courthousedeb 07-24-2006, 08:19 PM Hey...that's pretty cool. I use Mobil 1 in my HHR. Guess I'll add that to the things I need to pick up. You suppose I might be able to get it from Auto Zone when I'm there? ;)
SoCalHHR 07-24-2006, 08:21 PM Great tip for all us M1 users!
Thanks!

That means he's using Royal Purple Synthetic oil. HERE (http://www.royalpurple.com/prodsa/rpmoa.html) is some info about it on their website. :thumb:

Hey I got my Mobil 1 Oil Cap today and it fits fine, but I noted that the original stock cap is a bit different. I has a small vent on the bottom and seems like it is spring loaded on the inside. I have a 2.4L and I was just wondering if you noticed the same thing. It looks like you have the 2.2L
Thanks:smile:
cowboybornlate 08-18-2006, 01:48 AM I've used RP in my last few vehicles and love it. My HHR will be 29 weeks old with as of today 35K miles on it and not a problem one with the engine. My battery did die about a month ago which the dealer replaced and gave me a rental for the day. Other than that, no issues and very happy with my high mileage mobile....

John, I did not notice that difference. And yes I have a 2.2 I would think that the oil cap is the same for 2.2 and 2.4 but i'll check and report back sometime this weekend. :thumb:
TX-HHR 08-19-2006, 12:36 PM I took pictures this morning of the 2.2 HHR stock oil cap and the corvette Mobil1 oil cap. Both have the same grooves that lock it down into the valve cover and both have the same blue o-ring to seal off at the cover. I've been using the Mobil1 cap for a month now, no leaks, no problems. Fits like it was made for the HHR. :thumb:

TX & Mike (SoCal)
I was just wondering if anyone might know why the stock cap has what appears to be a little pressure relief opening. TX yes the Mobil 1 Cap fits perfect and thank You for taking the time to take pictures.:thumb:
I did the same thing this morning. I am still trying to understand this ECOTECH 2.4L. It is very different than the old engines I used to work on from on old V-8 Flat Head to MGB and Volkswagen 4 cylinders. I don't even recognize the plug wires. I see them but they look very foreign to me. Sorry to get off track and show my age, but this is my 100th post since joining and I want to thank everyone on the forum who has offerred help and suggestions. :thumb: :one:
Now back to my question, Does anyone know the purpose of the opening in the bottom of the stock 2.4L, although from TX's picture the 2.2L has the same cap. I wonder what the bottom of Mike's (SoCal) new oil cap looks like.
Here is a picture to illustrate.

Thank You
TX-HHR 08-19-2006, 03:44 PM John,
I don't think the button on the bottom of the stock cap serves any porpose. When I looked mine over this morning the white underside of the stock cap seems to be hollow, but does not appear to vent through the top of the cap. I think the important thing to note is the o-ring that seals the cap to the valve cover is the same on both caps. If the button serves some other purpose I'm clueless.
I know what you mean about the ECO engine, it has all types of new stuff that takes some time to get used to.
The Mobil1 cap sure looks better.

We examined that also, it is not a vent, and the valvetrain pressure is already vented through the PCV line (hose) that runs to the throttle body. That button seems to rest on the metal oil deflector inside the filler hole. It's kinda funky.
The bottom of our cap looks identical to the Mobil 1 cap's underside. :thumb:
I never look at the bottom though...:D

 Thanks, maybe someone else might have some ideas in the future.
SoCalHHR 08-19-2006, 07:05 PM I can tell by your other thread this is a very important topic for you.
ivtech 08-19-2006, 07:13 PM The Ecotec 2.4 is a distributor less engine and the plug caps are coils.
SoCalHHR 08-19-2006, 07:15 PM Charles; you are spoiling all the fun! I was going to start offering high-performance plug wires, chrome coil covers, and red silicone spark plug boots!
:D

I don’t know if I would categorize it as “important,” but I am pretty inquisitive. Maybe it’s my training as an Architect or working on cars with my dad as I was growing up, but I like to know how things go together and how they operate. I guess I have always been kind of a “backyard” mechanic working on most of my own cars. I think you have some of the same inquisitiveness by your responses on the forum and I appreciate that.
That’s why I like the HHR, it the first car I have had in awhile that I want to know as much about as I can and I just like tinkering with it. I looked at both the PT Cruiser and HHR when we were looking for a new vehicle and one of the reasons I decided to go with the HHR is because it looked like it would be a lot easier to work on the engine. The Pt’s engine compartment was just completely full of stuff with very little room to work.
The 18 years on Mini vans just didn’t do much for me, but they did a good job of transporting the girls as they grew up. The HHR is my wife's daily driver and our family car, but I have been able to do a few things to it, as you already know, (CGS Intake and Anti-Sway Bar). I know there are others on the forum with probably a very similar background so I just figured why not ask. Thanks for all of your responses.

Thanks Charles
I know I just need to get a book and start reading about the engine, so I know a little bit more. Kind of like what I had to do for the computer about 15 years ago.

ivtech 08-19-2006, 07:54 PM Mike make little coil covers in chrome or silicone covers in different colors in sets of 4!!
ivtech 08-19-2006, 08:00 PM John I grew working on cars with my father also, but would not try it anymore.
TX-HHR 08-19-2006, 09:49 PM John,
I'm with you when it comes to figuring out how stuff works. I also had my days with carbs and plug wires. Remember when cars had distributors... Anyway, I'm not intimidated by fuel injection or electronic do-dads anymore either...:thumb:
SoCalHHR 08-19-2006, 10:47 PM Not meant as a "Dig" in any way John - just funnin'.
(I hope you find out what it's for!)
