View Full Version : 20's and springs
inarmywpride 07-13-2006, 03:50 PM So i want to do 20's. And i want to lower it but not to low. So i no people say gold whatevers are to low. I was thinking eibach. I would love to get progress but i think they would be to low. Just wanted to ask and see if you guys could give your 2 cents
Thanks
Cory
SoCalHHR 07-13-2006, 08:12 PM My :2cents: : Put your chosen wheel tire combination on first, then see where you're at. Several members here have 20's and are lowered, so I'm sure they will chime in with more insight soon.
Just remember; 20's on an HHR are like getting a death sentence from potholes:

crowbar 07-13-2006, 09:52 PM you sure dont want goldlines and 20's youre right about that, i think flyhhr has 20's with the eibach kit, yeah potholes will be a problem if your not used to looking out for them, but the looks youll get make up for that ;)
chuktaylor2 07-13-2006, 09:53 PM In my opinion goldlines would look the best but the eibach's would look pretty good too (although they aren't as low). I currently have the eibach's in combination with 18" wheels and i like the stance but I'm going to go with goldlines to eliminate some of the gap. if you decide to go with 20's i think it would look good with either gl's or eibachs but with eibach you'd have a little more of a comfort zone or cushion when it comes to space between the tire and fender

DAYYYYUMMM :censored: ..
that same thing has happened on my 03 Harley D F150 truck...curb kissin and such, it sux!!
well from what ive read, it seems you can AND cant put 20s on this ride without something happening(like the whole rubbing thing). can someone give a definate answer if you can or cant put 20s on and not have to "roll the fender", BTW whats that mean, and what do you do to the fender??
i was thinking of putting 20s on(NOT going to lower the HHR), but keeping the wheel the same width as the original, or slightly wider, and hopefully that wont cause any rubbing of the tires; also i know that some shops have this one thing that they mount onto the spindle and measure exactly how big of a rim you can get...
ah hell this gets frustrating cuz i really want to buy some rims
SoCalHHR 07-15-2006, 01:53 PM If you want to put 20's on and NOT lower, you will be fine, providing you keep close to the stock overall tire size. I had a customer here a few days ago who just stuck 20's on at stock height with no probs. The "rubbing" issue comes into play only when you lower, or go to a much wider/taller tire.
crowbar 07-17-2006, 09:27 AM also you could lower it with the eibach kit with no problems but the goldlines lower it too much (for 20"s that is)
larryv 07-24-2006, 08:01 PM  Love your lowered HHR, what size wheels and tires are you using and do they rub? and  are you using the goldline springs? Thanks
O6ChevyHHR 07-25-2006, 09:46 AM he has 20s by 8.5 i think and he has the goldlines, and the ride is harsh sometime.

they rubbed in the rear but i grinded out the rear inner fender and its good to go now
crowbar 07-25-2006, 10:02 AM :wtf:
and the ride is harsh sometime.
uh........... no its not, it rides like everyone else's with goldlines
HHR PNOY 07-25-2006, 11:08 AM he has 20s by 8.5 i think and he has the goldlines, and the ride is harsh sometime.
06...do you even know what goldlines look like, let alone ride in an HHR with goldlines?

i know. we need a sticky: dont base your aftermarket parts spending based on 06chevyhhr's comments......... he cant even drive yet
SCOOT 07-25-2006, 12:40 PM ... not have to "roll the fender", BTW whats that mean, and what do you do to the fender??
Seeing that this specific Q hasn't really been addressed, here's my long-winded attempt.
'Rolling' relates to reducing (or eliminating) the body metal that's bent INTO the fender well from the factory. The same can be achieved by grinding  the lip off... as Crowbar has previously stated. Either way, the end-product is that you have MORE offset (clearance towards the OUTSIDE/exterior of the vehicle) in the wheel well :thumb:.
As you know, or have read, the HHR will only accommodate certain rim widths *without* rubbing. Rolling will aid in giving the additional clearance needed without having to do other, more drastic, modification (e.g. body work, etc...). Please note the obvious- a 10" wide Vette rim, or similar, WILL still hit!!!
A note on lowering...
Dropping the HHR (any drop- any vehicle) will reduce the amount of factory 'cushion' (travel space) the wheel assembly needs for absorbtion when hitting a bump/loading the suspension. Granted, lowering generally equates to a stiffer suspension (which inherently means reduced wheel travel) ... but ( stick with me here) it still puts the whole vehicle (that is- parts that are mounted ON the body springs) closer to the ground. A side affect is it also happens to put these 'dropped' parts (e.g. body) closer to other parts (like suspension components) that 'move' which might result in 'rub'.
:wtf:
Sometimes the lack of 'cushion' isn't a problem for substancial drops (factory rim widths), whereas for others- it IS (wider, non-factory rims + lowering).
LASTLY ()... The whole 'rubbing' problem should only happen under certain circumstances (that compress suspension- reducing travel), such as: hauling heavy loads (e.g. stereo equipment)/multiple people, hard cornering (auto crossing), hitting large bumps/pot holes (unavoidable).
(whew) ... hope this helps clear things up.

I like it, but what's the offset on his rims?
1HotHHR 10-21-2006, 06:43 PM I have Progress springs on Harvey and I hope to go back to stock this next week end. Progress springs go very low and bottom out all the time. Klank, klank. They have told me that they are going to be coming out with a different design and will probably swap them in the near future. The car looks great, the rides a real KILLER. I hope this helps.
See ya down the road.
Bud / Harvey
