Caught during some shake down laps at the Nürburgring test track, the 2008 Chevrolet HHR SS looks headed for showrooms soon. With more power from a turbocharged engine and various suspension tweaks, the HHR Super Sport should offer solid performance to go along with its retro looks.
Although Chevrolet has yet to confirm the existence of the HHR SS, a recent article in Automotive News quoted a Chevrolet spokesperson who said the company is looking to give HHR buyers more options. We suspect that option will come in the form of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with roughly 260 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Essentially the same motor used in the current Pontiac Solstice GXP and Saturn Sky Red Line, the direct-injection 2.0-liter is stuffed full of advanced technology like dual-cam phasing and a twin-scroll turbocharger.
Judging by the way it was circling the Nürburgring test track, the HHR SS has also received substantial suspension tuning. Expect the usual upgrades like thicker sway bars, retuned struts and a revised version of the standard model's electric power steering system. Four-wheel disc brakes will be part of the package as well. Larger wheels and tires are a sure thing, too, but we doubt the five-spoke wheels shown in our spy photos are the final production pieces.
If there's one thing that won't change much it's the HHR's appearance. Already blessed with bulging fenders from the factory, the SS version looks as though it will maintain most of the standard version's sheet metal. The sole exception comes up front as this prototype was fitted with a deep front airdam and a mesh grille for improved air flow.
Look for the debut of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR SS early next year with sales beginning by the fall.

You can see how the front end is starting to come together.
A single grille bar spanning left to right a little above center...
over as mentioned before the mesh grille.

O6ChevyHHR 11-15-2006, 02:59 PM how much you think this will cost??
MOTRV8D 11-15-2006, 04:47 PM how much you think this will cost??
well since it was $3000 more for an SS Camaro than a Z28, I'm figuring similary for the HHR SS. So right now, a fully-loaded MSRP of a 2LT goes around $24K...
a new loaded HHR SS will prolly sticker around $27K. Im talkin loaded here, not base price.
Add a "Dealer Premium" of anywhere around $3K additional, and you have a sticker around $30K when they first come out.
My Prediction: dealers and private parties will be buying them up at first and selling them on eBay and I would not be surprised to see them auctioning for around $35-40K on there. :cussing:
Thats exactly what happened when the C6 Z06's first came out. Yeah you could get one... for EIGHTY-FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!!
This is just a guess, of course. I'm hoping they'll be somewhat less, as I plan to be in the market for a new car next fall and yeah, I could see me driving a new HHR SS! :D
O6ChevyHHR 11-16-2006, 09:12 AM around $35-40K  :cussing: :cussing: :cussing: :cussing:
O6ChevyHHR 11-16-2006, 09:13 AM i hope for it to be 25,000

Nice photoshop job! But I've got a feeling, based on the spy photos, that Chevy is testing that SS concept with a single grille bar with a mesh grille behind...
http://www.chidesigners.com/hosting/HHR_SPY/08SSR.jpg
see if you can drop THAT in... in Photoshop! :D
HHR Forever 11-16-2006, 07:36 PM Worthy of trading in my new Camaro? No. Worthy of trading in my current HHR for the SS? Of course!! Maybe. I don't know, I may miss the one I have now.
JonyyB 11-16-2006, 07:42 PM Cobalt SS Supercharged is $21-25K so the HHR SS will be around there as well
i can't wait to see the production model!
O6ChevyHHR 11-16-2006, 08:10 PM I will make it a 1 bar tommarow! thats more like it 21-25k ~

hookupny 11-18-2006, 10:50 AM Shares the same engine as the Solstice GXP.
joesblackhhr 11-18-2006, 11:25 AM Shares the same engine as the Solstice GXP.
I hope that is so in one way; the "bugs" will hopefully be wrung out of that engine by the time it would be available in the HHR.. judging from the percentage of early purchasers problems posted on the board here ,I would like to be the first kid on the block with the SS HHR down here in my town but wouldnt want to be a beta tester..
O6ChevyHHR 11-18-2006, 02:57 PM I want to be the Kid with the two tone SS!
HHR Forever 11-18-2006, 03:15 PM I want a Suburban SS with a turbo-charged V10 and dual overhead cams!!
Z-Man 11-18-2006, 03:38 PM I think it would really be great if they would entend the HHr 12 " longer. So people the are 6'2" would have a little more space behind the wheel. It is not good for long trips if your tall. What do you think everyone.
:steering: :steering: :steering: :steering: :steering: :steering:
HHR Forever 11-18-2006, 05:46 PM I have no problem with it and I'm 6'5"
O6ChevyHHR 11-18-2006, 07:30 PM its a good idea, but I think there is plenty of room also~

The Suburban SS or the extended HHR thing?
O6ChevyHHR 11-20-2006, 09:55 AM :hhr:
shaginwgn 01-20-2007, 11:37 PM Talked to Chevy HHR rep at the detriot auto show(NAIAS), she said it would be out next year but followed quickly with if it makes it to production. My bet panel this year SS next year introduced.
O6ChevyHHR 01-21-2007, 10:24 AM caint wait to see both of them!
sleeper 01-23-2007, 12:46 AM how bout SS Panel
hhrcrafty 04-16-2007, 10:38 PM I'm beginning to wonder if the SS is really going to happen after all, what with Lutz saying they've "wasted" the SS badging on cars like the Malibu with a 240 hp twin-cam V6, sport suspension, seats, and tap-shift transmission. Nope, nothing "super" about that...
I figured we'd have seen the SS before we saw a factory panel, so I'm thinking it's either not going to happen at all, or we'll see the 2.0 supercharged Ecotec and it's not going to be called SS. I'm doubting we'll ever see the turbo DI Ecotec in any FWD domestic model from GM, too.
Harpozep 04-16-2007, 11:29 PM Well, what exactly is "SS" supposed to mean? When I grew up in the '60's and '70's, SS stood for Super Sport, which usually meant better handling and speed parts applied to the car. But not many cars had the SS attached to them.
Are we saying that today the SS badge is just bandied about too much, or that the cars that have the moniker do not deserve it?
I'd like that treatment to the HHR, but I don't care if it is badged as such. Heck, the "SS" badge cost more to insure back in the day. I'd like to avoid paying extra insurance for a badge.
O6ChevyHHR 05-16-2007, 07:52 PM have to wait and see, I have not even seen a panel down here in Naples yet..
