Thanks HillsdaleHHR 04-04-2007, 10:40 AM Do you realize what you have just started? :D There are some oil change threads you might want to search. One of many discussions here: Oil Life (http://chevyhhr.net/forums/showthread.php?t=6414&page=6&highlight=life) jx3 04-04-2007, 10:42 AM Changed to M1 in November. 6500+ miles so far. Black Rose 04-04-2007, 12:16 PM I'll throw my :2cents: in on this :D How many miles? With synthetic, follow what the OLM tells you. The OLM was calibrated for dino oil, so for synthetic it will tell you to change the oil before you really need to. When it says to change the oil, get a UOA (used oil analysis) done to see how much active ingredient is left in the oil. The lab will then give you an indication of how much farther you can go on the next oil change. It takes a bit of trial and error to find the ideal point to change it out, as each motor reacts differently to the various types of motor oil. Another good synthetic motor oil to look at is Pennzoil Platinum. Someone on this site did a UOA on it with the 2.4L engine and the results were phenomenal. For the record, I have yet to decide if I am going to run synthetic in my HHR, since the current generation of motor oils (API SM/ILSAC GF-4) are so good. Right now I am at 4,200 miles on dealership bulk oil and the OLM is saying 39% oil life left. solman98 04-04-2007, 12:40 PM For the HHR, I'm using M1, I will go by the OLM. Oil changes, even with syn are still cheap insurance. For my wifes MPV, I have been also using M1 in it since it's first change. I usually went 5K intervals. The last change I did 10K "just to see". 10K still looked fine, but I'm going to switch back to 5K for my own piece of mine. SoCalHHR 04-04-2007, 12:42 PM I've been running M1 in HHR1 since 1k miles. Here's how I do it: After the oil change, I reset the oil life indicator to 100%, then run 3500mi. I then reset the OLI again, and run another 3500mi, for a total of 7,000mi per oil change. M1 has been "real-life" tested (*labs actually have folks running over 12k miles between changes who send in samples for testing), at extremely high mileages with no breakdown, and minimal contaminants (*which of course depends on the previous condition of the engine). Bottom line: 7,000 miles is no where near the protection lifespan M1 can provide, but it does halve the oil change interval while helping justify the increased cost of synthetic oil changes. Hope it helps, night31 04-04-2007, 08:19 PM I have custom blended oil in mine. There is a company here locally, will ship nationally, that custom blends a synthetic oil. Its not just a 5w30 or 10w30, I believe the blend that I am currently running is 12w35. I will go 10k before changing. Ran this in my 2002 Blazer and had phenomenal results, even increased gas mileage. Don't know how many of you follow NASCAR, I don't follow to close, but his oil and fuel additive was in the race car that was disqualified for cheating as they called it. Below is a link to his site. Be sure to read the article on the main page about the test GM performance did. http://www.bndautomotive.com night31 04-06-2007, 06:46 AM I talked to the owner of the company yesterday, the only reason why they found any of his products was because in his fuel additive he adds a red dye to color it and it left a residue. He already has several large orders for his product in clear, we won't say from who. He is also supposed to be bringing be a couple of oil analysis done by 2 people that use his oil. One is from an explorer that went 11,300 miles before an oil change and the other is from a sports car I believe that went 7,000 miles. Will scan and post them when I get them. mizzouHHR 04-06-2007, 08:15 AM I started using M1 Synthetic at 3000 miles, and go by the OLM also, but usually will change it around 25-30%. Perhaps more than I need to, but old habits die hard. |
