Do any of you New Yorkers know if neon license plate frames are legal in our state? I remember seeing them around a couple years ago, but haven't recently...and I was thinking how cool one would look on my HHR but don't want to get hassled.

I don't think it's so much a brightness issue as it is possibly a mod issue. As in, he wants to use the neon frame as an appearance mod, not necessarily because the existing light is insufficient. I say this because rarely have I seen any neon plate frames in use on cars that were white (usually folks who get them are trying to match the car's color).

Not sure about NY's laws, even though I live here now. Michigan's laws I know, and neon light plate frames were strictly outlawed except for off-road use (show use). If that's the case here, there are also alternatives to a full-neon frame: I know of one company which makes translucent colored plastic plate frames which, when illuminated by the stock license plate light, will glow around the perimeter of the plate. Just inserting my buck-o-five into this.

I've thought of that myself, but the plastic frames I've seen - well, they wouldn't make it through a few of our summer heat waves without looking awful and probably falling apart. I just gave it up.

They are illegal if lit while driving. You can have one on your vehicle as long as you only light it for show while parked and not on public roads. The same applies to all neon lights here in NY.

You could always cut your leg off and mount a rocket launcher in it like I just saw in the preview for "Grindhouse"... I don't THINK they can regulate that as long as you do it yourself. :lol: -- and just think, you don't have to put any holes in your car!!! :thumb:

That's a great idea! Even better...I have an appointment with a surgeon to install heat generating lasers in my eyeballs so that I can zap PT Cruisers, Elements and xB's on my way to work in the morning. From what I understand, a side effect is that the back of my head will glow like neon everytime I fire them so I can get the same effect without the license plate frames. :lol:
