View Full Version : no plug wires/ alt pulley?
upOnGamE 09-26-2006, 04:28 PM Well i went to the chevyrolet parts dept at the dealer to ask about related part numbers to see what we can use from the old ecotecs/cobalts well to my amazement they told me that our cars do not have an Altornator pulley or spark plug wires can anyone explain this to me?
well the coil sits on top of the spark plugs on a 2.4 so I guess you dont have any plug wires...I dunno about the pulleys.

SindyDix 09-26-2006, 08:01 PM Wll look at you JB1! You gots all the fancies from SoCalHHR's! Looks great!
flyhhr 09-26-2006, 08:06 PM msd has made a kit where you can put wires and a coil and a distributor on the ecotech motors
flyhhr 09-26-2006, 08:11 PM There is a pulley but not a aftermarket pulley.

Uhm........that's the pic SoCal posted. If I remember corectly JB1s HHR is black.
upOnGamE 09-27-2006, 04:11 AM Uh no according to the chevy parts department we do not have an alternator pulley only a generator is what he said
-md- HHR 09-27-2006, 06:20 AM There is a pulley but not a aftermarket pulley.
I agree 100%. There is a pulley how in the hell would the alternator turn then.
upOnGamE 09-27-2006, 06:21 AM can you find me the part number because i want to do a cross search with a 2002 cavlier's alt pulley if it exsist i am just going by what the guy told me dont want to feel dumb
WHITEHHR1 09-27-2006, 07:59 AM there is a pulley but you cannot buy it separatley you have to buy the alternator
Uhm........that's the pic SoCal posted. If I remember corectly JB1s HHR is black.
I was just using that for reference

I can do you one better. As very few of you know I design alternator and crank pulleys for cavaliers, aleros, grand ams, sunfires, HHR ;), malibu's, sunbirds, and others.
To the best of my knowlege from 95-06 all LD9, LN2, 2.2 ecotecs share the same alternator pulley. All are 5 ribbed pulleys that take 5K belts. Also I have not proven yet, but I think all 4.3L vortecs have the same alternator pulley as well. REF. (http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=2&i=363837&t=363837)
upOnGamE 09-27-2006, 04:04 PM so then this should work on our cars right? also how much shorter do we need the belt to be if any? http://www.sfxperformance.com/parts/AEM237500C.htm
-md- HHR 09-27-2006, 06:27 PM For the link you posted you will need a longer belt. That pulley was designed to be used in comination with an underdrive pulley.
flyhhr 09-27-2006, 06:30 PM Your looking for a after maket pulley I would not change the pulley you will have a problem charging your battery. Just so you know there is not a aftermarket alt. I heard it was wired as a sqaure and not a circle so you can not get a high output alt.
en0oNmAI 09-27-2006, 07:18 PM Only thing you would have to worry about with the alternator pulley would be if you had a major system. These have been used for a long time. The only time your alternator wouldn't make much power is at idle. I would suggest using the AEM pulley in conjunction with a crank pulley.
upOnGamE 09-27-2006, 08:50 PM do you have a link for their pulley en0o
-md- HHR 09-28-2006, 10:19 AM do you have a link for their pulley en0o
You already posted one link....
upOnGamE 09-28-2006, 10:23 AM but you said that one wont work do you have the specific link to our cars?
en0oNmAI 09-28-2006, 11:02 AM The one you posted is the right one for the Eco's. -md- HHR was just saying you would need to get an underdrive pulley AND the alternator pulley you listed to use the stock belt. The underdrive is smaller and alt one is a little bigger but also lightweight so you can keep the stock belt and not have to worry about sizing issues.
upOnGamE 09-28-2006, 11:07 AM damn now i have to find an underdrive pulley then for the crank i really wanted to go with the lighten pulley from zpec so do you know where there would be a underdriven pulley for our car?
upOnGamE 09-28-2006, 11:12 AM i also looked for the MSD ingnition kit that they were talking about and couldn't find that either links are very helpful when saying they have things thank you
en0oNmAI 09-28-2006, 11:12 AM look for almost any 2.2 Ecotec underdrive pulley. It should work just the same. The guys at www.ecotecforum.com could probably help you out too!
en0oNmAI 09-28-2006, 11:14 AM If you have a 2.4 that means you have a coil on plug ignition and unless you start doing some MAJOR mods like forced induction and high nitrous shots then you don't need anything for the ignition setup from msd.
flyhhr 09-28-2006, 07:53 PM her is some of what i was talking about http://www.msdignition.com/sci_19.htm
en0oNmAI 09-28-2006, 10:42 PM Ok flyhhr but... the first line says "when an ECOTEC is being built for drag racing..." Unless you are going to make your HHR an all out drag car (turbo, standalone computer, slicks, MAJOR horsepower in the 300+ range) then this is not even close to being a necessity. The stock ignition system is more then adequate.
flyhhr 09-28-2006, 11:12 PM I am not saying do it. I was just letting people know you can change it. MSD does make stuff for the ecotec. This person was looking for aftermarket pulley for is alt. I don't think that is a good idea but people are trying to give him help. So I was giving him info on the msd stuff if he needed.
flyhhr 09-29-2006, 10:31 PM here is your site i found for you so you can get your pulley if you have a 2.2 http://www.crateenginedepot.com/store/Ecotec-Billet-Crankshaft-Pulley-88958631-P330C144.aspx
-md- HHR 06-11-2008, 07:13 AM The one you posted is the right one for the Eco's. -md- HHR was just saying you would need to get an underdrive pulley AND the alternator pulley you listed to use the stock belt. The underdrive is smaller and alt one is a little bigger but also lightweight so you can keep the stock belt and not have to worry about sizing issues.
By doing this you are under driving the crank with a smaller pulley.
Under driving the alternator with a smaller pulley.
So you you REALLY under driving the alternator with both.
HHorange 06-13-2008, 10:56 PM Did no one else catch the fact that the Parts guy said no alternator pulley just generator............Don't look now but we don't have a generator. However I have found in the past that GM tends to call the alternator a generator. I guess old habits are hard to break.....
Ask to see the parts break down screen on the parts computer..... I'll bet you find the generator pulley is actually the alternator pulley......
Just my $.02
Hotrodbob 06-16-2008, 01:05 AM Ok, I like to mod my cars too, but for what you will spend in labor and parts what do you think you will get from all this? 3-4 HP? That is very expensive power. You already have crank fire computer controlled spark and an alternator that turns as it needs... Say does the water pump run off this same belt?
-md- HHR 06-16-2008, 06:56 AM By doing this you are under driving the crank with a smaller pulley.
Under driving the alternator with a larger pulley.
So you you REALLY under driving the alternator with both.
Fixed my mess up.
