View Full Version : New headlight covers
en0oNmAI 01-29-2007, 01:32 PM Used the same old vinyl and covered the headlights now. I will have some video up soon showing the output of the lights for everyone to see that this does NOT block the vision. Its awesome. I'm almost all DSM'ed out instead of blacked out. HAHA:thumb:

If you meant the light output. That's impossible. ;) Cover a light with something that is not clear and it will reduce the light output.
But it does look good.
en0oNmAI 01-29-2007, 02:17 PM Not necessarily. When I shoot the video you'll see what I mean. There is almost NO change in the lighting.
O6ChevyHHR 01-29-2007, 02:57 PM wow that looks Sick!
longhorn 01-29-2007, 03:09 PM You have got to find out where to get more of that! I want to do the taillights and side markers
ymerej_mortsdnil 01-29-2007, 03:16 PM WOW - that is SWEET! Keep up the great work man, your HHR looks SICK!

Solman.....
You need to see this "stuff" in person. It is unbelieveable.
I saw Jason's car after he did the tail lights and side markers. This "tape" that he found matches his car's color so well that everything blends right in. I didn't notice any difference in tail light or brake light brilliance so, if there is any reduction, it is not noticeable (and we had 6-7 HHR's parked next to each other and compaired).
Again, this "stuff" is remarkable...not what you would expect.
Can't wait to see the video......almost makes me want to drive to Tucson to see it.
solman98 01-29-2007, 03:28 PM Welll what exactly is this "stuff"
Non clear material that does not reduce light output is beyond the laws of nature.....
Let me guess, only available in one color....

You would need Jason to specifically answer that. But if I remember correctly from another thread we discussed this on, I believe he didn't know the name AND he bought the only piece/roll of it.
Please note that I said ....if there is diminished brightness, it was not noticeable. I did not say it did not diminish the brightness. Maybe my judgement is poor:red: :red: :D :D .
We can just wait for the video, and/or reports from people that see it in person.

So no one really knows what this mystery stuff is  . I can't wait to see the video also. I know with normal tail light covers, they seem to show through very well when lights and brakes are on. But with headlights it is differant with every one I have ever used. So I will hold off of judgement until I see. But I still say that if you put a non clear covering on a light, it has to diminish light output. Maybe not much, but there is just no way around that.
But the still look good.:thumb:
teech 01-30-2007, 07:28 AM any problems with the cops?
is it legal?

In SC, nope. But lot's still run them.

"Only for show or daytime driving only", at least that's the disclaimer on all the boxes of manufacture's headlight films.
The car really looks awesome!!:thumb:
SICKS.OH 01-30-2007, 09:37 AM i must have missed it. what is this stuff?!?! i have the same color, and would love to fill in my reflectors.
en0oNmAI 01-30-2007, 11:18 AM The "stuff" everyone is referring to is a transparent vinyl that I was lucky enough to find locally. I did buy the only roll and I have gone back to the shop several times and they have no clue who or where makes it let alone the name of the supplier they got it from. If the light output is diminished at all like Snoopy said it is VERY VERY minute! I have some pics I can upload tonight but my video camera has taken a crap on me and I have to purchase a new battery pack tonight or tomorrow.
The Ions in the pic are from our AZ Cobalt Ion group. There was a big meet this last saturday. Something like 20-25 cars maybe. Mostly Cobalts, those 3 Ions, and me. Its more of a delta chassis group than anything.
SICKS.OH 01-30-2007, 12:47 PM crap, i was hoping for a name/brand.
hopefully google will turn something up.
thanks
SICKS.OH 01-30-2007, 01:08 PM is there tiny little "holes" in it?
i might be on to something with "Perforated Vinyl" and "One-Vision Vinyl"

slits would be hot too. THe white HHR with the wooden bed (some car show car) had slits for lights in the rear. Some horizontal slits in those head lights would be better than solid IMO, 3 of em on each about 1/4" thick...
en0oNmAI 01-30-2007, 02:25 PM There are no holes in this vinyl. It is solid all the way and also has a metallic finish to match the paint. The color name was Charcoal Marble. But the vinyl has no marble finish to it at all.

I think I have a line as to who and what this stuff actually is. It is a vinyl used for signage. It is designed to let the light shine through. Although the auto industry isn't it's intended purpose, Jason is actually using it the way it was intended to be used.
Maybe somebody in the biz who understands the details better than I can request samples and see if this is the stuff.
(I wonder if this site is ready to take all the hits that it's going to get this week! )........
see through vinly (http://accessign.com/glowgeneral.html)
For those that will be at work and can't access the site (captain howdy), here is a sampling ...........
SICKS.OH 01-31-2007, 08:32 AM sweet!!
longhorn 01-31-2007, 11:57 AM jx3 - those are 2-ply engraving signage colors for interior or exterior signs, not vinyl
longhorn 01-31-2007, 11:58 AM I will get a hold of the vinyl sign dealers I do business with to see what I can find out.
jx3 - those are 2-ply engraving signage colors for interior or exterior signs, not vinyl
What else can you find that is colored "charcoal marble"?
I don't know, this stuff sounds like it's it.
Not vinly?........
en0oNmAI 01-31-2007, 01:04 PM it was a good try though jx3... that is the name of the color they gave me but not sure of the company...
The vinyl is signage vinyl too. Not perforated window film.

And your saying this isn't it?
en0oNmAI 01-31-2007, 01:45 PM I cant see the product so I dont know... you'd have to get a sample and see. All I know is what I've got my hands on has no name, just a color "charcoal marble." I really wish I could be more help to everyone!

Retroburban 02-04-2007, 06:41 PM Sweet Jason! Can't wait to see in on the 11th.. you are entering your car..right?
en0oNmAI 02-04-2007, 06:53 PM I sure hope so! I would hate to miss another possible meet-n-greet! I got a few new things for the show as you can tell Retro! All my interior lighting has been replaced by blue LED's. The inside has been compared to the "ocean" now. HAHA! The new exhaust system is nice and deep and not ricey at all! Everything has come out nicely. Oh, and my new plates! Now I just gotta keep it cleaned and waxed except for the rather large dent on the driver's side.
Thanks for the + comments ya'll!
All my interior lighting has been replaced by blue LED's. The inside has been compared to the "ocean" now.
Love the exterior lights.
How about some pics of the interior lighting. Is it just the map lights on the mirror? What are the new bulbs and where'd you get them?
en0oNmAI 02-04-2007, 07:58 PM all bulbs are LED replacements I found on eBay. There were only $0.50 per set. I replaced the front map lites, rear map lites and rear dome lite also. Look is awesome if you don't mind the blue lighting! Will have pics soon!
O6ChevyHHR 02-04-2007, 08:38 PM SORRY GreyGhost! My bad!
Jason love the Leds onder the car, all I have to say is holyS##T!
solman98 02-05-2007, 06:52 AM Looks nice. They don't block too much light from the angle of the shots. But they do block. But the real test is take a shot of the headlights on with covers on/off from the dash looking down the road.
Here, that's a $150 fine BTW.....
AZ RADIO 02-05-2007, 11:24 PM Car looks great keep up on all the cool mods!
Black Beauty 02-06-2007, 07:24 AM Well no wonder you`re getting so many votes,in the "Featured Ride", MAN...!
Next time let a fella know he`s comin` to a gun fight, with a knife...
SWEET... B/B
sleeper 02-08-2007, 12:47 AM Those vinyl covers look kick ass.. Great Idea..
The Brake lights (in the pics) look pretty much un-affected
The Headlights (imo) do look somewhat dimmer, from your pic..
Course having: Projector Foglights (100w bulbs, restrictor plate removed) certainly helps light the way anyhow !!!!
Very Sharp Machine man !!!!!!! Well done mods !!!
You really nailed the color w/the vinyl though..in your pics.
Black Beauty 02-11-2007, 12:04 PM Saw my buddy yesterday,(with the sign shop), asked him about the availability of this Translucent vinyl, He said it may be readily avail. he would look into it.
Maybe I can get a small amount of all the colors, HHRs, somehow make it avail.
