View Full Version : Installing running boards from a woman's viewpoint!
TCRNCOB 12-02-2006, 07:02 PM Well I am halfway done getting my running boards on.... ran out of daylight and bugs are eating me alive!!
Drivers side is on! I can't believe I did it by myself. It really was VERY easy after I figured out what each bolt was called.
This is after I pulled off the rocker panel, I still had to take out the clips under the doors.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m122/TCRNCOB/runningboards1.jpg
This is all the tools and parts (save for the boards themselves) I used.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m122/TCRNCOB/runningboards2.jpg
These are the brackets that the running boards sit on.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m122/TCRNCOB/runningboards7.jpg
This is all 3 brackets.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m122/TCRNCOB/runningboards8.jpg
End results!!! Running board just slides on and there are 3 bolts on the under side that slide into the brackets and tighten down.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m122/TCRNCOB/runningboards10.jpg
The written instructions are very easy to follow (good pictures). I know it took me about 4 hours just to do one side but I am just learning to work on my car, I had to figure out the different bolts, so I was very slow. Tommorrow I will get the other one on and it should go much faster now that I know what I am doing!
YES I KNOW the car is dirty!!!!! It will get a bath when I am done working on it.

karen1953 12-02-2006, 07:13 PM And they say that:
1) Women can't do a man's job.
2) Nurses are only good for Nursing.
Wrong, wrong.
Good work, when you are finished getting the second bd on,
and washing your Twin, come over and wash mine.
Good JOB.

Great Job and the one question I have for you is this, If you ever buy a Vehicle again would you purchase it with or with out the running Boards.
I think its great what you are doing my self I dont think I could do it, I rather purchase it with the Running Boards on the vehicles but then again I am doing things with My HHr that I would have never done with any of my Vehicles that I have owned in the past. Great Job and You Go Girl.

TCRNCOB 12-02-2006, 08:17 PM Next car that needs running boards will come with them! When I bought this one I didn't know about running boards.
I really didn't mind putting them on but having the factory do it would have been easier. Cost wise I think this way was cheaper because I got them at cost (my brother works parts at a chevy dealership here in Fla.)

I know when I'm licked. Nice job! :thumb:
courthousedeb 12-02-2006, 11:06 PM Right on Theresa!!! Way to go girl. :yourock:
My HHR came w/o the boards and I had the dealer put them on...but that was when I was leery of doing stuff myself. I admire you taking the bull by the horns and tackling them yourself.
As you know, I do almost all my mods myself now and it truly gives you a sense of accomplishment when the job is done. My boyfriend offers to help me whenever I tackle something new and I told him, I want to try and do this on my own. If I run into a problem, I'll let you know and he has come to appreciate the big grin on my face when I'm able to do it without his help.
Keep up the good work...and a great how to by the way. :thumb:
teech 12-03-2006, 09:16 AM Is it wrong of me to think I can do this myself now, just because a woman did it? :red:
I caught myself thinking, "well if SHE can do it"...
Im so ashamed. Maybe I should go on a world apology tour
great job BTW...maybe you can give me a quick tutorial when I make it to Florida in a few weeks!
mizzouHHR 12-03-2006, 12:55 PM Nice job :thumb: And you have the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself.
BIG JIM WOODMAN 12-03-2006, 01:13 PM Great job!:thumb:

artcotto 01-17-2007, 12:14 AM hi!! I am a new HHR owner,
Where can I buy running boards for my new HHR? they come in painted?
Thanks!
oneton 01-17-2007, 12:24 AM welcome; you can get them at GM parts cheap.com there are other places also use the search to find on this site
Memphis_HHR 05-31-2007, 09:02 PM As I have posted elsewhere, the boards are no longer available prepainted unless you get lucky and find a set on a shelf hidden. They come primered only and have to be painted. I ordered my set today from a stealership in east TN. I heard that they boards are on national backorder right now and there are just a few sets in stock around the country. The local GM distributor said he'd paint mine for $250 which, according to several body shops, is a very good price. Most wanted $400 to $500 just to paint them. I'm going to try to get the splashguards ordered as well to install it all at the same time. Thanks for the pictures and the writeup.
nfboy 05-31-2007, 09:06 PM Spreading the word? I hope you don't plan to post to every thread that was on here about boards and/or sandblasting. That will resurrect a lot of old threads I suspect.;)
Memphis_HHR 05-31-2007, 09:10 PM Just trying to keep the public informed as to my findings. Sometimes the newbies need to resurrect in order to find new meaning.
Bertland 05-31-2007, 09:18 PM Good Job!!! :thumb: :one:
BIG JIM WOODMAN 05-31-2007, 09:19 PM old news. move on.
Memphis_HHR 05-31-2007, 09:50 PM I apologize for posting and bringing up "old news" and old posts. I'll try to familiarize myself in the search method of the site to find what I want. Thanks for everyone's help. I'll move on.............
rcsart 05-31-2007, 10:05 PM :thumb: Theresa! It is so good to see you and other women on the site doing all these cool things to your cars. I'm glad you are getting well deserved hats off; you’re an inspiration to my wife. Her passion for getting her hands dirty has put a lot of smiles on her face and I applaud everyone who attempts these projects. Even after year of doing custom work on autos and motor cycles, I still get a big smile on my face when it's done and looks right. Congratulations on a job well done, what are you doing for your next mod? :guns:

karen1953 05-31-2007, 10:19 PM old news. move on.
Might be old news to you, but since this was first posted, a lot of new members have started looking, so to them this is new.
It is a great how to with pics, of all phases, more than others have done for the same.
Memphis_HHR 05-31-2007, 10:36 PM Thank you. The pictures here and the instructions from CZ along with his pics helps alot. I know what it was that ticked off the folks now and I've let it go. I'm just going to play along and let it roll with the flow. On the motorcycle site, newbies cant do searches like members are allowed to do. We wind up with alot of repeat questions but yet we all dive in to help one another. It's all about the mods and sharing of ideas. If one knows, he teaches. If he doesnt know, he asks, learns, and then teaches.

And that is the way it should be. My comment was not intended to be interpreted as being ticked, but merely to point out that the same commentary does not need to be in multiple threads back to back. Good how to's should be stickied so they do not need to be bumped up.
TCRNCOB 06-02-2007, 05:21 PM I am always willing to help anyone here. I had a great time learning how to put on my running boards. I had never done anything like it before and my EX (thank god he is my ex) used to tell me I was to dumb to work on my car.
I still need to put on my intake and air filter but my son's MVA set me a little behind. I will get back to work on the car soon.

kdplaskon 12-07-2007, 07:56 PM Lovely pictures. So, we picked up our running boards and we've taken them off to be painted when I suddenly realized that I'm not sure what I did with the installation instructions.
Any chance that someone could scan and send them to me on or off line?
Thanks
BlueJackets 12-08-2007, 09:59 PM I will have to look for your car next time I am in Winter Haven. If you see someone in a Sandstone Metallic (with running boards and Chicken Little on the antenna) waving crazy at you, you will know it is me. Ha-Ha.
TCRNCOB 12-08-2007, 11:17 PM I am the easiest to spot now with my new rims and tires and am the lowest HHR in town!!
I wave at other HHR's but most just look at me like I am nuts.
RobsTurtleHHR 04-06-2008, 03:16 PM Where did you get the running boards?
tmerkle111 01-15-2010, 09:13 PM Does anyone know how to install the running boards using the brackets? I have an 06' and I was able to get a good deal on some from ebay and they are off an 08'. I just don't have the install instrustions for these and they have a different bracket than what is pictured here. Does anyone have an how to with the different set up?
Thanks,
Tom

Let me start by saying I'm not a mechanic. The last time I gave advice here I got flamed. I would have responded to your email but apparently your settings prevent you from receiving email. If you look at this thread I think you will find it is informative.
http://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1138&page=5
I do have a scan of my running board installation instructions but can't figure out how to attach a file to this post. If you change your email settings I will send you the file. From what I read before I installed my running boards there are at least three different kinds of OEM kits. Mine had only six brackets some have eight as shown in this thread.
Good Luck ZIP :thumb:
tmerkle111 01-15-2010, 10:54 PM Could you just send them to tmerkle111@q.com.
Thanks
9mmbullitt 01-22-2010, 11:13 PM Mine had 6 brackets. They were the new style brackets. I have the instructions. Let me know if you still need them.
KINGSHIPLEY 02-14-2011, 03:18 PM i need the instructions too please
numerounostunna@msn.com:king:
nacademus 02-14-2011, 04:30 PM I want running boards so bad :'( *sniffle
KINGSHIPLEY 02-14-2011, 04:57 PM got mine on ebay for 390$ shipped, prepainted with my color code. hard to pass:twothumbs:
nacademus 02-14-2011, 05:35 PM $390? Better than the dealer, for sure. I still can't see paying that much for what equates to a few brackets and plastic... its ridiculous.
KINGSHIPLEY 02-14-2011, 10:12 PM yea thats about how thrilled my wife was when they showed up on the debit card
