Hey folks I need some info. We're thinking of moving out of Fl to the south east part of TN. We don't know anything about TN and was wondering if anyone living there can tell us something about the area. I have a brother who lives up in Madison, TN and a sister in law who lives in the north west of NC so we thought the SE part of TN would be a good compromise between the two family members. Does TN have a state income tax and if so, does it apply to retirement income? How about property, cost, taxes, insurance, etc.? What about auto insurance and that sort of thing. We here in Florida have these wonderful hurricanes to deal with, does TN have the wrath of mother nature in any form? We're not worried about schools since we no longer have school age children. We would also prefer to live somewhere out in the country, out side of the city limits. We want at least an acre so we can have a big shop like I have now. Any info you can give us would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dan

I went in search of some info for you and came up with THIS (http://www.tennesseeanytime.org/move/index.html) site that explains a few things in general about Tennessee. Looks like some of the info you might need is on the site. :thumb:

Thanks Deb, we also found this info. But if you read through this stuff it's like a double tongue snake, lots of contradiction. I would like to hear from people who actually live there cause they know the drill...Thanks :)

I have two relatives who live in Memphis and Nashville and all I can tell you for sure is that TN does NOT have a State Income Tax. I do know they make that up with the sales tax but considering I am from MS with a 7.5% sales tax it does not seem so bad that TN has a 8% sales tax (guessing on the actual number but I know its close to MS). As far as the other stuff your best bet would be to get on the internet and check them out.

We've done all the internet stuff and I hate to say it but Tennessee's info is real contradictory at best....LOL

I've read that their sales tax is about 7% and I can live with that. But there are many unknowns...LOL

My Wife and I moved our family up here from Florida 2 years ago. We absolutly love it here in Tennessee. The weather is incredible, pace of life is slower, and living is much easier here. The air is clean and you can actually drink the tap water. We live just south of Nashville, so I can't tell you much about the Chattanooga area, other than, there is some beautiful scenery around that part of Tennessee. As stated above, we have no state income tax, property taxes here are nothing compared to Florida, insurance here is much less $$ than Florida, both auto and home coverage here is less than what we were paying in Florida just for our auto insurance.
Simply put, living here is much easier than what we had in Florida. Don't get me wrong, I was born and raised in Tampa Bay, and lived there for most of my life, so I will always love Florida. I just don't want to live there anymore...

My Sister and her family are actually in the process of moving up here too. Labor Day weekend is the big move date for them. I'de be glad to help you with any info you may need, just let me know what I can do to help.

I flew over Tennessee once. Just once. Although I am Boston area born and bred, my heart is in Florida. Don't give it up!

I lived in Nashville for 10 years and my hometown is Dalton, GA, which is about 30 miles South of Chattanooga, TN. I used to own a cabin by the river outside of Gatlinburg, TN.

You'll get nothing but praise about TN from me, especially central and eastern. El Guapo pretty much hit on all of the financial benefits and the beauty of the area. There is nothing like Fall in TN, NC, and North GA!

I came out here to get away from the music establishment in Nashville for a while, but I'll be home soon. Probably back home to GA since I have my old family land there, but I wouldn't mind going back to Nashville either.

I live about 30 miles northeast of Chattanooga, moved here 8 years ago from southern California. There is no state income tax, car licensing is cheap cheap cheap. Some counties have a wheel tax but I don't know exactly how much I just know Rhea county doesn't have one and my vanity plates cost me $50 a year. I have been watching the doppler radar for most of the last 8 years and the area around us seems to have a shield that goes up whenever the nasties come in from the west, actually it's the Cumberland Plateau...lol
There are areas that seem to get worse weather than others but all in all the climate here is very mild, we get a little of everything but none of the bad stuff hangs around long. Tornadoes seem to go north and south of us but are much fewer than in other parts of the country, west of the Cumberland Plateau gets more severe weather than just east of it.
Property is pretty well priced but then again my reference is California so things here are about one fourth of what they are there, you will have to check with individual counties for tax rates but it is pretty low in Rhea. I can't comment on auto insurance because my other half did a no no almost 5 years ago and ours has been pretty high (almost over YAY!) but I would imagine still lower than FL which I assume is close to CA in cost of living.
There is nothing that would get me to move voluntarily away from this gorgeous part of Tennessee and I would only go back to CA kicking and screaming and I was born and raised there and had never lived anywhere else until I came here.

Thanks for the info, like you I love Florida but we're just getting tired of being raped on insurance, home taxes and that sort of thing. I'm originally from Hawaii and moved to Florida many years ago because back then Florida was very affordable, but things have really changed over the years. I've been to Chattanooga and Dalton, GA many years ago and it is pretty country. I have a brother that lives near Nashville in a town called Madison, he loves it up there. I'll drop you a PM as things develope, I may pick your brain some more. Thanks again, Dan

Thanks for the info. We're not real picky as far as the house goes and would consider a large manufactured home. We want at least an acre, we like to have lots of leg room. We want a place with enough property to build a shop on. My current shop is 25x35 and has three bay's, one with a 4 post lift. The house has to have at least 3 beedrooms and two baths. -Dan

There's a bunch of lower cost housing in the Kingsport/Church Hill are if you want to come up that far (about 100 miles east of Knoxville). There's all kinds of farm land for sales in the area.

Well for us it's pretty laid back. We live in Mims just north of Titusville, it's pretty much country out here, heck, four cars in any one place is a traffic jam for us...LOL But your right, most of Florida is pretty hecktic. We even get some spill over from Daytona during Bikefest and that sort of thing, or when there's a shuttle launch.

Dan,

I have been here is SE TN for about 5 years...here's my :2cents:

No State Income tax
7% Sales w/ fairly low property taxes
weather is incredible!!!
cost of living is decent (gotta be careful not to get too close to Nashville / Memphis...growing VERY fast...housing gets a little high)

I live in Cleveland (20 miles north of Chattanooga and recommend it highly...seems to be a "settling" place for Floridians tired of rebuilding from storms. (Sold my house to folks from Florida back in December...new neighbors are also from FL). Located near Rock City / Ruby Falls / Ocoee whitewater.....(can you tell I LOVE it here????)

I would also suggest looking around Maryville, TN. 20 minutes from Knoxville, 20 minutes from Gatlinburg (Smokey Mountains /great Rod runs)
Either location is excellent...great hospitals / shopping / recreation

From Chattanooga to Knoxville, anywhere along I-75, US 11, US 411, or US 27 would be great....:welcome: :welcome:

I may know him, or at least his dad. I spent 10 years in advertising at Shaw Industries before I went into the music business so I know a lot of carpet people.

I have lived all over... GA, TN, FL, MO, AR, TX, CA... and after I left Dallas, I said I would NEVER live outside of GA, TN, or NC. Then I screwed up and moved to CA but that was a music business thing. I'm glad I met my wife but I really don't like living in CA. She wants to move back to Dalton with me too. I could live in Nashville again easily, but Dalton is home and it is also some of the prettiest country I have ever seen in all of my travels. TN does have the benefit of no state income tax but Dalton is close enough that you can actually work in Chattanooga if you want to. I'm ready to get back home!

I don't know his dad's name but their last name is Barnes. They sold cascade carpets about 10 - 12 years ago. My friend is Bill Barnes and he's married to Vickie, he's been driving trucks for a local company now since they sold the carpet business. I've been to Dalton and it is nice country. I have family farther south in the Jonesboro (sp), Riverdale area. I'm retired so working isn't an issue, I'm never going to punch a clock again. This is one of our reasons for relocating, we need to stretch our fixed income and living here in Florida isn't going to work the way costs are rising. I do operate a singning / notary out of my home for some extra income, but I can do this anywhere.

I may know him, or at least his dad. I spent 10 years in advertising at Shaw Industries before I went into the music business so I know a lot of carpet people.

Hey Dan,

Kathy and I were really itching to make the Biltmore Bash and planned on making it since day one. But when our 1,000.00 insurance bill arrived with an increase to 3200.00 that killed any plans for travel. This is one of the major reasons we've decided to relocate out of Florida. It's tough for folks like us on a retirement fixed income to handle an increase in anything, but to triple an already expensive annual expense just drops us to our knees. This is one of the reasons you haven't seen me posting any new mods to my HHR....I can't afford any...LOL

I used to have a friend named Butch Barnes. His dad's name was Bill. I don't know if it is the same one or not. They lived right down the street from me 30 years ago but moved when I was about 12.

Gas prices here are about the same as yours. As far as having any luck goes we've requested information on several properties all around the Chatanooga area. But communication is kinda slow on some of them. We still haven't put our house on the market yet since we have some minor painting and other things to do. We think it's going to be tough to sell at this point. There is a glut of property for sale down hear and our's being in the 250 - 300k price bracket it may take a while. But we have decided we are going to move. -Dan
