DETROIT - The Honda Civic, which in its latest incarnation offers drivers a more sleek and upscale take on the popular compact car, has claimed the honor of 2006 Car of the Year from Motor Trend magazine.

All four new Civic models — a sedan, a coupe, a high-performance model called the Si and a gasoline-electric hybrid — were given the award. :red:

"Honda deserves a standing ovation for not playing it safe again," Motor Trend's editor in chief, Angus MacKenzie, said in a statement Tuesday. "The engineering passion that Honda ... was founded on radiates from these new Civics."

Motor Trend editors put the Civics through two weeks of track testing, performance drives and walk-around appraisals. The magazine chooses its top car based in part on value, standing in its class and significant developments.

"With their bold, contemporary styling and innovative technology, the new Civics are primed for success in one of the most competitive market segments in the country," Motor Trend said in its announcement.

Motor Trend picked its Car of the Year from a field of 28 new models, including the Audi A3, BMW 3 Series, Cadillac DTS, Chevrolet HHR  :one: , Dodge Charger, Ford Fusion, Mercedes-Benz R-Class, Pontiac Solstice, Toyota Avalon and the Volkswagen Jetta and Passat.

Last year's winner was the Chrysler 300, the uniquely styled sedan that attracted buyers from rappers to grandmothers. Last month, the publication named Nissan's Xterra its sport utility vehicle of the year.

Motor Trend plans to announce its truck of the year in December.

I think its entirely coincidence. LOL!

I think its becasue of the hybrid eddition, plus the nav system option. Which gave it a shoe in for car of the year. The Civic has always been a popluar car and most stolen.

Maybe the Ion designer left Saturn and went to work for Honda. Hmmmm. Where have I heard that scenario before?

The Civic also goes well with teriyaki chicken!

(*Joking: I just bought my wife a 2006 Accord.)

So would you say that an HHR could "Eat a Civic for lunch?"

LOL

Why would you want to eat a Civic..LOL. I had this prof. in college that always said "There is more then one way to skin a cat". I was always ask myself why would anyone want to skin a cat, plus how many ways can it be done, I guess he must know because he must of done it before, which is why he kept bring it up.

Well, when I lived in Seattle for 20+ yrs. R stood for Rainer Beer! Like so many other good things, they closed the Brewery and moved and now its not quite the same! I worked a block away from "The Big R". Had a couple of buddies worked there and on Fridays could get a case of 16 oz. bottles for $4.99! *sigh* Didn't they just beat OU? I like Tech, glad to see them doing well again.

I'm I missing something about these "R' Type logo's or car model's. Everyone has an different prespectives on it. Please do not think I live under a rock or anything.

Usually R stands for racing. Hence some bad a** cars like the Mustang Cobra R  , but ricers have taken to slapping a big red R on anything with a body kit. Also look at all of the import crap labeled as type R, like such cool racing parts as gas pedal covers, shift knobs, and car seat covers.

Yes. Tech beat OU on Saturday with a last play of the game touchdown. 8 seconds on the clock with 2 yds to go and they came through. Now they are going to the Cotton Bowl against Alabama I think.

Its too overated. Too many of them on the roads. I'm glad there is alot less HHR's. I rather have a car that stands out then be a "me-too" driver

However, at the rate that they are selling now, I have a feeling that there will be a lot on the road 2 years from now.

Yup, just like the redesigned Mustang. When they were first released I saw a few on the road. Now 2 model years later they are all over. That seems to be the case with most new released vehicles. You wont be driving a me too car if you customize your HHR. I have to bring my mustang up once again. I saw about 10 million on the road but it never bothered me once because none of them were like MY Mustang. Trust me there will be tons of HHRs on the road and thats why its your job to make yours stand out. :thumb:

That's how the auto makers make it. They bet the bank that people like us will fall in love with some hair brained idea of 4 cylinder modernized '49 Suburban.

Well, it worked. I am in love. And I know I'm not the only one. Thanks Chevy!

I finally saw the New Civic today on the road and I agree with the fact that it looks like a saturn. The only difference it said Honda on it.
