View Full Version : SoCals "Red Dots...Blue Dots" Kit
SoCalHHR 08-09-2006, 03:58 PM We now have the "Red Dots...Blue Dots" kit up on our site. As many of you know, "Blue Dots" are illegal on the road in many states. Our kit allows you to install Blue Dots in your taillight lenses and swap them out to Red Dots if the need arises. The whole kit runs $20 and having the Red Dots included will save you $40 apiece on buying new taillight lenses if you get "popped."
Of course we recommend these for "Show Cars" only as they are not intended for highway use where prohibited. :D
See the kit HERE (http://www.socalhhr.citymax.com/catalog/item/2608356/3372489.htm).
Thanks!
HHR PNOY 08-09-2006, 05:14 PM can someone tell me why they are illegal?
captain howdy 08-09-2006, 05:19 PM Because laws resticting what you do to your vehicle are stupid and don't have to make sense. ;) That's my theory on why they are illegal.
captain howdy 08-09-2006, 05:24 PM So the kit basically is just a set of blue and a set of red just incase? Wouldn't it be better to sell them indidually and then give a discount if you want them both as a set? Then you give people a choice as to what they want. I'm sure most people are going to want to buy just red or just blue. Now if you offered some special quick change base that would be a different story.

That's like here in Ariz. it's perfectly fine to drive your pickup around with half a dozen people bouncing around in the open bed, but if you're in the cab you better damn well have your seat belts on !! Try to make any sense out of that!!

I thought long and hard about this and the kit is how we are offering it. This gives owners the ability to swap out the Dots if needed, to get a ticket :D signed off, etc. It also saves on shipping - as you don't have to pay for it twice if you need Red Dots later.
There are many other places online you can buy Blue Dots singularly.
Just make sure you are getting real glass dots and not plastic. :thumb:
JimZ_HHR 08-09-2006, 07:27 PM What do 'blue dots' do?
SoCalHHR 08-09-2006, 07:33 PM What do 'blue dots' do?
They go in the center of your taillight lenses like this:

and produce a unique lighting effect.
It's difficult to get an accurate picture of how they look, you would have to see them...

Very good point!  I still haven't put my red dots in because I want to tint my tail lights first first. :red:

Man, - I think lacquer tinting the taillights like Bud did on Harvey, - then adding Blue dots would be killer! :one:
Maybe once I get my custom painting done....:D

I guess that's something you would have to see in person to appreciate...

i'd like to know how or want is done. is there a how to on this?
captain howdy 08-09-2006, 08:03 PM I believe the way a body shop that paints light does it is with a little black paint mixed with a whole lot of clear. If you want to do it yourself out of a can you can use SVT Niteshades, SVT spray on tint, or Pactra RC294 window tint for RC and model cars. Then clear coat and buff after for a nice shine.

When I spoke with Bud at solvang, that is how he described it was done on his HHR "Harvey."

They give your tail lights sort of "Purple-ish" kind of glow that's really cool !!

Just read above in the thread... :thumb:
Retroburban 08-10-2006, 12:55 AM Hey, I just did this on my truck on Monday. Wow, it really is easy, and for less than $20 for the VHT Nightshades and a can of clearcoat, what a difference.
Plan on doing the HHR when it comes back from the body shop!!
It will look awesome on the Sport Red!!
Black Beauty 08-10-2006, 07:10 AM SoCal, I see you have a trim ring around your display/sample piece, How`s about making those. That`s what I want. The chrome rope stuff just does not turn out right, tried it & removed it. Never got used to the seam.

Yet another option for blacking out taillaights... http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/hrc_f3/album?.dir=2db9re2&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/ph//my_photos
I also did a kind of (picture) 'how-to' on removal/installation.
The pic's don't really do this film justice. It truely is darker than it appears due to the sun shining right on the tint in my garage.
The *only* advantage of using this material is that it can be removed (without destroying anything)- should it ever need to be.
SoCalHHR 08-10-2006, 01:05 PM It's always very difficult to use film on a smaller surface wih compund curves; like the HHR taillights!
Also, using the tint on your BU lights cuts down rear visibility at night.
Bud left the center area open on his, allowing all the white backup light to shine through.

I would venture to guess he got it on eBay. HERE (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHEVROLOET-HHR-EMBLEM-DECALS-SET-OF-2-CLASSIC-LETTERING_W0QQitemZ220015862283QQihZ012QQcategoryZ 50447QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) is one that looks similar to it, if not the same. :thumb:
