Like I said, it was a lot easier than it looks. Just shop around and do some research.
