View Full Version : Flowmaster
adamlowery 01-05-2006, 03:21 PM I'm pretty set on getting some exhaust this week. What flowmaster muffler would be the best if I don't want it to be loud inside the car, and a nice deep tone on the outside. Ive been looking at the 50 series delta flow and the super 40 series. Any ideas. I'm wanting to do it this week so any input would help me b/c I'd hate to get it done and then not like the way it sounds.
captain howdy 01-05-2006, 03:26 PM They sound like s**t on a four cylinder. They don't have the rich deep sound you get out of a muscle car with delta 40s or 50s. I have never heard them on a HHR but I have heard them on other four cylinders. They sound bad a** on V8s but stay away from them if you have a V4. Just my personal opinion. You should wait untill a full cat back exhaust hits the market. You aren't going to do much to your HHR other than change the sound a little.
adamlowery 01-05-2006, 03:36 PM hmmm..there has to be something I can do to it then lol i might just go do it who knows thanks for the info though howdy
captain howdy 01-05-2006, 03:44 PM Don't let me stop you. By all means do it! :thumb: If you only get a little HP boost and a different sound at least you can say you have a Flowmaster muffler and none of us can say that at this point to my knowledge. Mod away bro! Do what ever you think is good for your HHR and makes you happy. :D
adamlowery 01-05-2006, 04:40 PM so out of all of the ones from flowmaster which one do you think would sound the cleanest and deepest. cleaneast meaning that tapping, gurgling sound after its been revved up.
Markiemark 01-05-2006, 04:55 PM The one hooked up to a Chevy Big Block V-8
Sorry, could not resist!!!
adamlowery 01-05-2006, 04:58 PM lol..ill get right on that.
captain howdy 01-05-2006, 04:59 PM Generally speaking 40s are deeper in sound than 50s but they have more of the tapping gurgling noise as you put it. But I don't think any Flowmasters really sound good on a 4 cylinder. I personally like Magnaflow and Borla.
Mavrik_HHR 01-05-2006, 05:06 PM I had a magnaflow on my focus, and it was awesome. 2.5" in and out. Great sound.
I dont know how a flowmaster would sound though. I know that Flowmaster Super 40's are loud on a 5-cylinder Canyon, and the Super 50 was the quieter one. Up to you though. Good luck.
Tom
captain howdy 01-05-2006, 05:10 PM Your right! I fixed my post. I don't know what I was thinking. Its been a long hard day at work. I'm ready to go home. I had a Magnaflow catback system on my Mustang and loved the sound. ;) I think that will be who I choose when I do my exhaust but I am going to wait untill some catbacks hit the market. I dont see the point in just replacing just your muffler unless you have to.
adamlowery 01-05-2006, 05:17 PM I think I'm just gonna go with the 40 delta.. :) I'll worry about how it sounds after i get it.
snksknr94 01-05-2006, 05:18 PM STAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING FLOWMASTER. Flowmaster=shit, they are just about the worst flowing, and in my opinion worst sounding exhaust out there. I've seen many dyno graphs on different cars going from a flowmaster to something else and they always pick up more power.
captain howdy 01-05-2006, 05:22 PM I kind of agree. They use a really stupid baffle system to give them their deep sound. If you want performance go with a company that uses a more open design, like Magnaflow. Sorry to keep pushing them but I love Magnaflow and they use no baffles so they have some of the best HP gains.
adamlowery 01-05-2006, 05:27 PM well you guys know alot more about mufflers than I do. Is this the money :)

7hp gain and 8lb. -ft gain
SoCalHHR 01-05-2006, 05:30 PM so out of all of the ones from flowmaster which one do you think would sound the cleanest and deepest. cleaneast meaning that tapping, gurgling sound after its been revved up.
I would get the Magnaflow replacement. Something like this:
MagnaFlow Replacement With Tip (http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=769)
If you get a unit with a chrome tip, be SURE to get one at least 6" long, as the canister has to be set back to avoid the rear roll pan.
Tthe other option is to have them cut off the stock tip and weld it on a universal muffler.
Post pics when you're done!
captain howdy 01-05-2006, 05:30 PM I love them but your not really going to get a deep sound out of Magnaflow. They have more of a cool thrushing airy noise.
adamlowery 01-05-2006, 05:35 PM I'm not to worried about how deep it is. I just want it to sound clean..in other words as far away from a harley as I can possibly get lol. I listened to sound clips of a cavalier with a 2.2l ecotec with catback and it sounded sooooo clean .(sure carries a heft price tag though ) I think I'll just wait for that.
captain howdy 01-05-2006, 06:08 PM It'll be well worth the wait!
kodak_jack 01-05-2006, 07:23 PM Hey, Howdy, at most, you're 10 miles from me but you're posting times that are almost 8 hours ahead! I guess you really are a space cadet! :D
KNEZRYD 01-05-2006, 09:02 PM I have put three different mufflers on my HHR,two were performance and they were way too loud. Finally I put a "stock aftermarket" on and got the sound I wanted and better performance than the other two so-called "performance mufflers.

i just removed my trash can size muffler and then test drove. the sound had a great tone but seemed to loud. the hhr has another resonator midway on the chassis . i added a 14 inch 2.5in inlet 2.5 outlet. round tube muffler and a stainless oval tip at the rear. sounds great now both on the hwy and around town. it sounds like an old sports car. it realy cool to listen to . try something, your local muffler shop should be happy to help. my2ct
