Who says slow news days don't yield surprises? Moments ago, we received the GM press materials announcing the all-new HHR Panel. At first, we assumed it was a SEMA thing, but lo and behold, this is an actual production car, and GM is to be commended. Unlike other panel concepts we've seen in the past, such as the Chrysler Panel Cruiser, the HHR Panel does not see the removal of its second set of doors.

Instead, the passenger doors are replaced by solid cargo doors that open via a dashboard release button. This provides easy access to the cargo area, which features a flat load floor and over 57 cubic feet of space...

I see the grooves where the back doors usually are. That mean those back door panels are still going to open?
Look at the other pics on the Autoblog site. They show them open.

The buttons on the steering wheel are different than those on the 06 models, is that the way they come now on 07s, or has this one been custom fitted? Notice the "mute" button is located in a much better spot!

The rear cargo area should be dropped all the way to the floor...it still looks like the seats are folded down, space wise. Remove it all together, down to the spare area and really make use of that space

I'd have to have one for my small business...wrapped or with decals

Hell, I wanna start a small business just as an excuse to trade up!

Why do the interiors in this picture (http://www.autoblog.com/media/2006/10/x07ct_hr007.jpg) and this picture (http://www.autoblog.com/media/2006/10/x07ct_hr004.jpg) still have the four power window switches?

Or are those the "dashboard release buttons" used to open the rear doors (since I don't see anything else on those dash pics that look like they would open the rear doors)?

Hey I use mine for my business. The HHR is perfect for me. I sometimes do worry about the windows getting hit by a speaker stand or something.

Go GM!!

By the way anyone see the new GM commercial? Darn Sunburst Orange always in the GM commercials.

I think the point was to give you a level floor height.

:( i was hoping it would be a full panel design. it's a let down for me. seems like a half hearted attemped to make a panel. what gm would save in glass and trim would pay for the tooling. i'm still looking for operational liftgate glass!:thumbsdow

You know, we have been working on a panel idea for a while (our concept for SEMA '07), and one of the things that keeps coming up is access to the back. I think GM addressed this perfectly by keeping the functional side doors, as we will be ripping that "storage bin" deal right out to make room for hidden subs. Once the subs are in place, a lowered flooring will be installed allowing us a sort of dropped "shelf" behind the seats where smaller boxes can be stacked without worrry of them sliding all around the back. Without side doors you would have to climb into the back to fish through any items towards the front.

I like the "door" idea! :thumb:

There is no way that removing those minor things would pay for that amount of re-tooling. It's surprising enough that they created some new body panels for the panel van version.

I just agree that's what Big Jim was saying. I agree with you that it what they would be saving probably wouldn't be enough for new tooling. Not to mention it is easy to build them on the same line the way Chevy is doing it currently. I'm sure a one piece side would cause production problems to their current line.

The rear cargo area should be dropped all the way to the floor...it still looks like the seats are folded down, space wise. Remove it all together, down to the spare area and really make use of that space

I'll second this - I really like the idea of a panel version, and I like the way the exterior looks (though I like the black and gray two-tone better than the red - does a better job of hiding the cut lines for the rear doors).

When I heard "panel van" I was really hoping for something with a taller cargo space. I want something that will carry my bike mounted upright (standing with the front wheel removed). It won't quite fit in my wife's HHR, so I was hoping for more room here.

This thing is pointless. No reason to buy one unless your a business and need the side panels for a sign. I love the HHR, but GM should have done it properly - suicide doors in the back, not the regular doors minus windows. Its dumb. Great for GM though, i.e. this was the cheap way to do a panel. Now GM if your listening, give us an HHR pickup! El camino for the new milenio! (that was the only way I could make it rhyme!)

The Panel is sweet looking. It is coming march/april that is from chevy rep. at the NAIAS in Detriot. the two front compartments in the load floor can be eqipped with locks that comes from the info brochure. But at the show it was all locked up so u could get inside of it. Yet the Premier Edition was wide open. The Panel has a special badge on the back of it instead of the HHR it has HHR with Panel written below it. Sorry the stud with the socalhhrs.com shirt is not included with the panel HHR.

I can think of a few reasons to buy the panel.... ;)

Reason no. 1. Lay down a mattress....;) That gives a whole new meaning to Shaggin' Wagon.

Reason No. 2. Can you think about how much money you'd make, Haulin' sh** around???

I'll let you think of the rest.

GDZHHR- Yes, my thoughts as well.. I still would like to see/sit in, & drive one... B4 I jump..

I'm in no hurry, as we're seeing running changes as time passes.
Maybe I'll wait, & grab one that someone bought & didn't bond with..
So I can get a more loaded Panel for less $$$..(we'll see)..

Still test driving as my time permits. 11 different HHR's to date..:steering: :steering: :steering: :steering: :steering: :steering: :steering: :steering: :steering: :steering: :steering:

Is that Canadian Dollar Prices??

Yes, that link above references Canadian dollars. I can only imagine folks in the US reading $19,480 and going "Holy @#$%@!!!"

In any case, the price represents a $260 increase from the base price of an LS model. :thumb:

I went on the Karl Chevrolet Web Site and was able to build and price the panel with all options, packages shown with cost.
The base LT panel is $18005 plus $590 Destination. I priced out 3 different configurations of options I wanted and totals varied from low of $22329 to high of $ 24009. this doen't take into consideration of the incintives that are available, but gives me a starting point to negotiate from.

I bet there are loads of small companies looking at the panel and wondering, "When is this thing going to be shipped?".

Couriers (not FedEx - smaller ones), surveyors, anyone with light cargo. It'll be perfect!:thumb:

It'll also give GM something "eco-friendly" to point at...

Eventhough I'm not getting the Panel, my HHR will be used for my Home Inspection Business. All of my equipment that my full size chevy K-1500 PU has been haulin will easily fit into the HHR. Including my 2 folding ladders.:thumb:

Good review…

I really liked the last comment comparing the Panel to the E-Series and Sprinter. The capabilities of those vehicles far exceed the needs of many consumers, and while there are other options (cargo versions of the Caravan) none have the style of the panel!

You might snicker when I mention style, but I bet there are lots of companies who will appreciate having a utilitarian vehicle that doesn’t look like the box they are delivering!

But the Caravan will carry a lot more cargo also. The HHR Panel will (should) be a hit to small delivery companies that never carry a big load (or at least for a vehicle or two).

Good case in point, the wife went to a baby shower in NC this past weekend. The stuff we gave to the two "to-be" mothers would have never fit in the back of the HHR Panel, much less still carry a child in a car seat in the back seat of a regular model. She was loaded (but chould still see out the back window) and the MPV is not even an extended length.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply a comparison between the Caravan (cargo version) and the Panel. I just wanted to point out that there aren't that many choices for the commercial buyer when it comes to cargo vehicles.
