Dental Office Grinning Big After Boss's Big Gifts

A Richmond Hill dentist is really giving his employees something to smile about. The staff at Smile Innovations just thought they were being treated to lunch at the Ford Plantation for their holiday party, but instead of dessert, servers arrived with a platter full of keys: nine sets of keys for all nine lucky employees to nine brand-new Chevy HHR SUVs, wrapped in the dental office's logo.

"When we got these keys, I just thought we were going to be test driving Hummers or something, just, 'boy Christmas,' and now I have a car!" exclaimed Melissa Szeker. "I need a new one so bad. I have a car!!"

"Unbelievable!" added dental assistant Shelley Medders, admiring her new car. "This is the biggest gift I've ever gotten in my whole entire life. Even at 16, I didn't get a brand-new car. It's amazing! Amazing."

Dr. Philip Copenhaver and Dr. Trout said this year's gifts for the staff were a bit extravagant, but they wanted to do something special.

"It's a blessing to have the type of staff we have," said Dr. Copenhaver, "so I like taking care of them."

The office tries to do something big for its employees every year, but everyone admits, this could be hard to top.

I remember a couple years back some company in California gave all their employees a bonus. Not just any bonus as they seemed to average around $80,000/employee. For alot of employees it was actually more than they made in a couple of years. Now thats what I call sharing the success.

I posted this info at the SSR fanatic site too - and a member there (in the dental industry) highly doubted this was true - felt there had to be a catch, so I emaild the Dentist office - here are the replies I got from the Doctors:

-------------------------------------------------------------

Good Morning Keith

Wow... where did you here about the HHRs?

We are in Georgia... the other side of the world from Cali.

Thanks for the complimentary thoughts.

We are here to help prove your dental buddies wrong... it really is a gift... no "catch"... no restrictions... 9 HHR's.

W too are extremely and obsessively quality oriented, professional and will continue provide the best dental care possible yet all of this cannot be done without an incredible and supportive staff.

Fell free to contact our office (912) 756-2936, unannounced and speak with anyone of them, openly out front or unofficially "off the record".

We all work extremely hard, treat everyone (patients and staff) well and enjoy what we do.

All staff are compensated well, 401k, vacation pay, health insurance and profit sharing... work 4 days a week, 3-4 day weekends and are out of the office by 12:30 - 2:30 PM each and everyday.

During the next year, we currently are on schedule to all be "off" and out of the office 6-8 weeks per year... crazy stuff.

Get your video camera ready so that you can watch and document as they give up their beer, break their pool cues, burn their record collection... do you think they will really quit cursing after all of that?

Let me know.

Merry Christmas.

Bill Trout

Hey Keith,

My partner Dr. Bill Trout just emailed me your info and I have to Ditto everything my partner said back to you.

What better marketing strategy than to have your staff running around so exciting about their job that they can hardly
hold it in! Yes, we love to give to our staff, but if there was a hidden catch -- here is what it would be:

"A smiling, energetic, loving their job staff + 24 hour a day marketing as the staff drive their vehicles everywhere talking about
what a wonderful place they work === A magnet pulling patients to our office to make sure they can be apart of this awesome
dental practice!!!"

Can you tell I am excited!

So, tell your friends to "Cowboy up" and break their pool cues, give up beer, etc.

Cause this is the way dentistry should be!

Merry Christmas Keith

and Thank you again for your comments

What?, no running boards???

They're in the Savannah, Georgia area. It's a cold day in hell when they get snow or ice there. No salt or sand on the road in the winter, so really no practical use for running boards.

Smart move on the part of the dentists. There's LOTS of money in cosmetic dentistry, so now they'll have nine rolling "billboards" running around town advertising their services. They'll probably get as much or more advertising "bang for the buck", than they do with a full-page telephone book ad or a roadside billboard.

Undoubtedly they got a generous package deal from the Chevy dealer for buying that many at one time, plus they'll get a nice tax write-off. Not to mention nine happy, loyal employees advertising their practice by word of mouth.

I'd rather work for Lincoln Electric in Cleve OH. I've seen it on the local tv news where they showed some guy holding his bonus check. I cut and pasted this from the Cleveland Plain Dealer article I found on the web. When I worked in a shop, the guys talked about this every yr,since we only got a week wages ourselves as a bonus.

Friday, December 08, 2006
Lincoln Electric bonus averages $22,330 per worker

Lincoln Electric Co. (Nas: LECO) said that 2006 bonuses for the Cleveland manufacturer's 2,900 eligible employees totals more than $69 million, averaging $22,330 per employee. Lincoln, which makes welding equipment and materials, has provided bonuses in each of the last 73 years. This year's total is 34 percent higher than 2005, according to Roy Morrow, Lincoln's spokesman. The eligible each receive the bonus in addition to regular wages.

Wow! an HHR for a bonus, and all you have to do is stick your tool in someones mouth for the rest of the year.
