View Full Version : New Gold-Line Leveling 1.6" Drop Springs
TruckSHOP.com 03-27-2007, 06:23 PM We've had several customers inquire about the Gold-Line Rear Leveling Springs and want to update you on the status. They are NOW AVAILABLE! In stock and ready to ship. These springs are a great way to get rid of that gap in the rear wheel well and level out the HHR. They drop the rear of the HHR 1.60 inches. These can handle an extra load (cargo or a sound system) and will not sag or bottom out like other springs might. tireman1554 03-27-2007, 06:25 PM Looks like I'll be making a purchase real soon.
ymerej_mortsdnil 03-27-2007, 07:30 PM thanks for the info...I WANT THESE!!!
Is it usually easy to find a place to install these? That is my only concern, that I don't know much about having these installed...I JUST KNOW THAT I WANT THEM!!!
TruckSHOP.com 03-27-2007, 08:02 PM The rear springs are an easy swap you can do yourself if you have a jack, stands, and a few tools. Since you don't need to change the front springs there are no struts involved. If you don't want to install them youself, then any auto shop should be able to do the install. It's just remove & replace. Shouldn't take more than an hour of time either way.
O6ChevyHHR 03-27-2007, 08:09 PM you have any pics yet of these installed, im sure members would like to see how it looks.
dnbguy86 03-27-2007, 08:14 PM 1.00 inch lower in the rear will level the vehicle. 1.60 inches will have a slight rake to it, i think 1.6 is too much IMO.

this is a good point...anyone else agree with him?
Anyone have any pics of these installed on their ride?
oneton 03-28-2007, 07:56 AM I don't have Gold-Line springs, I have 1.5" in the rear and it sits level. I like the look with out the big space over the rear tires. CK out pic of my car, the one with the steps on

I am very intersted in the new Gold-Line leveling springs, I would like to hear from someone who has used them on their ride.

What brand are yours and are they made for leveling out the HHR?
JT's HHR 03-29-2007, 11:06 PM I had my HHR lowered with the gold lines. After I had this done oncoming traffic kept flashing their brights at me. I had to adjust my headlights down a little and that seemed to work.
dixiesHHR 04-04-2007, 06:52 PM Just installed the new rear springs. It does sit level and looks good. Took a little over a hour and the only hard part is getting the old ones out, but a crow bar fixed that. Will take some pictures the week end at the show in this week end. Very happy with them.
TruckSHOP.com 04-04-2007, 06:59 PM Thanks for the feedback. If you have a spring compressor it makes removing the stock springs a bit easier. But a crow bar works too. Look forward to seeing the pics.
Umm ya see, were gonna need pics, thanks.
No pics = WORTHLESS argh! :(

HillsdaleHHR 04-06-2007, 06:50 PM Nice :thumb:
It looks good and I cant tell at the same time? Doesnt make sence does it? Only place I see the difference is in the wheel well in the back but maybe its just the angle of the picture.
TruckSHOP.com 04-06-2007, 09:59 PM I hope to have more pictures next week. You're right, there is not a huge difference. The springs lower the back 1.6 inches. As you can see there is less gap in the back and the HHR sits level front to back. If you look close you can also see the rear is closer to the ground. There is no difference in the front, since it is just rear levling springs.
The ride is very much like stock, just slightly more firm on hard cornering and on big dips and bumps.
The leveling kit is for anyone looking to reduce the fenderwell gap and improve looks, without losing ride comfort or overall ground clearance. It's also an easy install most anyone could do. It's not the type of modfication that will draw a lot of attention, but you might say it's the way it should have come from the factory.

Any idea how these springs would affect an HHR with 225-35-20s on it? At stock height, mine has scraped once (but over an unusually large hump in the road, one passenger in the back). I would be interested in these springs if I could be sure that it wouldn't compound the problem too badly. Are they stiff enough to prevent this?
TruckSHOP.com 04-06-2007, 10:52 PM What width and offset are your wheels? That will make all the difference. It sounds like just a minor rub you could trim or roll the rear fender lip to prevent. These springs have a higher spring rate than stock so they will not compress as much compared with stock springs under the same load. However, given that you already have the rub, lowering it really isn't going to make that any better unless you trim something.
hnewagn 04-06-2007, 10:57 PM With 20" Wheels I had to get my rear fenders rolled. My wheels are 8.5" wide with 235/35/20 tires. I will be installing the springs soon let you know how it works.

I have no idea what the offset the wheels are because they were on my HHR when I bought it. I'm a bit ignorant when it comes to measuring offset on a wheel. I assume that the width is similar to hnewagn's tires. Thanks for the clarification on the spring rate, and I will take your advice and do some fender lip modification.

Thanks! Great to hear from someone with a similar setup :thumb: . Please post back how it worked out.
posted pics on truckshop.com now of a HHR w the springs on it
hnewagn 04-07-2007, 12:32 AM I think my wheels have a 34mm offset. When I need to get new tires i will try to use 245/35/20 I don't know if it will work my front tires do not rub but the clearance is very minimal.

Your gallery pics look like Foose wheels, and you're right, I think they are 34 or 35mm offset. 245/35/20 are going to be a little wider and just a bit taller than your 235/35/20. By the numbers you'll gain 4mm on height and 5mm on width on each side, but actual tires can vary in their real measurements. I think you can make it work, but you might need to trim some more. How much clearance do you have now between the tire and the top of the front strut?

Don't sweat the numbers, since it hardly rubs now. With or without the drop springs you should be able to get clearance to stop the rubbing by trimming or rolling the lip. Your tire size is narrow enough to make up for a less than ideal offset.

hnewagn 04-12-2007, 11:58 PM Drove to work with the new springs the ride is just a little firmer than stock :thumb: . If you need anything for your HHR Jeff is a great person to work with he stayed late the help me out. Thanks!!! Jeff If you need pics with the springs installed call me and I will send you some or use the ones on this site.

Big Kahuna 04-13-2007, 07:33 PM May sound like a dumb question...
But are there bump stops in the rear of the HHR that need to be trimmed when using these Gold-Line Leveling Springs???
GDZHHR 04-13-2007, 08:10 PM May sound like a dumb question...
But are there bump stops in the rear of the HHR that need to be trimmed when using these Gold-Line Leveling Springs???
Yes......and no!
The instructions I got said to trim them. The shop that installed them said it shouldn't be needed.
Big Kahuna 04-13-2007, 08:19 PM Yes......and no!
The instructions I got said to trim them. The shop that installed them said it shouldn't be needed.
But didn't you have the "slammed" version of the Gold-Line Springs???
These would be only on the rear and not as big of a drop... I guess if you didn't need them trimmed for the BIG DROP, then it would not be needed for the "leveling" rear springs.
Right?

That's what I'm thinking but maybe someone else will speak up.
TruckSHOP.com 04-13-2007, 09:28 PM Trimming bump stops is not required, but it is recommened. It will ride smoother on big dips. If you don't trim the bump stops they will engage sooner in the suspension travel than they would in stock configuration and limit the travel somewhat unnecessarilly. Modern foam type bump stops are designed to engage early and allow for a fair amount of travel, but "riding the bumpstops" will overtax them and cause premature breakdown. My thought is that it's a good idea to trim some off even with the leveling springs, but you can definitely install them without trimming and see how it rides.
Big Kahuna 04-15-2007, 09:58 PM Anyone have any more pictures before and after...
I would love to see a true "side photograph" with the entire HHR in the photo. Most of the pictures posted so far are from a front and rear angle.
I would really like to see a side photo to see how truly level it looks.
Thanks for anyone's help...
(as you can see... I am very interested in these leveling springs)
:thumb:
Ya that was the one thing I noticed is that no one gave a good side shot of before and after. Still looks good never the less.
dixiesHHR 04-16-2007, 01:02 PM Sorry about the missing pics but We had the flu, the software is not compatible with the camera, had a death in family, mother in law fell leaving the house for the services and I am not good with computers. Tried to find how to attach photos but could not find the right words for a search. I did post in the gallery but had no good before pics. Still loving the springs and the look they give.

TruckSHOP.com 04-16-2007, 01:59 PM Thanks for the picture, Dixie! Your HHR definitely looks neater with the new stance.
For those waiting to see before and after side shots, I just added some to our site. As far as how "level" it sits, here is one customer's experience. After installing the kit, Brian said these about his HHR (the one in these pictures) "The back only sits about 1/8" higher than the front. The look is great and the ride is very close match to stock." It's about as level as you can get!

HillsdaleHHR 04-16-2007, 02:30 PM :thumb: :thumb: What a difference!!
SoCalHHR 04-16-2007, 02:31 PM They do help level the car almost perfectly, in addition to reducing sway and increasing load carrying capabilities. During the prototyping of these springs, Craig from Gold-Line and I placed over 300lbs in the back of HHR1 without sagging problems - a real bonus for those looking to carry sub boxes or lots of gear. Adding these springs and the Progress sway bar will make the car handle great - the next best thing to a full lowering drop.
Enjoy! :thumb:

They were seperate vinyl pinstripe and a seperate Chevy Bowtie graphic... It just needed something at the end...

I have a friend who has done work for me in the past at a local shop who helped me with the springs and new exhaust set up this past weekend.
Ride quality is smooth as it was stock and possibly a bit better handling and less sway in the rear... Man, I love the new ride with the level look and feel. I do notice backing up view is a bit better as well...
karen1953 05-03-2007, 12:12 AM Had mine done a local 4x4 shop that I have dealt with in the past, cost $60.00.
But they owe me for some sauce, so it might be 0.
Ride is Great, and the springs are settling.
More pics in 2 weeks, the settling should be done by then.
Big Kahuna 05-10-2007, 08:13 AM Hey Jeff...
Just curious... but does it matter if the larger coils on the Goldline Leveling Springs should be installed with the larger spaced coils up or down? Or does that not matter?
Just curious for anyone elese installing these in the future?

SoCalHHR 05-10-2007, 12:01 PM They go in just as pictured: with the large coils on the bottom. (*Wide-spaced coils on top.)

MrVette 05-10-2007, 01:25 PM Does the alignment change at all with the new springs?
I'm guessing it would stay the same since the front springs are not changed.
TruckSHOP.com 05-10-2007, 01:34 PM You will not need to realign after installing the leveling springs.
MrVette 05-10-2007, 01:36 PM Thanks Jeff, didn't think so, but just wanted to make sure. Thinking about getting these!!
SoCalHHR 05-10-2007, 04:02 PM Actually the front camber does change, but it is still within spec so no alignment is needed. Chevy gave us a pretty wide latitude on camber adjustment.
Hope it helps,
Impossibe for front camber to change... No further comment on that!
What will change:
With a 1.6" drop in the rear (Gold Line's spec.) and a 103.5" wheelbase, simple trig says that the car, as viewed from the side, will change in angle relative to a flat surface about 0.9 degrees. That will result in that much more caster angle (GM spec is 3.7* +/- 0.75*) putting the caster just out of spec, but in reality not enough to be concerned with.
The headlight alignment would now go up that 0.9* angle and may need to be dropped a little. So, just check your headlight alignment.
The procedure is an easy do-it-yourself and can be found in the Owner Manual on p. 5-38.
SoCalHHR 05-10-2007, 05:38 PM Ooops CASTER - my bad! (You got me on that one Joe!)
Still, as I said, it's not enough to worry about.
06AmethystHHR 06-16-2007, 11:32 PM what is the easiest way to get the stock springs out. someone said crowbar but what do you do, pry them out?
the_shmoo 06-17-2007, 10:39 AM I found that removong both shock bolts and brake line brackets, then lowering the axle both springs can then by wiggled out fairly easily. Hardest part was geting the rubber bump stop out of the stock springs. Also did not trim the bump stop. Hope this helps.
ymerej_mortsdnil 06-30-2007, 06:36 PM Hello! Today is my 1 year wedding anniversary to my lovely wife, & she got me the best present a guy could ask for! The Gold-Line Leveling Springs. Now I just need to get them installed. I am not sure where I am going to have them installed yet. The only other thing I am wondering is how many people had to adjust the headlights after installing these, and do you need to remove the cover in front of the front wheels in order to adjust them? If it is not necessary then I am not going to mess with it. Those of you who have these, do your headlights seem o.k. with no adjusting?
I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HOW THESE LOOK!
hnewagn 06-30-2007, 07:27 PM I did not adjust mine.

jeremy....
No you don't need to remove the wheel well cover. There is a how-to in your Owners Book....can you believe, they tell you how to adjust the headlights. bet that psssss off the dealers.:thumb:
TomsHHR 06-30-2007, 09:01 PM The headlight adjusters are under the hood strut mounts, they require a hex wrench.

ymerej_mortsdnil 07-09-2007, 07:23 PM I just got my leveling springs today, I am getting them installed soon!
They did not come with any instructions, is there somewhere that the instructions can be downloaded online?
Basically, they are pretty much 'plug & play', right? The larger coils go at the bottom and no trimming of the bump stops is required, am I correct? Anything else I should know?
I have also seen that other thread about folks experiencing 'noise' with their springs. :( I really hope this doesn't happen with mine, 'cause I want that 'level' look!:thumb:
ymerej_mortsdnil 07-19-2007, 12:51 AM Well, I FINALLY got my Leveling Springs installed today, & I LOVE MY HHR WITH IT'S NEW LOOK! WOW!
I noticed it especially when I pulled her in the garage tonight...it is going to be so much easier to polish the top of the roof at the rear of the vehicle now! & THE LOOK IS NO COMPARISON TO STOCK!!! The ride is GREAT too! I drove her 120 miles with them & it is GREAT!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED MOD!!!:thumb:

WOW...
Looks GREAT Jeremy!!!
I've had mine on for over a month and couldn't be happier. Now only a more level look from the side but definitely easier to wash / dry and wax the roof...
I definitely would recommend doing a little tweek to lower the headlight beams. It was quite noticable at night that the leveling springs installed raised the aim of the headlights. I just found a level floor and adjusted them up against a wall...
Your Summit White ROCKS!!!
