View Full Version : Broken Moon Roof
I was out running a few errands this afternoon, and at one of my stops, I was going to open the sunroof. As the sunroof was opening, I heard a crack!  After a quick "look see" it was quite obvious what it was.......

I had made the dealer my next stop on my errand list. Can you believe they actually wanted to keep Dory for the rest of the day ? (was 3:30 at the time) Um, what's there to diagnose, I can understand that the part might have to be ordered and then take a day to fix, but for a diagnosis? Well after getting the manager involved, the part was ordered after only 5 minutes of "diagnosis".
HillsdaleHHR 04-03-2007, 05:33 PM    Never seen something like that happen!! There was no need for them to keep the car!?! What were they thinking
There was no need for them to keep the car!?! What were they thinking
Hence the reason for the manager involvement!
Interested 04-03-2007, 05:38 PM What were they thinking
They probably were thinking that a lot of people don't want to drive around a car with a broken sunroof.
HillsdaleHHR 04-03-2007, 05:39 PM They probably were thinking that a lot of people don't want to drive around a car with a broken sunroof.
I would much rather have my car than leave it at the dealership any day!!

Definately the way I felt!

Harpozep 04-03-2007, 09:55 PM Damn, I gots me a sunroof.... Is this going to be a constant breakage item on the HHR sunroofs or are you just special?
Time will tell. Report back, and good luck !
Black Rose 04-03-2007, 10:09 PM Yikes!!!
Where did the broken glass (that's what it looks like) come from?
courthousedeb 04-03-2007, 10:16 PM Holy crap Jay. Good thing you live in Florida and not here where it can still snow at any moment.
Sorry to hear about Dory....no reason for them to keep her if they don't have the part.

HEY SINDY, speaking of patients visiting doctors,

Did they say anything on what caused it to Brake and has this been happening to other HHR in the past or is this the 1st one that this Dealership has seen.
Rudy
SindyDix 04-03-2007, 10:36 PM That is correct. I downloaded the image, then uploaded it to our galllery to edit that orginal post the image resided at. It was a huge image to start with.
Me? Get rims? Nawh.... I like my 17"'s.
Snoopy 04-03-2007, 10:48 PM Jx3....
That isn't part of the actual sunroof is it? Looks like the "pop up windscreen" thinky !!!
Jay

Rudy
They didn't have a clue as to what may have caused the plastic to "snap". From the confusion on the tech's face as well as that of the manager, I'd say it's a 1 off problem.(lucky me)
Jx3....
That isn't part of the actual sunroof is it? Looks like the "pop up windscreen" thinky !!!
It does connect to the windscreen, kind of snaps on to it, but it is actually part of the sunroof itself. I will take/post pic of different angle tomorrow.
Yikes!!!
Where did the broken glass (that's what it looks like) come from?
Hmmm......No broken glass, maybe it's just the light shining of the greased up track?
TCRNCOB 04-04-2007, 08:39 AM Dory is spending way to much time in the car hospital. She might need daily meds like her owner....... :roflol:

The plastic piece that snapped is part of the "unit" that looks like it is "pop rivited" to the sunroof itself.

OZONE 04-06-2007, 05:22 PM Hows your moonroof?? Mine had a small hook break that holds the spring for the wind deflector. It's held in by two rivets, but dealer had to order and install new entire moonroof. Major job compared to two rivets and a hook. Now has to go back to replace weatherstrip torn during installation.
OZONE 04-06-2007, 05:42 PM Same happened to mine. They said part was non-replaceable. Ordered and installed new moonroof. Did they replace the broken hook on yours or the whole moonroof?
HillsdaleHHR 04-06-2007, 05:52 PM He is waiting on parts.
He is waiting on parts.
Thanks D!:thumb:
Part(s) are on order. I was not told what all is being ordered/replaced.
I will be sure to post what needs/has been done to repair the same prob with mine.
sjssk 04-10-2007, 11:44 AM Mine is being replaced today......
captain howdy 04-10-2007, 12:51 PM No problems what so ever with mine. Not yet at least.
OZONE 04-10-2007, 04:56 PM Mine broke in the same spot. The hook that holds the spring in place for the wind deflector broke. Mine wasn't plastic, it's made of white metal. Probably cheaper than plastic. They replaced entire sunroof. Now waiting for new weather strip and for them to adjust glass so it doesn't contact metal roof when partially open.
I will be sure to post what needs/has been done to repair the same prob with mine.
Well, Dory spent the better part of Thursday at the dealer getting the sunroof fixed. The frame for the sunroof was replaced. When I tried opened the roof, while in the service area, the windscreen only popped up maybe half an inch (sorry didn't have camera with me). Showed to service advisor, he tried telling me that Dory was hit with the latest software update and this must be as far up as it should go. When I told him that I wasn't satisfied with that answer, the manager was called over. He said he had never seen a windscreen pop up that little, and had a tech take it to look at. 5 min later, Dory was returned to me with the screen raising to it's normal position.
FYI.........for all you who don't like the screen popping up, it is adjustable! Don't know how, but it is.
Well, it's been several days since the sunroof was fixed, and all appears to be fine. However, the tech who reinstalled the headliner isn't to bright. When he put the sunvisor back on, he did not orientate the part correctly.:nono:
Now when I pull the sunvisor down, it pops out of the clip.
Easily fixed as I already have had the sunvisor removed. Nothing major but just annoying.
HillsdaleHHR 04-23-2007, 06:53 PM At least its fixed. Im still waiting on my seat parts
Airborne_Beachbum 05-30-2007, 09:25 AM Glad all of yours were replaced without too much of a hassle. I will be having mine replaced as well. At least its still under warranty, by 250 miles. Went to a dealership while vacationing over the long weekend and have a work order to show that it was turned in before the warranty ran out - had another 600 miles to drive before getting home which would have put me well over the 36,000 miles limit.
calgaryhhr 05-30-2007, 11:18 AM Hey Y'all,
this weekend the hook on the passenger side of my windscreen broke. I know have the same problem as some of you guys. It's a real shame, especially because I rarely ever have my sunroof closed and now I have to keep it closed unless I want to force the arm under the sunroof every time I have to close it.
But anyways, I have an appointment on Tuesday to have it looked at. I can't believe that the fix for this is so much work.
I can't believe that the fix for this is so much work.
It's those dammed rivets!!:cussing:
Airborne_Beachbum 06-02-2007, 12:24 AM Well, took my HHR in for the initial inpection to get the sunroof replaced. They said that there are no modules available and it could take up to 4 weeks to get one in. I'm hoping that as long as my work orders predating the end of my warranty show this problem that I won't have to pay out of pocket for it.
A good note, they also looked at the dash glove box and have order a replacement for it. The button to open it broke off from the pins that hold it to the lid. That work will be completed on Monday.
sjssk 06-02-2007, 07:57 AM My dealer replaced my sunroof and it only took a few days to get the parts. They might be pulling your chain......
Airborne_Beachbum 06-18-2007, 10:17 PM Well, here's the update. i was on vacation when it broke and couldn't stay in town long enough to order parts. When I got back to my temporary duty station there wasn't enough time left in school to order the parts. So, today I had a day off and went into the local Chevy dealership and told them the whole story. The good part is that they will cover it under the warranty since it's an on going work order even thought I am 1,500 miles over. What confuses me is that I have work orders from two other dealerships saying what is wrong and what parts need to be order. But, this dealership still wants me to bring in my HHR so they can check it out for themselves. Is there no trust among Chevy parts department? I guess I am just annoyed that I will be without my car for two days - one for the initial inspection and one for the install.
calgaryhhr 06-18-2007, 10:23 PM I've been waiting a week for the parts to arrive for the repair, talked to the parts department this morning and they said that they have one of the two parts necessary. The other part is in transit and should be here this week, or maybe next week, they really have no idea.
Airborne_Beachbum 06-18-2007, 11:16 PM You would think Chevy would catch on that this is a problem and make more parts available.
There are a lot of forum users that have experienced this problem and we are just a small percentage of owners. Plus, you have to figure the owners that didn't have the sunroof origanally that want to install it as a "factory aftermarket" piece.
Airborne_Beachbum 06-28-2007, 05:36 PM My HHR is finally fuly functional again. Just picked it up from the service department. Due to the lack of time spent in any one city and the delivery time for the parts to be delivered, I visited 4 dealerships in 4 different states.
calgaryhhr 06-28-2007, 06:42 PM Good to hear that you are cruising with the wind in your hair again.
My new sunroof/parts came in on Tuesday June 19 and still have not been replaced. My car has been in the body shop for the chip problem and the body and service department couldn't get coordinated and nothing has been done yet. I picked my HHR from the body shop yesterday and need to drop it off again next week to get the sunroof fixed, not to mention to get the crappy body shop work re-done.
jaime_g 06-28-2007, 07:19 PM This exact same thing happened to my sunroof. It actually looks like an exact image because mine broke on the same side and I also have a Daytona Blue HHR. I thought for a split second that it actually was a picture of my car. The dealer had the nerve to say it has never happened before.
Curmudgeon 07-03-2007, 11:49 AM Obviously a design/manufacturing problem My roof's windscreen arm broke as well..little pot metal hook/hinge busted...and it means a whole new sunroof frame assembly!
Took about 10 days to get the part and about 6 hours labor to pull the entire roof assembly out and replace. Of course, the fact I'd put in a roof mounted DVD player for the backseat didn't make the mechanics job any easier !
johnbrum 07-17-2007, 04:40 PM Same happened to mine, need to take it in to get it fixed as well.
Wheelie7 07-17-2007, 05:10 PM Ok..1st off, Wheelie says Sorry about Dory's accident, he sends Dory flowers and a speedy recovery.=)
http://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/files/3/6/1/8/Wheelie1.jpg
2nd, I WAS going to get Wheelie with a sun roof, but they didn't have any HHR's in stock that had them...with what I'm seeing here, I think it was better if Wheelie did not have it..
But Wheelie and I wish you all that have this problem a speedy recovery from the Chevy Doctor clinic!:thumb:
calgaryhhr 08-24-2007, 10:29 PM So, I finally got my sunroof fixed a couple of weeks ago.
I had two problems with the repair. For one the headliner had little greasy, oily fingerprints on it. This has not been taken care of because the headliner is going to be dropped for a 4th time.
My second problem was that when I pulled the sunscreen shut it would catch on something right at the beginning.
Well, I told the service department about that last week and they looked at it again. It looks like part of the shade was catching on part of the drip tray or something like that. I'd grab my service report but it's down in the car. So they fixed that but noticed another problem.
During the previous repair I guess someone overtightened a screw. When they were trying to adjust things this screw broke. So, they had to order another new "sunroof module" in order to fix this problem. It's been almost two weeks since this has been ordered and it appears as though these parts, "sunroof module," is back ordered and it might take some time. This is also why I haven't had them clean my headliner yet because it's coming out yet again.
My sunroof works fine so I don't see the point in replacing it again but if they want to do that I guess it's all good. They are either being good to me by reporting this minor broken piece and replacing everything or they are just trying to get some extra warranty work from GM.
The saga continues
calgaryhhr 09-18-2007, 11:05 PM Now, that I have my third sunroof in the HHR I've noticed that something might be different.
When I pulled the shade back into the headliner I noticed that there was a flat, thin piece of metal that span the entire width of the sunroof. This piece seems to be a few inches deep and sits just above the sun shade and retracts back into the headliner with the sunroof when opened.
I don't recall that being there before or maybe I just never noticed it.
I also noticed that when I close my sunshade I can push up on it, where the handle is, and it will lift a good half inch or more. I don't remember this happening at all before.
Have they made some fairly major changes to the design of the sunroof or am I just completely crazy?

Don't seem to have this w/ my replacement.

My sunshade doesn't seem to have that much lift/give in it. Maybe 1?8 inch tops. But the it does seem to take a little more effort to slide.
laborkei 09-24-2007, 08:19 PM For sure...
I left a vehicle once for some work. I have a second vehicle.
Then I saw it a few hours later with a bunch of mechanics in it going to lunch.
I was pissed. I took a picture with my cell phone, and showed them when I picked it up when they denied it! Lost my business...
cheezehead 10-01-2007, 09:44 PM Mine broke too, same side also.Going in tomr.
Mine broke too, same side also.Going in tomr.
Don't let them keep the HHR, not even for an hour. Get the SM to look at it immediately and order the part(s). Then expect to wait a week for it to arrive.
sweetmama 10-01-2007, 10:56 PM I am almost afraid to use to use the roof.... when I go to close mine it squeals like it is in pain........
Well add me to the list experiencing that GM quality feel.
Went to open the sunroof yesterday and ..... POP!!
Same exact spot as the OP in this thread. Went by the dealer today and quickly showed them what was broke. Of course, not in stock, nor in the regional warehouse. About a week to get. Got to hand it to my dealer, though. Quick & easy and out in 5 min. They'll call when it's in.
Kingfrog 10-12-2007, 04:41 PM If it were me I would have them remove that whole curtain spoiler.
calgaryhhr 10-12-2007, 06:09 PM The windscreen actually makes a huge difference in the amount of wind noise. It would be pretty unbearable at speed to have the sunroof open without the screen.
I think it's more a matter of redesigning or making the material more resistant to breakage.
warrenstilwell 10-26-2009, 02:08 PM Yet another problem with my beloved 06 sunburst orange HHR - all these little things add up.
Opened the sunroof and <Snap> broken clip! I removed the wind deflector myself (only 2 screws and slide it out of the other (working) clip.
Can anyone think of a good reason to not substitute a plastic wind deflector fro the factory unit? The kind that clips in - no 3m tape jobbies...
I know I need a deflector bc too much air will flow into the headliner and eventually do damage.
I also realize their kinda ugly but I found some low-profile ones on ebay that look 'ok'.
Can't spend another dime on minor repair on this car. Every time I take it to the dealer it comes back fixed but with new cosmetic problems (like broken door pocket)
Harpozep 11-02-2009, 09:28 AM How much is the part at the a Chevy dealer?
The broken armature one?
Lee3333 11-23-2009, 09:03 AM Add me to this list. Yesterday I heard that familiar 'POP' and I saw the drivers side piece broken. I also just removed the 2 philips head screws and the back of the deflector just slides out. Cant believe that the entire frame has to be replaced. Chevy should have planned better and either made the weaker link in the system on the deflector or had the hinge part separate from the rest of the frame.
I never was fond of the system-seemed complicated and fragile. I am looking into one of the deflectors like warrenstilwell mentioned. I never saw the kind that pop in without needing tape. Any body have any leads for it? I replaced my factory side window deflectors that taped on with the in-channel ones, and would prefer the same for the moonroof. But, how could it fit and allow the roof to completely close without leaking???

Lee, I believe that originally when that piece broke that the whole tray assembly had to be replaced.
But I think I saw where (stupid) GM finally came out with the base piece. Just drill out the rivets and replace.
Maybe one of the dealer guys can confirm this.

Lee3333 11-23-2009, 10:45 AM Thanks. I just ordered mine from HHR Boutique.
Doctuh 04-13-2010, 12:44 PM I am going to get my sunroof repair in a few months, when I have time and am done with some other modifications. I believe that the replacement rails for the sunroof are of an improved design. The dealer wants to replace both, even though only one broke, for this reason. Has anyone had a repaired sunroof fail a SECOND TIME? If so, then it's pointless to fix it back to factory specifications, and an external wind deflector is the only rational choice. The dealer says he's done a few sunroof repairs, and none has ever come back a second time. Also, not only did my sunroof rail break, but also a piece broke off the driver's side end of the wind deflector assembly. This is a small piece held only only by a single Torx screw. Unfortunately, GM will only sell the complete assembly. Another reason I'm holding off on the repair is that I am hoping that someone who gave up on the factory repair still has the wind deflector available and would be willing to sell it (or the end part I need) used.
irshramu 02-07-2011, 12:59 PM How much did it cost you? I have the exact same issue with a broken hand on the sunroof DAMN !!! Does anyone know if the repairs can be made by myself and if by the dealer how much can I expect to get screwed over by?

Bring it down and find out, is it out of warrentee?? Most people have 3 yrs 36k or more.
As for this post, this car was made in Mexico, nothing suprises me anymore.

Either laziness or sheer busy-ness of the day. EITHER WAY. I've always had it diagnosed before going in, telling them my 2 cents, and letting them find the problem.. been 30min at most.
bk94si 02-07-2011, 01:39 PM I hate reading threads like this (and the ones about acorns making dents, door handles breaking off), makes me wonder if I chose the right car. :(

hhrjeff 09-17-2011, 03:13 PM HELP! Mine just broke today so I removed the entire windscreen unit. Now the roof will not close all the way. It stops when it gets within 1" of closing. If I then push the other switch on the right, it closes all the way but the rear of the glass is below the level of the roof. If I then push the right switch the other way, it opens 1" again.
It rains a lot in Florida. How do I get the roof to close all the way???????
GDZHHR 10-10-2011, 07:03 PM well mine broke today, any know of a windscreen that work and is an easy install?
Joe Schulte 10-10-2011, 07:32 PM Anyone notice it's quieter with the windscreen down?
As for the dealer diagnosis, chill!
I manage a bodyshop and the two warranty things we see are sunroof related, typically leaks, and wind noise. The shittiest warranty jobs, and none of my guys get paid for half the time they have to put into them. Granted you have a simple, hey it's broken, replace a part job, others are not and I've had an Outlook tie up a tech's bay for 3 days while my collision work got put off due to a waterleak and GM's wonderful sunroof designs.
THE BATMAN 10-10-2011, 09:02 PM It's not such an easy fix, I had my sunroof completly replaced at 16000 miles at a cost in parts of close to 1250 , Because they could'nt adjust it right, Said hey , We messed it up more , And the whole things coming out and being replaced, Over 60,000 miles later it purrs like a kitten, I put white lith. grease on it every so offten , No problems.
Keeping my fingers crossed .
:batman:
GDZHHR 10-10-2011, 10:10 PM well mine broke today, anyone know of a windscreen that works and is an easy install?
anybody?
bandit12 10-18-2011, 09:37 AM Same problem here. Out of warranty and not about to spend a fortune for a little cheap clip.
Pizzaman 10-18-2011, 10:44 PM I took mine out after it broke and just put on an aftermarket ventvisor shade in front of the sunroof. Made much more sence and saved $$$.
Z-Man 10-24-2011, 10:26 AM Mine broke on the passenger side but I am able to close it but I have to hold the bar as the sun roof closes but hell I was going to take it in to get fixed but I see after reading a few other statements I guess I will just assist it when I close the sunroof. I have 160.200 mile on the Z-Ride and the only probles I have ever really had was the Swar Bar Link Kit on the front end and that was only $250.00 for repair so I guess I am very lucky. I do not get on this site that much but I will tell you that the Z-MAn has missed a lot of my good friends and a lot of Pizza and BBQ parties. I am doing well I just had my 16th Surgery and had to go for another on the 2 of Nov 2011 but my Throat Cancer is some what Clear for now.
Rudy - Your Crazy Z-Man
Z-Man 10-24-2011, 10:30 AM Mike
Good luck and God Bless - I really don't need mine as I have the Sunroof Visor on the top of my Hhr. :-)
Rudy
DjLBM 10-26-2011, 06:07 PM Mine broke last summer. GM told me sorry about your luck like they did with several other known issues. 70000 miles and this thing is falling apart. as for the sunroof, I just pulled the deflector and bought an avs one that sticks to the roof. problem solved. Thanks GM.
