View Full Version : 2.2 or 2.4 IMCO T924 muffler owners Poll
cj krause 07-12-2006, 08:33 PM Please only vote if you have a IMCO T924 installed on your 2.2 or 2.4
the goal of this poll is simple, to get a owner poll and no one has to put their name on it on how they feel about the T924 turbo muffler.
It does not matter what engine you have 2.2 or 2.4. as long as you have a T924 on it.
GDZHHR 07-12-2006, 08:40 PM Uhh....where's the poll?
And why in 2.2, there are many of us with 2.4's that have the IMCO?
Just curious.:D
cj krause 07-12-2006, 08:46 PM It doesnt matter what engine you have,,, just in the one forum.
as long as you own one
the post goes before the poll, kind of weird

They actually are done at the same time.;)
I was just wondering why you didn't put this in the general forum, no biggie.
Good idea especially with all of the new owners.:thumb:
Thanks, CJ

the poll shows up after you post. it isnt there until you hit submit and you tell it how many ?'s on the poll.
patience Grasshopper, it was coming. :D
courthousedeb 07-12-2006, 09:07 PM I like the sound, performance and increase in gas mileage. Would never even consider going back to OEM.

CJ, I know how the polls work and I have done them before. You could have created the poll with your first post in this thread then it would have posted at the same time as your first post.
If I'm not mistaken, a poll was not up until you responded to my post. I may be wrong, but I'm guessing that's when you created it.;)
cj krause 07-12-2006, 10:16 PM NOOOOOOOOOOO
the post was in the works from the very beginning , hence the name of the post, and it was attached with the first post. dont ask me why it took so long to post here.

captain howdy 07-12-2006, 11:19 PM I was trying to break up the tension with humor but I didn't want anyone to think I was making fun of them. Thanks for the how to. :one:
SindyDix 07-12-2006, 11:23 PM Your doing well GrassHopper!
GDZHHR 07-12-2006, 11:24 PM Sorry CJ, I really didn't mean for this to happen!
When the natives are restless though ya never know whats gonna go down!:D
cj krause 07-13-2006, 01:40 PM it is strange that when someone posts on the poll it does not show it as a new post.
seems odd to me.
cj krause 07-14-2006, 02:13 AM i hope all the IMCO owners see this thread and at least post to the poll
GDZHHR 07-14-2006, 11:00 AM You can vote without it being a post. They may think that the vote says it all!
cj krause 07-15-2006, 10:43 AM i wish when you voted it counted as a poll to keep it refreshed and higher up on the list
GDZHHR 07-15-2006, 02:09 PM If we keep talking about it, it will!;)
cj krause 07-16-2006, 08:12 AM guess you are right
GDZHHR 07-16-2006, 01:49 PM Seems to be working so far though it would be nice for a few comments. This is a topic that has had a lot of discussion though.
courthousedeb 07-16-2006, 02:16 PM I wonder how many of the members have actually put on the IMCO 924. Maybe if we had a thread of who has done it...that way, the ones that want to check it out before purchasing might be able to contact someone close to them.
Alzonie 07-19-2006, 04:47 PM Thanks Deb! That's just where I'm at now. I just ordered a T-924 Saturday and I'm curious about what people's thoughts on it are. I don't know whether to put it on my Wife's HHR (Which I don't drive!:( ), or on the '96 Altima that I use. It also has a 2.4 Double OHC 4cyl. engine like the HHR, So I guess the results would be similar:confused: . I figure that way at least I'll enjoy it. (Even though I'm an Old Fart!! )
GDZHHR 07-19-2006, 07:15 PM I really like mine, sound and performance. But the wife doesn't want one on hers.
Doesn't care about the sound and she can't see the point if its not going to make a big difference in peformance, which to her means mpg's.
KY Dave 07-19-2006, 07:22 PM My wife won't go for one on her Cobalt. She thinks it is crazy that I put out money to have something that sounds "trashy". But I like it.

there is a drone on the cobalt from 70 to 80. the T924 gets rid of it and to be honest i think this muffler should come stock on the cobalt. mileage increased around 1 to 2 in town and 2 to 4 on the road.
the drone goes away and the increase in pick up is amazing on that car. the only time on the cobalt you hear it is if you put your foot in it and after 3 to 4 weeks it is absolutely quiet and slightly loud on hard take offs.
if you have a cobalt this is a must mod and if you ever get a new muffler put this on, you will not regret it
I wish the T924 did for my 2.2 what it did for my daughters 2.2 in her cobalt. it is good on the HHR, it is freaking phenominal on her cobalt
courthousedeb 07-19-2006, 11:24 PM I love it on mine and can hardly wait to combine it with the CGS intake.
PDice 07-20-2006, 10:10 PM I decided to trust you guys and start the muffler & CGS intake mod. A friend recommended Classic Muffler & Automotive (Jim Erwin Racing) here in Louisville, KY for the IMCO T-924 installation.
I contact them on Tuesday, told them what I wanted and they said no problem we can get the muffler and install it whenever you want. So today they installed the T-924 and put my old tip on it.
These guys were unbelievable (and I am a picky MoFo)!!! Appointment for this morning at 8:30... They show up at 8:40 and have the car down off the rack at 9:05 for me to inspect!! Perfect welds, perfect placement.. Perfectly satisfied.
The muffler sounds real good too, nice low throaty sound (not barky)... Thanks to everyone here for the information on this mod. I am saving my lunch money to do the CGS intake next.

Sometimes, it's the other way around. My boyfriend was floored when I told him I was taking my HHR to have a new muffler put on it. He said..."that's a brand new car with a brand new muffler" :wtf: I then politely reminded him that it was my car and when it was all done, he would understand why I did it. Drove up to his house...he liked the sound and when I let him drive it...he couldn't believe the difference. He now brags to his friends how his girlfriend put this cool muffler on her new car and it made a world of difference.

Already have the IMCO...CGS arrived this afternoon and will be installed this weekend. Can hardy wait to get it done. Boyfriend now understands my obsession and is looking forward to helping me do the install. Will report back once it's on and taken for a ride. Should definitely give my 2.2L a big boost.
TeverHHR 07-22-2006, 09:35 AM Got rid of the turtle this morning. I am now the proud driver of a CGS intake and the T924 muffler. First impression is pretty good. I have only driven it from the muffler shop to home, about 7 miles. Got in to it as hard as I could, seems to have a little more torque steer and a little more pull in the low end, which is good. I am still unsure on the sound. I like it, but I don't want to run around sounding like I am in my mid life crisis (38 yrs old here. I did test drive the 06 arrest me red SS Cobalt 5 speed for a few laps though before buying the HHR though). The sound is by no means a fart can, just louder and deeper than stock. I think a lot of it is from the intake, the 924 just deepens it. I had the intake on for about 1 week prior to the muffler, and it had allready changed the tone, seems like the muffler just made it deeper and little louder, not much though. For now :thumb:

cj krause 07-22-2006, 09:48 AM after about 3 to 4 weeks and some miles
the sound will get quieter cause it will have some carbon on it
its only louder then when you really put your foot in it
enjoy
TX-HHR 07-22-2006, 10:53 AM Looks like we are quickly developing a standard for intake/exhuast mods. :thumb: CGS and 924. I agree with CJ the sound mellows after a few weeks, but was never ricer to begin with. I really like this mod.
So who else has both?
TeverHHR 07-22-2006, 03:27 PM Had a little longer trip and I really like it. It seems to have a little more on the low end. I only have the 2.2. Coming from a 220hp Impala, it needs a little more oomph. The more I drove and listen, the more I liked it. I am definatly happy with it. To those who tested this combo,

 So Deb, There is now a CGS available for the 2.2? One that doesn't require grinding something down, or cutting something off to make it fit?
Alzonie 07-22-2006, 04:50 PM Thanks Deb! That's just where I'm at now. I just ordered a T-924 Saturday and I'm curious about what people's thoughts on it are. :D The T-924 arrived yesterday and I guess I'll have it put on the Altima Tuesday. After I let her hear what it sounds like, (And she doesn't point and laugh! ) Maybe I can twist her arm enough to go for one on the HHR too;)! Maybe I can stretch the truth a bit and say she'll get 5 or 6 more miles to the gallon.:red: Once it's on, it's on!!:thumb:
cj krause 07-22-2006, 04:54 PM all you have to do is
mark the bar where the bend is on the bottom of the bend.
straighten the bar flat
bend the bar the same way it was before 2 inches closer to the tube
drill a new hole to the appropiate spot
you remove the back left bolt from the top of the intake (where the new bolt goes)
get a longer bolt and it needs to be 2 inches or 50 mm long
bolt it to the back left where u took it out
that is all the necessary changes to make to make it fit.
DaJoker 07-22-2006, 10:55 PM Well, got my I924 installed today. Not a bad mod really. 35 bucks for the Imco, and only 40 for install. Sounds incredible. Even though it was hot around here today (92) I couldn't help but ride around with the windows down just listening. Hell, I've still got the stock intake and it surprised the crap out of me when I chirped the tires after getting the green at the light by my house. Can't wait for the CGS to get here now. Was lucky and got one of them thar ceramic coated ones.

:( Well, my plans got shot down this Morning! I took my Altima to two different muffler shops and got the same story. Seems the exhaust pipe on it is 1 3/4 in., not 2 in. like I thought.:red: Both places told me going from that to 2 1/4 in. is a bit of a stretch. So I guess I'll have to get it on the HHR one of these days when the "Little Woman" isn't looking.
Meantime I ordered a T-909, which has 2 in. pipes, for the Altima. Muffler guys said that would work. (I Hope!!) :bye:

all they have to do is make an adapter and swedge it from the 1.75 in on the 2.25 to the muffler. the tip after can be adapted or welded.
i would suggest another muffler shop that knows what it is doing
many of us that have 2.2's on our HHRs and the 2.2 has 1 3/4 in pipe and we all have and use the T924. so just ask them if they want to do the job and do they know how to make an adapter and swedge it to make it fit. you arent talking the whole pipe, you are talking a 4 in piece of 1 3/4 in pipe or 2 in to swedge it to 2 1/4.
if they have any kind of equipment they will do it for you. they just want you to buy theirs instead.
mcavey 07-24-2006, 07:41 PM Well, I now have the CGS and the T-muffler installed. I had the CGS intake for a couple weeks now, and it had a good performance boost. I put the muffler on and notice maybe a slight performance boost. Soooo, my conclusion is that the 'real' need is the CGS intake. The CGS is going to give you the most boost. The muffler does at a nice sound; however I do not see much of an improvement from the OEM. But hell, for $28 bucks... it is worth it for the slight boost and good sound!!!
And yeah, I have the 2.2L, and I had to grind down the CGS to make it fit. It is working good now.
So now what?? What is the next mod to give us 2.2L owners more power? Header maybe? What will Header's give me (as in performance)?
I must admit though.... In hindsight I would have paid the extra $650.00 to get the 2.4L engine. Even though it is not a major upgrade from the 2.2L, it is still 30HP that I am missing out on. Oh well, I will wait till the Turbo or V6 version hits in 2008! Then I will upgrade. For now I am having fun with moding the HHR.

Heartbeat 08-15-2006, 12:15 PM All engines need to breathe, and the CGS with the T924 lets our HHR's breathe. More air in equals more power!:thumb: The more air in the engine the more exhaust leaves the engine and the more boost is produced, and so on and so on.

DDock 04-21-2007, 09:42 PM When installing the T924, by chance did anyone change their exhaust tip. I went to Meineke to get mine installed and they talked me into getting an exhaust tip with a resonator in it. I've only had it installed for two days. Trying to get use to the new sound. It's fine when you are not accelarating. But when you accelerate it's a bit loud. I'm trying to figure out is it loudr because of the resonator tip or not? Need in put. I saw in this earlier thread where someone paid $40.00 to intall theirs. Meineke charged me $197.00. They must have seen me coming. I feel like such a sucker.
Harpozep 04-21-2007, 10:44 PM I took ours off after three days. It is for sale with a nice chrome tip. Just too loud for a daily driving family car. It has a nicely welded custom bracket as well.
http://www.pbase.com/harpozep/image/65664492.jpg
I'd rather hear my daughter speak from tha back seat than hear the muffler or even get its little gain in MPG.
I still have the CGS intake with the outlaw on, but it may come off to if I cannot get it to stop rattling against the body and sounding like a junk box. It does this at startup, reverse, turning, and just when hitting bumps. I readjust it sometimes three times a day.
Time for a new bracket, or to take the outlaw off, or just restore the stock intake. I have better things to do with my time than forever readjusting the intake.
I have Covairs for all the finicky stuff. I just want to drive the HHR and do mods that do not need constant upkeep.
SoCalHHR 04-22-2007, 12:13 AM Tips can totally change the sound of a muffler. Resonator tips will generally make the tone much louder aka "import" sounding. Any tip that gets larger in diameter will increase the exhaust notes loudness exponentially - similar to a megaphone. For the quietest tone, stick with a small diameter tip the same size as the muffler outlet, and one that is uniform in size.
Hope it helps,

 $197.00?? How could they justify such a price? I had an IMCO put on the HHR, and one put on my Altima several Months ago and was charged $40.00 for one, and $35.00 for the other. Same shop, but a different guy in the office. (There was 2 or 3 weeks in between the two installations!) I put the tip that I had bought at the dealer, when we bought the HHR, back on the new Turbo. It's sort of a resonator type I'd say, and it does have a different sound than the Altima since I had them just put on a plain chrome tip with a turned down end. Neither one is what I'd consider "Loud" though by any means!! (And I'm an Old Fart! )
