View Full Version : Photo Contest???
Kwhopper89 08-17-2006, 05:40 PM I did a quick search - but didn't find any info regarding Photo Contests...
At the SSRfanatic site - we try to have a monthly photo contest - with the intent that we produce a calendar with the winners!
The 2006 calendar (had two of my images!) was VERY popular...
The mods set up a submission thread and then enable voting after 10 images are entered!
What do ya think???
en0oNmAI 08-17-2006, 05:59 PM I think it would be cool. Lots of people here can photochop pretty good. Like SoCal Mike and his background images!
courthousedeb 08-17-2006, 06:09 PM I think the images should be an HHR from someone on the forum, rather than something that is photoshopped. It would take some doing to get one together for 2007, but it would be cool to be able to show it to friends and family and tell them what you know about the history of each HHR and their owner. Maybe use the Featured HHR of the Month for the 12 months and put Mike's HHR on the front cover of the Inagural calendar. Perhaps we could get 12 Chevrolet dealers to sponsor the project and help defray some of the cost of publishing an annual calendar.
Here I go...typing as I think. Look forward to hearing what others think of this idea as well. :thumb:
captain howdy 08-17-2006, 06:27 PM Good idea but there are too many people that http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c122/amarini/kissbutt.gif on this site. The voting wouldn't be fair and unbiased unless only the admin and mods could vote. ;) People would vote for their favorite people rather than the actual best pics and HHRs.
SIHHR 08-17-2006, 07:38 PM Well we can have a popular vote, then a mod/admin suggestion, then based off the suggestion then a final vote. 12 Cars for each month for 07, The Cover Page would also be one of the months, and th back of it could be random shots of different things. CJ's Shaggy allready got my vote. Its one of the first HHr's that was posted two tone and he did plenty of work to it. I know CH would would agree with me that there is plenty of work/detail done to his ride in a respecting way.
HHR PNOY 08-17-2006, 07:40 PM Good idea but there are too many people that http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c122/amarini/kissbutt.gif on this site. The voting wouldn't be fair and unbiased unless only the admin and mods could vote. ;) People would vote for their favorite people rather than the actual best pics and HHRs.
amen.
Wackaloon 08-17-2006, 07:45 PM OK, the question seems to be, do we want a "fav car" contest or a "best photo of an HHR" contest. The "fav car" would IMO have to be several photos to get the "full" impact. The "best photo" would be just that, subject matter immaterial (except it must be of an HHR), selection based on how ell the actual image rings your chimes <heh>

i think the ride of the month sorta promotes the site and mods that we can do, a photo contest would be one pic, no descriptions
Holmes Hot Ride 08-17-2006, 08:15 PM The Photo calender sounds okay. I am like Ch on the fvavorite of anything on a forum. It seems to always be based on the popularity of that person at the time.
Wackaloon 08-17-2006, 08:18 PM One way of dealing with the issue of "popularity" is to submit photos to a special Gallery page and have the mods/admin type folk remove the poster's name/sig/etc. In theory that would make the images "anonymous" and they could then be considered on their merits.
captain howdy 08-17-2006, 08:20 PM We all know what each others HHRs look like.
crowbar 08-17-2006, 08:20 PM In theory that would make the images "anonymous" and they could then be considered on their merits.
we all know what everyones car looks like though
quick draw ch beat me to it
JimZ_HHR 08-17-2006, 08:25 PM shouldnt the contest be based not on 'mods' done... but on best picture... taking in account photo quality, i.e use of background, placement of HHR , lighting etc..... if you want to put them in a calendar... you could have a Slammin HHR... but a crappy picture
SindyDix 08-17-2006, 08:40 PM Only Mod's or Admin would vote? Oh goodie, I vote for me!
en0oNmAI 08-17-2006, 08:56 PM By the photochop comment I mean for the cover. You could have someone make a collage (sp) of some of the people in the calendar and maybe some not in it just to show some variety. Maybe do something artistic like put 4 or so HHR's in a Andy Warhol style image. Maybe not. Just my :2cents:
cj krause 08-17-2006, 09:32 PM we all know what everyones car looks like
this quote is inaccurate and a large assumption
you have a sense, just a sense, of what the HHRs look like, and i dont care whose HHR it is, but no one knows what anyone else's ride looks like till you see it in person. the color of the blue on my car that was stock does not even look the same as original.
pictures taken by individuals can not begin to really show what a HHR looks like that has been custom painted or custom flamed with real paint and not a decal.
even decals dont really show well on pics.
the average owner can not afford the kind of equipment needed to show showroom quality pics of custom paint work.
if you look at HHR of the month on this forum,,, popularity has not been the theme, most modded has not been the theme
if you want a fair shot for all, then the only true way is to make a list of standards to be set and used for the judges to judge on and a rating for each.
set a # of pics and what needs to be shown in the pics. that way all have the same pics of their HHRs
to make it fair, one must level the judging field and grounds to which they are judged.
one reason i dont enter participant judged car shows is this popularity. some shows that are participant judged only let you vote on 25% of the total classes and you cant vote on your own. club members cant vote for other club members even if in different classes. this is one that is fair and if i can i enter her car shows. it is fair.
having criteria is the only fair way to do anything w ratings for each criteria
SindyDix 08-17-2006, 09:39 PM I agree with having criteria. However, we are just home town folk that wanna look at HHR's. It's not complicated! We just want to look at HHR's!
I think a few just want to throw together a fun calendar and see what happens!
I'll place an order for a 2007 calendar, I don't care if they are show pieces or not.
JimZ_HHR 08-17-2006, 09:43 PM I agree with having criteria. However, we are just home town folk that wanna look at HHR's. It's not complicated! We just want to look at HHR's!

Ditto, I really dont care how modded out your HHR is.... some photos could just be a Plain Jane HHR, but the photo taken with a very creative or interesting background or foreground, props etc...
BlackHHR 08-17-2006, 09:44 PM Ditto, I really dont care how modded out your HHR is.... some photos could just be a Plain Jane HHR, but the photo taken with a very creative or interesting background or foreground, props etc...

I'm the opposite. I don't care how good the picture is if the HHR is bone stock I have no desire to look at it. There are more that enough photos of plain everyday HHRs in this world. They should all be custom in one way or another or shouldn't even be allowed to enter. :2cents:
SindyDix 08-17-2006, 09:49 PM I swing both ways on this! I like 'em all!
JESSE 08-17-2006, 09:50 PM Even if a contest does not come about, a Chevyhhr.net calender with ALL the members HHR'S would be koooooool.
BlackHHR 08-17-2006, 09:51 PM I'm the opposite. I don't care how good the picture is if the HHR is bone stock I have no desire to look at it. There are more that enough photos of plain everyday HHRs in this world. They should all be custom in one way or another or shouldn't even be allowed to enter. :2cents:
Well I don't want to see your HHR in there then.
SindyDix 08-17-2006, 09:52 PM That would be quite a challenge! Who's up for that one!
There will be 128 HHR's on each page! Cool!
dbarberaz 08-17-2006, 09:58 PM I like the idea and if there is one I am sure I will buy, but my questions is should someone like me waste are time is summiting a photo? Chances are no because I do not have the cash to spend on lowing kits, big $$ rims and tires or even a killer sound system. Some of us can only do samll things to make them our own and a little diffrent my timy list of "mods" are listed below. So back to my questions, should someone like me even waste are time, or would the "votes" be based on how many mods and money was spent? I agree not everyone wants to see all "plain jane" hhr's but not everyone wants to see a bunch of hhr's all slammed to the ground and a new intake. Remember there all not a lot of things we can do to them as of right now.
One thing that no matter what is done, limit the cars to only 2006 model year, and then the "first year" owners have a little something to so
Ok I will walk over to my corner and let the bashing of me begin
SIHHR 08-17-2006, 10:02 PM shouldnt the contest be based not on 'mods' done... but on best picture... taking in account photo quality, i.e use of background, placement of HHR , lighting etc..... if you want to put them in a calendar... you could have a Slammin HHR... but a crappy picture
I agree with JimZ_HHR. Background, lighting, location does play a role. No Parking lot pix or just on a field
SIHHR 08-17-2006, 10:03 PM Only Mod's or Admin would vote? Oh goodie, I vote for me!
You cant vote for you. But if you pay me, then I will vote for you

i agree with this also but a forum calendar would be something most folks here would want their car in so i think this is where the compitition will come into play, also the ones that will pay for the calendar will want a say so in what would be in it as well. remember theres only 12 months in the year
BlackHHR 08-17-2006, 10:15 PM agreed
Remember we have a lot of years left in us.LOL
HHR PNOY 08-17-2006, 10:28 PM here's an idea....gather up good pics of meets that happened in the past year. Combine that and make a calendar out of it. If people cant make it to weekend meets try to meet up at a nice place to take pics on a saturday (three or more HHRs) and submit that pic before November of this year. There are a couple more big meets happening this year so that can also be included in the calendar.Doing this will at least give regulars a chance to get their HHR in the calendar, modded or stock.
Harpozep 08-18-2006, 12:59 AM I like the calendar idea.
I've got the photogear, so if anyone wants to fly me and my family out to there area, I'll shoot em for free!
Perhaps we should limit the entries only to character themes:

http://www.pbase.com/harpozep/image/59905691.jpg
http://www.pbase.com/harpozep/image/59888546/large.jpg
I know I have them posted elsewhere, but that was back in May, and as others have pointed out in their threads, it is dead around here tonight:D
If I can help in any way with a calendar, let me know:D
riverwind 08-18-2006, 10:02 AM I think the general idea is a good one.
We just need to decide on whether it is a PHOTO contest, or just the coolest calendar we can produce.
Granted, some people are going to vote on a particular image because they like the photo, some will vote on a partuclar image because they like the hhr, some because they like the owner.
Preventing these biases is going to be impossible. I think the idea is a good one I think we should focus (pun intended) :D on the rules, requirements etc. about the precess and the entries.
As someone who has limitations on what mods I can do/have done I understand that also most people will have limitations on what equipment or what experiences they can bring to producing the photo itself. Such is life. We all have our limitations and prejudices.
Although I’m an ex-commercial photographer, I have a stock HHR. I MAY have an advantage over some folks because of my experience, but I have nothing special to shoot. A couple of attempts at equalizing might be using available light only (no studio strobes etc.) and no PhotoShop’ed images. Just a suggestion.
So, is this about the mods, the photo, or the HHR?
courthousedeb 08-18-2006, 10:22 AM I think it should be about the HHR and the setting of the pictures. And I'm sure since it would be our forum calendar, we could put a link to the forum in strategic locations throughout the calendar. Maybe sell them on eBay and attract others to the site as well.
Here I go thinking out loud again.
crowbar 08-18-2006, 10:35 AM So, is this about the mods, the photo, or the HHR?
...
Kwhopper89 08-18-2006, 10:40 AM WOW - I started this thread and have generated some great comments!!!
My idea was a "photography" contest - just make sure your image has an HHR in it! There already is a HHR of the month - usually a heavy modded HHR. So, for the rest of us that don't do too many mods - this will give us a chance to shine! (An ocassional "Photoshop" contest thrown in works for those that like to manipulate images!!!)
Themes for the monthly contests would be good. We do need to plan ahead so that we can get the images needed for a particular month. (Fall colors - Halloween images - snow shots -spring wildflowers - etc)
KISS rules apply - Keep It Simple ....
There are enough members here that even if I were to vote for only my 'friends' HHR every month - there would certainly be enough different opinions that the premier image would win.
I like the idea of a Gallery folder for each month - with perhaps a voting thread established when enough images are uploaded - or a deadline has been reached...
Thanks for the ideas and input - lets see what we can do!
en0oNmAI 08-18-2006, 10:56 AM So shots like this would be neat. Not just one HHR but a few!

too bad there wasnt a 49 Sub or 49 pickup in the pic
scaleguy 08-18-2006, 11:59 AM I like the calendar idea, pick the pic on the simplest terms, cool pic of an HHR, look at the pics yeshua posted of "Bob" in St. Louis very cool with the main focus being an HHR. I could get into a "contest" like that...if the mods don't want to pick, appoint a committee...Oh and please make it a "No Whining" zone!!!
SindyDix 08-18-2006, 12:38 PM have a halloween sandwich. :thumb:

SindyDix 08-18-2006, 10:52 PM I like the multi HHR's in a single photo! We'll get more bang for our buck in that calander. Not just 12 of 'em!
BlackHHR 08-18-2006, 10:54 PM I'll see about getting a good group shot of the 4 or 5 HHR's we'll have in the criuse weekend car show thats coming up soon.
dbarberaz 08-18-2006, 10:57 PM I like the multi HHR's in a single photo! We'll get more bang for our buck in that calander. Not just 12 of 'em!
I agree Sindy I thin it was HHR PONY brought up the idea of doing group photos. I am sure there has been enough meet ups that a full calander could be done. Then could even have the center of the calander be a bunch of smaller photos from everyone that sends in a photo.
Just another idea, and back to the corner.
HHR PNOY 08-18-2006, 11:04 PM thanks for recognizing that dbarberaz! Why only have 12 single HHRs on the calendar if we can have most of the member cars in there instead? Modded or not, attend a meet or do a saturday lunch and take nice pics. You can get more calendars sold if the person buying the calendar has a pic of their HHR in it.
cj krause 08-18-2006, 11:06 PM we had 11 at whole hawg and i am hoping for 16+ at the Yank and Crank Rally/Poker Run on the 26th and more at kellers. i am hoping we get around 20
