View Full Version : 5 speed rolls away............ crowbar 07-20-2006, 01:07 PM anyone else with the manual tranny notice that if you leave the car parked on the smallest hill without the e brake up it rolls away or is it just mine:confused: DARK AGE 53 07-20-2006, 01:23 PM What gear, unless it's a steep incline I would think 1st or reverse gear would hold. courthousedeb 07-20-2006, 01:33 PM 5 speed here...no problems...but I always put on the emergency brake even if it's parked on a flat surface. Force of habit, as last several vehicles were stick shifts as well...and I didn't trust their e-brake to hold. ng8650 07-20-2006, 01:37 PM I've got an auto but I still use the e-brake on any kind of incline... Ng crowbar 07-20-2006, 01:44 PM i checked all the gears, ive had stick shifts 10 years never seen one do this. the slightest incline will make it roll. i noticed after comming out of the gas station the other night that the car had moved. so i found a hill and played with it the higher the grade the faster it will roll with the engine trying to turn over. i dont know what to think of this, weak clutch mabey? it (the cltch) isnt slipping any when i drive? -md- HHR 07-20-2006, 02:38 PM i dont know what to think of this, weak clutch mabey? it (the cltch) isnt slipping any when i drive? I always put it in first and pull ebrake. :thumb: Also I do not think we have a weak clutch. Hell I can chirp secound and sometimes third, not that I recommend to do this.  SoCalHHR 07-20-2006, 03:47 PM i checked all the gears, ive had stick shifts 10 years never seen one do this. the slightest incline will make it roll. i noticed after comming out of the gas station the other night that the car had moved. so i found a hill and played with it the higher the grade the faster it will roll with the engine trying to turn over. i dont know what to think of this, weak clutch mabey? it (the cltch) isnt slipping any when i drive? If the engine is "trying to turn over" it certainly isn't a weak clutch. the clutch is holding fine. Sounds to me like you should have your e-brake adjusted up. Go to the dealer and tell them your car is "rolling away." They should hook you up. :thumb: ivtech 07-20-2006, 05:04 PM I park on an incline never had a problem. I always leave it in reverse and hand brake on. I always park with tranny left in 1st or reverse and hand brake on even on level ground. SCOOT 07-20-2006, 07:35 PM CROWBAR.. Haven't checked that yet, but, my driveway is about 65foot worth of 20* slope. The only thing I've EVER noticed with ANY of my MTX's is that it slides (literally) down the drive in the winter!!! I've woke on more than one occasion to find my Mustang in the woman (across the street) front yard!  To answer your question, though - never happened to me... I typically always use the e-brake when parking (and put it in 1st). I'll try tomorrow and repost results. The could end up being as much fun as watching paint dry... MiDan 08-01-2006, 02:15 PM I've got a 5 speed... the parking brake should hold, but I use 1st or reverse to help out.... SindyDix 08-01-2006, 03:09 PM Manual here too. Force of habit to use the emergency brake. All holds well here. txsman2930 08-01-2006, 04:12 PM I've never had that problem, but only because I always set my parking brake to avoid that exact problem. Majority of your experienced manual drivers will tell you to always set your parking brake. I think some consider 1st gear as the same thing as "Park" on an automatic. But when you think about it, the car is actually in gear. So there is always the possibility of it rolling if one doesn't set their parking brake. WA_HHR 08-02-2006, 12:57 AM I use 1st/reverse, set e-brake, and if near a curb turn wheels to curb. mine hasn't rolled yet. knock on wood.... nfboy 08-02-2006, 08:10 AM While many people call it am emergency brake, it is actually a parking brake. One should always engage that brake when parking a standard shift vehicle in particular, but it does not hurt to use it even with an auto transmission. Transmissions are not meant to hold a vehicle in place, especially on an incline. dan-d 08-11-2006, 11:11 AM I've got an auto but I still use the e-brake on any kind of incline... Ng That's always the smart thing to do, the parking pawl in an ATX is often pretty skimpy. They're sometimes just a little lever looking thing or a pin about 3/8 of an inch. I've seen many of these things broken over the years by people relying on them to hold a car in park while on a hill. |
