View Full Version : A/C problem or not?

 On all the vehicles I've owned over the last dozen years or so whenever the A/C has been running and you stop and park somewhere, condensate drains out on the ground for a minute or so. I've don't think I've ever seen anything draining from the HHR. Has anyone else noticed (Or NOT noticed) this?:frown: I'm wondering if a drain line is plugged up somewhere?:( Other than that (and the whine) the A/C works fine!
We sure needed it today! 118 degrees in Phoenix!:scared:

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the condensate drain is located on the firewall. At least I hope that's what it is. if not I've got another leak to get checked out.

 I'll have to go out and check for sure as soon as the Wife gets home from work this afternoon. I even called the Service Rep at my local Chevy Dealer (This guy drives an HHR too:thumb:) and asked him about it.
He said he never really paid any particular attention to it, but didn't recall seeing any drainage either. He told me he'd try to remember to look after he went home last night and give me a call. I haven't heard anything from him, naturally!!

 I think you're probably right about the firewall location. That seems about where it drains from on other cars I've had.;)
I guess if I don't see any sign of draining I'd better get it checked out. If there's stagnant water sitting in there someplace that wouldn't be healthy!
Ugly Green stuff might start growing.:scared: (And I don't mean Broccoli)
Poor little HHR might need a "Cystoscopy"!! OUCH!!

Cystoscopy! Ouch is right! The drain appears to be on the passenger side firewall. I can't see in there that well, but appears to be "the" spot.

I figure that's the way it should be. Dripping out all the time and leaving a little puddle wherever you stop for a minute or so.
Wonder if this has anything to do with the sloshing sound up front that I've read about some people having ??

My HHR does it's thing when hot outside, humid with A/C on. Leaves a trail down the driveway when backing out, soo, it does as designed. Pee's like the Astro, the Monte, the Impala, and all others. Hate it when it can't pee, makes a mess.(really)

:D I can't recall seeing anyone in the Forum mentioning this particular problem, but there is a TSB referring to it.. I'm wondering if there might be some connection between this and those of us with "Non-peeing":roll:HHRs?

Air Conditioning - Water Leaks Onto Passenger Front Floor
http://www.alldata.com/tsb/General-M...016/index.html

My Wife hasn't mentioned seeing this, but most of her trips are short (10 miles or less) and maybe it's something that needs more time for water to build up in there, somewhere, before it might leak or blow out from the vents?
I'm going to refer the Service Advisor to this TSB when we take the car in, probably early Friday when we can leave it all day. That'll give them half a day to ignore it !!

No peeing here. THen again I only use mine for 5 to 10 min's. I run it till the air gets cold then recirculate it with the A/C off. THe air will stay cold for about 2 to 3 hours, but I don't live in the hottest part of the world.

dbarberaz
07-23-2006, 11:05 PM
I have not noticed any myself. I do not run the A/C much. Even in Arizona I run the recirculate air with the A/C off and it does stay cool. I only run the A/C for about 5 minutes, when I first get in the car.
I also have never seen a water build up on the floor. Maybe I will run the A/C Monday on my way home from work and see if my drive gets wet.

Unless you have the vent set to either defrost or floor only, you are running your a/c.

That's why its cool air!;)

I do know that you are still running the A/C, what I was going to watch is see if there is a diffrence.

Not necessarily true. The A/C must be turned on. What position the circulation button is in makes no difference (vent, defrost, floor or some combo). Push the centre of your temp button and that turns the A/C on or off (yellow light shows on or off).

Whenever the controls are set to "recirc" the A/C compressor is on.

Even when the A/C light is off, the A/C is still on (and compressor is running), in recirc mode.

We've been through this several times on this forum...

That's what I'm wondering:confused: Has anyone ever had moisture blowing out of the vents, or water leaking on the pass. side floor from under the dash? Evidently there is some kind of problem since Chevy has a TSB referring to it.

I stand corrected. Just read this in the manual. Recirc on others cars I have had did not activate the A/C, unless of course A/C was on.

It is confusing. GM has been doing it for a few years. We could never figure out why my wife's Olds Alero stayed cool in the summer without ever having to use the a/c!

dbarberaz

Mine does not Pee on the floor :D. Guess I am not sure if that is good or bad.

As a recap, I only run my A/C "on" for a few minutes after I start the car. From that point on I just use the recirc air with the A/C "off". YES I know the air is still running.
Today I ran the A/C "on" all the way home. There was no HHR pee on my floor.
So I guess we are back to the question of "Should your HHR pee"? No matter how I ran mine it so I am  but as long as I have no problems I will be glad I have no pee on my floor.

I don't know if this would have anything to do with your lack of pee....but I just noticed you live in AZ.

Been a long time since I was there but I don't remember much humidity.

Do you think this might limit your pee?

You know after I made that post I was thinking maybe the same thing, but I think someone else from Az said he does pee.

Now my pee is fine, just the HHR doesnt pee

Since I put on my CGS Air Intake, I can clearly see the AC Drain line on the passengers side of the firewall. Since everyone is always so helpful to me I went out and took a picture so you know what to look for. It is very difficult to see if you have the stock air filter. Mine drips often in the Charlotte humidity. :D

 Thanks for that picture! At least I know about where to look now. "Coachpete" is getting new carpets because his A/C leaked on the passenger side floor. So there must be a connection between "Non-Peeing" HHRs and the problem he's had. The dealer found a pinched A/C drain on his! And yes, we do have some humidity in the Phoenix area, especially in July and August:( . Nothing like some other parts of the Country, but more than enough to cause A/C draining from both vehicles and homes.:bye:

 We haven't had any leak inside yet, and I don't want one to start either!! We're taking the HHR to the dealer Friday so they can check out the No-Draining problem (Re: The TSB) and the fact they found a pinched drain on Coachpete's car:confused:. I wonder where exactly it was pinched? Doesn't seem to be much of it showing outside the firewall:roll: .
On the Ariz. humidity thing: We got over 3 1/2 in of rain here last night! We're in a low area in a Mobile Home Park and our carport has about 4 in. of water standing in it even now at 8:45 AM! It appears that at some point it was 8 or 9in. high. It has leaked about that much into our storage room and Arizona Room too. Boy, were gonna have a mess to clean up! And to paraphrase: "My God !! :D Well, here's the story I got from the Dealer's Service Dep't yesterday on our "non-peeing" HHR .. Service Rep said they put it up on the rack to check it out and it seems it is draining properly, but it drips onto the steering rack, runs along the rack to the left side, then drops onto the hot exhaust pipe and evaporates! Now I can't verify this 'cause we had left the car with them and went on our way. The guy said possibly if we parked on a slight upgrade or downgrade the draining water might miss hitting the rack just enough to fall straight on the ground. I don't know whether to buy this or not, but at least it's on record now in case some furthur problem pops up with the A/C.:bye:
