View Full Version : GM Tonawanda Powertrain Auto Show - July 2007

This is a very pre-emptive post here, but I'd like to gauge interest in coming to the annual GM Tonawanda Powertrain auto show and showing a metric buttload of HHR's. I can guarantee you that Stitch will be showing.

The show is in the last half of July, usually on a Saturday. My wife will have further information hopefully next week as to an approximate date (it's usually the second-to-last Saturday in July, but last year's was on the last Saturday). The show time is typically from 8am-6pm. There are also prizes involved, including I believe a category designed for clubs about showing the most of a single model: last year's winner of this trophy was an international Corvair club that showed 30 Corvairs.

I will also put this out: if you are interested and fill out an entry form for the show, I'll send you one of the many Tonawanda Powertrain license plate frames, suitable for car use. (we have a bunch of them, and I in fact have one on the front of Stitch.)

Post here if you're interested. As I get more info I'll post it here. When I get applications, I'll PM all those interested so I can find out where to send the apps.

Thanks in advance! :thumb:

Interested! Might even be representing the Camaros and Suburbans along with the HHRs if I can get a third person, maybe a second HHR if my sister wants to come . . .

My wife says she'll check this week about the exact date so that planning can start. She also mentioned that if I can secure enough HHR folks to come, we can count ourselves as a club and she miiiiight be able to talk the plant PR lady into giving everyone a group tour of the plant, including the L850 line which produces all HHR engines. This has precedent, as it was done last year for the Corvair club: even though the line is defunct, Tonawanda produced the air-cooled inline 6 for the Corvair, so those folks got to tour what they termed as "holy ground."

Up until about a year ago, I used to live 2 blocks from the plant. I have attended the last 10 shows there and they are great. There are engine assembly demos and transmission assembly demos, a band playing, food, chevy NASCAR cars (usually #8, #24, or #29), and lots of stuff for kids to do. Last plant tour I attended was in the late 80's. Our Chevy Suburban engine was made there (2002 8.1L big block). I now live about 35 minutes away, but I will definitely attend if there is no time conflict with another event that I have in late July. I'll let you know if I can attend when the show date is released.

Where exactly is this?

The plant is located about ... oh, fifteen minutes south of Niagara Falls if you take the straight shot down I-190 (and pay the 75 cents at Grand Island to cut through). More likely from where you are, you're going to take the thruway (I-90), in which case you would take it all the way across New York, getting off at I-190 North, then taking that all the way through downtown Buffalo and getting off at the Vulcan Street exit on the north side. If you want to MapQuest it, here's the address:

2995 River Road
Tonawanda, NY 14207

It's literally on the Niagara River. Hope this helps!

Mapquest first wants me to head south then enter Pennsylvania. Screw that! I'll just take I-95 into NY then hit I-90 from there.

Good date! I don't have any plans that weekend, so I'm planning on being there. I'm only about 1/2 hour away in Lockport. See you all there. As I posted previously, it's more than just a car show. Well worth the time to see it.

A good portion of us will be getting together on June 23rd, and this little message is on the entry forms, but just to let everyone else know:

If you're interested in showing at Tonawanda, the Tri-Five Auto Club requires that all entrants have an up-to-date fire extinguisher in their cars. This stems from an incident a few years ago when one of the entrants had a spontaneous electrical fire during the show. So basically, if you're planning on showing with us, you'll need to pick up an extinguisher. Just a head's up. :thumb:

Docwylie
06-07-2007, 11:15 AM
Thanks for the info, DC. Does it have to be mounted or can it just be somewhere in the car? Are there ones specifically made for autos? I've never been in any kind of car show (other than model cars) so I'm clueless on this.

Desert Coyote
06-07-2007, 02:08 PM
Doesn't say specifically that it needs to be mounted or not. As far as type, just a small ABC extinguisher should be sufficient. If you have a chance, come down to my store today and I can set you up with one, I've got five of 2 varying sizes behind me, I'll set ya up. :thumb:

(All those from out of state or who won't make it to the Falls who want to enter, send a PM to BlackHHR06, he who is in possession of the entry blanks.)

I hope we can do this again sometime...maybe at a local "Cruise Night" somewhere in WNY...and definitely at the Powertrain Show in August. Is there some way we can set it up so that we can display our rides together at the show?

This question came up in the Niagara Falls thread, and since we can start planning on this one ...

We can probably find out from Tri-Five if they'll put like-models together. Otherwise, the suggestion I was going to make was to convoy to the plant together. The most logical point, IMHO, to start out from would be K&S Performance on River Road: from there, it's a left and then a straight shot to the plant.

(Kind of an ulterior motive: maybe if K&S sees enough HHR's in their lot, maybe they'll realize that it might behoove them to start either carrying parts for us or get some better suppliers: f/i, the only intakes they can get are the K&N and Airaid ones, and they hadn't even heard of CGS.)

Anyway, just a bit of a thought to chew on.

Sounds like a good idea
If you want I can call the Lady that we send the entry fee to and ask Her if the HHR'S can all park together? This way if we go to the Plant in a convoy as you suggested hopefully we can park together in a row.
If i'm the one that calls Her approx. how many HHR'S will there be? attending the Engine Plant event in August.
Looking forward to your reply.

Count me in! I'll be at the show and will be sending my entry form tomorrow morning.

I'm in favor of the idea of convoying in together to claim an area where we can park together. I'm wondering of we can call ourselves the HHR Club of WNY to give us a little clout? Can we set up any of those pop-up shelters where we're parked? I've got a 10' x 10' one and I'm sure others might also. It'd be nice to have a shady place to sit when we're not out scoping out the other cars (plus a place to park a cooler or two).

There's enough car washes around, I think ... closest one to the show location/meet point is a coin-op place in Tonawanda on Seymour St. (kind of kitty-corner from a Sunoco station and the Post Office) If you want an automated wash, the best closest one would be Delta Sonic on NF Blvd and Maple in Amherst. Those two are the closest ones I know of, but you might check around your hotel and see if there's one on the Canadian side.

Check with BlackHHR06 if you want to pre-register for the show. Otherwise, they do allow you to register the day of the show as long as you arrive before noon (if you caravan with us, that won't be an issue). The main disadvantage to this is a higher registration fee ($15 as opposed to $10), plus as stated earlier you need to have an up to date fire extinguisher in the car.

More details on the plan for August 18th forthcoming in a separate thread.

She said not a good idea bringing a Grill.
Sandwiches,Pop & Beer in a Cooler or any kind of food that you don't have to cook.
Also asked about putting up a canopy and She said if it's a nice day we will be parking on the grass, If raining we will be parking on Blacktop,She said bring along canopy just in case.
Put Beer at the bottom of Cooler and cover with ice and other things.
Make sure Fire extinguisher is visable ( lay down in back of HHR )
