Through a special agreement, we now have CGS Intakes available with a "Jet Hot" ceramic coating for a slight upcharge HERE (http://www.socalhhr.citymax.com/catalog/item/2608356/3280334.htm).
In addition to shielding the intake tube from engine heat, this finish provides a shiny chrome-like appearance resembling polished aluminum (intake is steel tubing).

Here's a comparison picture:

For the discriminating HHR owner, we will have a limited number of these special CGS Intakes available from each production run.
Same great intake - cooler finish!

Just a heads up! :thumb:

Well...boo hoo...I just ordered mine today and it wasn't there. :(

Do these new ones require modification for the 2.2L like the original one?

Yes. Same intake - just a different finish Deb.

Sorry, we just got them up this evening.

you think they might swap out for the new tube for a small fee and send the other back to them?
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

CJ , this is a special arrangement we have with CGS and can only be done on new raw intakes. It would cost them quite a lot to have the powder coat removed and then ceramic coated - there's always Ebay!

Yes, I knew some people would be hurt, just buying the original one, but we just got them in and pics up...sorry! :( Remember, it's the same intake, only the appearance is changed...

Mike
I ordered mine this morning after I saw this post. I thought something might be coming up but I thought it might be something to do with forced cool air intake, kind of like CJ's idea. I am glad I waited but I hope I get it soon enough to install before our trip the middle of next week to northern Ontario. Thanks Mike

Hi John, I saw your order and it will ship out today. We have another "add-on mod" coming soon that improves the CGS perfomance - it has to do with airflow but is not "forced induction" related. Best part is, it can be added to ANY existing CGS intake. More details soon...

7-22-06 UPDATE: All our ceramic coated versions are now sold out. There will be a limited number available in the next (and all future), production runs, so if you're interested in a ceramic coated intake, it's best to call me and get put on the list. This way we know exactly how many to order.

The ceramic coated version is already becoming more popular than we anticipated! :thumb:

NOTE: We still have plenty of the regular powder-coated intakes in stock! :thumb: Only the ceramics are out of stock.

I ordered mine Thursday morning from North Carolina and I received it in the mail today, Saturday. I guess I was one of the lucky ones to get the ceramic coated. It looks great. Mike Thank You very much. I will post some pictures after I install it but unfortunately my wife has me going to a birthday party this afternoon so maybe tonight. I can't wait. Thanks again Mike and SoCal. :D

Have you done this? Has anyone done this?

I'm just wondering about prep work and type of paint.

I imagine engine paint should work for the cgs.

I'm getting ready to custom paint my original intake. No special paint is required. Just remove the stickers, sand the powder coat finish down well to provide a good tooth, then prime and paint as you normally would. Be sure to let the paint cure well before attempting to re-install the intake. I would run your stocker for a couple of days to be sure the paint has cured. - Then you'll appreciate the CGS that much more after you reinstall it!

I have a "mui especial" paint job planned for mine! ;)

I thought I would post some picts of my new intake and the cleaned up engine bay. I removed both the old air filter bracket and oil filler extension. It was very easy to install. The biggest difficulty was to get the filter positioned like I wanted. I am looking forward to see what SoCal has next. I was going to wait to install until after our 2200 mile trip to northern Ontario beginning on Thursday, but decided to go ahead and do it know. The ceramic coating looks great, but I don't think it adds any performance. Thanks to everyone for their help. This is a great site, thanks to all of the moderators. :thumb:

Now I just have to find someone to put that color in a spray can, buy the intake, and I am on my way to good looking engine compartment.:D

Go to your local auto body supply house. They can mix up Victory Red for you and put it in a rattle can. I had Dark Silver Metallic mixed up for a rear bumper repair and it matches perfectly. Just a head's up. :thumb:

Duplicolor has a perfect match, I think the item number is #0400 Victory Red, they have it listed as a truck/suv paint. I bought it to do some painting and can't tell the difference between it and the small can I got from the dealer. Also half the price for twice as much!

Hope this helps.

Mike,

The shop you're talking about, do they also do ceramic spray paint that can withstand engine heat?

Maybe this is a dumb question: Since the intakes are powdercoated anyway, why not just use chrome powdercoat instead of the ceramic coat? Wouldn't the cost be the same as the clear powdercoat?

Advantages / disadvantages of either type finish?

Mike,

The shop you're talking about, do they also do ceramic spray paint that can withstand engine heat?

PNOY, I don't think that has been perfected yet! Jet hot coating is a much more expensive process than painting; usually just a set of shorty "hot rod" headers runs over $100. If you want ceramic, I would pay to have it done right.

I don't think you can powdercoat crome.

You could buy one and take it to a crome shop and get it done.

crazybob
07-31-2006, 12:44 AM
Well, I KNOW that there is a "chrome" powdercoat.

A. I saw some samples at a place that powdercoats.
B. My stubby antenna is chrome powdercoat.
C. Article: http://www.pfonline.com/articles/040202.html

Yeah, of course I can get it done at a plating shop. I was making a suggestion due to the cost involved. No, it doesn't look EXACTLY like true chrome, but it looks pretty darned good.

Yup, they make a chrome like powdercoat except they usually don't call it chrome to my knowledge. I think powdercoating place I use the most calls it metallic silver if I'm not mistaken. Like crazybob said it doesn't exactly look like chrome put is very close. They also have a powdercoat that looks like black chrome.

Well my bad. Thanks for the info you guys.
I think that a intake in the black chrome would look killer on my little hot rod.

Both Outlaw filters look the same - just picture the end cap in blue.

The filter gauze on both is still "K&N Red."

Basically, you won't see the painted cap anyway as it's on the bottom when installed in the HHR.

Hope it helps,

I was just wondering if this is necessary or an issue with the cgs filter or is it just another way to spend some money. I ordered one of the new "outlaw" filters for my cgs, but I was just wondering about this hydro shield gizmo. Does anyone have any experience with them or opinions. Thanks

http://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/files/9/3/0/HydroShield.jpg

Also I wanted to report we just returned from two weeks in Northern Ontario :canada: and the HHR ran like a charm. The anti sway bar and CGS Intake really spiced up the 2200 mile trip and as long as I kept my foot out of the throttle the gas mileage remained at a constant 28.5 mpg. That's with a fully loaded roof rack, three adults and a 60 pound irish setter. It was a great trip and a nice change from driving a mini van.

cyberone3
08-16-2006, 11:04 AM
the hydro shield is only if the intake is really low like in the fog light hole where water would hit, if water would get in that high up in the engine compartment then gm would have some sort of water shield on the stock intake as it gets its air from the fender well

The Hyro-Shield is not necessary from a water spalshing standpoint, as the CGS intake places the filter out of harm's way. However, these "socks" so prevent a lot of microscopic dust from ever entering the filter and can extend the time between cleanings greatly.

The $23 price is right in line too. Not bad at all.

Wack

I did not order one yet. I just came across them on the following site. I haven't really done anymore research yet. I did order the new "outlaw" filter for my CGS because I am interested in doing what CJ Krause did with his home made ram air adaption to his CGS Intake. If you haven't run across CJ yet he is a wonderful resource on this forum. :thumb:

The site link: http://www.autoanything.com/air-filters/65A2582A0A0.aspx

I finally found CJ's Post for his ram air setup: http://chevyhhr.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3042

On our dirtbikes we run a filter sock over the top of our filter element that we spray with the same filter oil that the filter element gets. It greatly increases the time between cleanings for the main element (still have to change/clean the filter socks but thats a lot easier than the full filter). Is this the same sort of deal? If it is they sell a special sock for the dirtbike filters, but pool cleaner filter socks are the same thing and come 3 in a pack for $8-$10 at most places.
