View Full Version : Niagara Falls M&G/mini GTG - June 23rd
Desert Coyote 05-13-2007, 10:38 AM mitzkitty is going to be in the area with her husband (sorry, no car with, they're renting one here), and was interested in meeting with some of us in the Niagara area. Post here if you're interested. I'll bring some GM Powertrain show information with me. The date we're looking at is June 23rd (Saturday), ideally thinking we would meet up at the Niagara Factory Outlets and cruise down NF Blvd to the Falls. Any takers? :thumb:
captain howdy 05-13-2007, 10:43 AM That's the American side right? I always get confused with what's on the American side and what's on the Canadian side. :red:
Desert Coyote 05-13-2007, 10:58 AM It's on the American side, on Factory Outlet Boulevard, right off of both NF Blvd and the 190.
captain howdy 05-13-2007, 11:01 AM I'll run the idea past my wife and see if she's interested. We might be there. I'd love to meet mitzkity and you.
ymerej_mortsdnil 05-13-2007, 12:04 PM (sorry, no car with, they're renting one here),
speaking of renting cars, I wasn't sure if everyone had heard of the hertz 'fun' collection, which includes the HHR. I have to say though, I don't particularly care for the comments from some of the folks on the link below, but I love the idea that you can be guaranteed an HHR when you need to rent a car!:thumb:

HHRDE 05-13-2007, 12:28 PM Wish we could go, we LOVE Niagara Falls!!!! Check out Academy Park, I hear there is a Pt Cruiser show happening there that weekend....... ;)

DC, if your planning on making copies and have to pay for them don't I'll chase Donna from Tri Five Car Club for more.:thumb:
mitzkity 05-14-2007, 01:35 AM I we really can meet some of you, and I have to say that Desert Coyote has gone out of his way to give us ideas of things to do on our down time in that area. I don't have a passport or I'd be going to the Canadian side, which I hear is even better.
Docwylie 05-14-2007, 10:40 AM Count me in for the 23rd! I might even have Tropicar Jr. ready to show off that weekend. I like the idea of crashing the PT Cruiser get-together and Lewiston is a nice spot anyway. It's just a few miles north of the Factory outlet Mall area.
Mitzkity, I don't think you need the passport to get into Canada until January 2008.

Firewatcher 05-14-2007, 01:01 PM I'll run the idea past my wife and see if she's interested. We might be there. I'd love to meet mitzkity and you.
CH must have picked up some new recipes on "Cannibals Cooking in Canola" or "Dracula Does Desserts" on the after midnite food channels.
mitzkity 05-14-2007, 03:15 PM Firewatcher - I clicked out your JOIN US link - thought maybe you were a cult leader or something HAHAHAHA --- dang, I already AM a member of that crazy cult!!
Desert Coyote 05-14-2007, 04:38 PM DC, if your planning on making copies and have to pay for them don't I'll chase Donna from Tri Five Car Club for more.:thumb:
Actually, I was going to try bugging my wife for forms from the plant, but if you have a contact in Tri-Five, that's cool too.
mitzkity 05-17-2007, 10:32 PM We have added two possible items to our agenda and I wanted opinions of "locals".
Friday afternoon, 2hr cruise to see the Lockport Locks on the Erie Canal
Saturday night after our get-together, a Ghost Walk complete with lanterns in Niagara-by-the-Lake.
These 2 things sound so neat to me - what do you think?
Lastly, how do I find out if it's true that I can go across the Canada border still, without a passport.
Thanks, folks.
captain howdy 05-17-2007, 10:42 PM I'm pretty sure you don't need a passport until 2008 unless you're flying. I don't have a passport and I've never had a hard time going over other than the time I went with my buddy J who had a pending DWI at the time. They held us for a while, searched us, searched the car, searched our positions, and turned us right back around just to have it repeated on the American side.
minttbird 05-18-2007, 08:06 AM no problems on the border... definatly visit the locks in lockport....

Here you go:
Current Passport Regulations
The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States, according to the US Department of State. US citizens may currently travel to and from Mexico, Canada, Panama, the Caribbean and Bermuda using a US birth certificate with embossed state seal and driver's license, rather than a passport
Docwylie 05-18-2007, 11:30 AM Mitzkity- Both of your ideas are great. The canal cruise out of Lockport is interesting and Niagara-On-The-Lake is always great! Very quaint and as close to finding British charm as you'll find this side of the Atlantic.

When we get into June, we can hammer out the particulars (i.e. where to meet, where to go, etc.). :thumb:
Docwylie 05-20-2007, 07:38 PM It's quite possible we'll be helping Mitzkity celebrate a Ducks Stanley Cup win and the avenging of the Sabres loss to the hated Senators!
GO DUCKS!!!!!
mitzkity 05-20-2007, 07:50 PM Wasn't that a beauty? We were screaming so loud the dog almost peed!
Docwylie 05-20-2007, 09:34 PM The only thing better for me would have been for the Sabres to have scored the OT goal against the Sens yesterday...but they didn't...so now (at least until next year) the Ducks are my team!
On to Game 6!
Hellraisehr 05-25-2007, 01:59 AM id like to come along and meet some of my fellow WNY hhrs count me in .plus ill need the reg form for the power train show ,desert,i hope that wont be to late to submit it.

No worries on lateness for the Powertrain auto show entries, the due date isn't until August (Aug. 10, if I'm not mistaken) for preregistration. BlackHHR06 is trying to get us a stack of entry forms that he'll bring with.
As far as location where to meet, at the Factory Outlets there is a section of the parking lot adjacent to an Elks club, kind of away from the mall itself. Ideally, that's probably the best place to powwow before heading to the Falls proper, since the only time I ever see folks parking in that area is Christmas. :thumb: Times will come later as we work things through on this, but feel free to offer suggestions of meeting times here!
Hellraisehr 05-26-2007, 02:47 AM glad to hear about the powertrain show ,i was getting a little worried there ,this should be a good meet ,can we really crash that pt show or whatever it might be ,id like to roll up there and show them how it was supposed to be made
fastsuv 05-26-2007, 10:14 AM I'm going to try to make it on June 23rd. I'd like to at least be able to do the Niagara Falls run, but probably won't be able to do the Canada part. So you can write me in as a "hopefully" for June 23rd.
I'm still a definite for the Tonawanda Engine Plant show.
Steve
Docwylie 05-26-2007, 08:24 PM Based on what I saw on the PTCruiser event website, it looks like trying to get into their enclave would be difficult, and I don't know that we want to start any trouble in Niagara County.
BlackHHR06 05-26-2007, 09:12 PM  Have in my position 12 registration forms for GM Power Plant Car Show. I can get more if needed. And rest asured preregistration cut off is Aug. 10.

My wife and I will tentatively try to make the June 23rd get together, at least to get to meet everyone. Not sure if we will be able to stay but it sure would be nice to meet the faces behind the forum names.
Also, is there any way I can get a registration form for the Powertrain show, either by fax or e-mail?
Thank's, Bigallis1................

Don Battista 05-28-2007, 02:22 PM Can't wait for June 23rd get together & Tonowanda Engine Plant get together in August.
Were leaving Florida May 31st heading for Western New York.:thumb:
mitzkity 05-29-2007, 04:33 PM I was feeling so left out --- anybody got an HHR we can borrow LOL! I checked into hubby's car rental place and they don't even do HHRs. Oh well, maybe I'll put my extra .net decal on whatever we get temporarily.
Docwylie 05-29-2007, 05:25 PM I just saw a dark gray HHR sitting in an Avis lot in Orchard Park yesterday. If you can't find an HHR then look for a Cobalt. At least they're cousins!
mitzkity 05-29-2007, 05:29 PM I think Mattel uses Hertz - sadly.
Docwylie 05-29-2007, 09:45 PM Gee...that's too bad...but maybe Hertz has some fun cars in their inventory in lieu of an HHR.
Or...you could visit a local Chevy dealer...ask to take an HHR out on a test drive..and then just not return it until you're ready to depart for Anaheim!
mitzkity 05-30-2007, 06:41 PM Doc!! I'm just a mild-mannered piano teacher -- every lie I tell is written right across my face! (YOU DO IT!;) )
Docwylie 05-30-2007, 07:33 PM There's a HUGE Chevy dealer on Grand Island (ner Niagara Falls)...so I just may give it a try! :D
catzcradle 05-31-2007, 11:48 AM With my luck, as we're getting a "full sized" since I have to drag the other Mattel-ites around as I'll be the only one with a car, it will probably end up being a ford tarus or something similarly boring.
Docwylie 05-31-2007, 03:05 PM Will Mattel spring for a Chevy Suburban? At least that way there would be a symbolic link to the HHR. ;)
mitzkity 05-31-2007, 11:50 PM Gosh what a great idea, though. I'm going to look around - I'm not just going to accept a plain ole CAR CAR.
Desert Coyote 06-05-2007, 06:14 PM Little update on this ... my wife is going to snag us some GM Tonawanda swag (little stuff) for this GTG. I've got some swag from my workplace (strategically altered to our purposes) that I'd like to give out as well.
Hope to have a fun time with all of y'all on the 23rd.
Oh, and just an aside, my wife is very enthusiastic about the Ducks potentially clinching on Wednesday. :thumb:
Don Battista 06-05-2007, 07:10 PM Sounds great, Can't wait till the 23rd.
Docwylie 06-05-2007, 07:45 PM Any ideas on what we're going to do or where we're going to go after meeting up at the outlet mall, DC? Are we looking for a place to do a mini-"Cruise"?
Desert Coyote 06-07-2007, 02:15 PM Any ideas on what we're going to do or where we're going to go after meeting up at the outlet mall, DC? Are we looking for a place to do a mini-"Cruise"?
Well, figured that we could get together at the mall, form up and convoy down Niagara Falls Blvd. to the Falls, park and get some pictures, and explore around the park. If anyone else has any other ideas for things to do, I'm open to suggestions. (BTW, "explore around the park" by implication includes anyone crossing to the Canadian side.) :thumb:
Docwylie 06-07-2007, 02:28 PM Souns like a plan. We could cross over to Goat Island and park at the main parking lot (cost = $10 per car, same as the lots near the Rainbow Bridge). That affords easy access to good viewing spots on the American side for photo ops plus there's a restaurant right there. There's also a trolley-type bus that cruises around the park.
If we get lucky we might find an unattended PT Cruiser to hoist over the Falls.
(On second thought, let's forget that option... I think it might be a Federal offense or something.)

That was exactly what I was thinking, minus the "let's make a PT an artifical reef" bit. ;)
Myself and my wife, we've never taken the trolleys around the park, most of the time we've just walked the place (when it's warm enough and not windy as hell). Of course she being the engineer, her favorite part of the park is the statue of Tesla by the entrance to the Cave of the Winds. :one:
Docwylie 06-07-2007, 04:52 PM Yeah, you're right. Dropping a PT into the water would be a no-no. Besides, it might hang up on the rocks like that old rusty barge and end up being viewed for the next 100 years (like the old rusty barge).
Anyway...I've driven by that statue of Tesla many times. I work in Niagara Falls and on my lunch hour often drive over to the parking lot at the far end of Goat Island (where to date they haven't started the summer time parking fee) and relax with a fine cigar from Smokin' Joe's. Niagara Falls State Park is kind of a well-kept secret from locals it seems.
minttbird 06-08-2007, 10:35 AM make sure you all drive the river down to lewiston... great views of the gorge from whirlpool park and others
NY HHR 06-08-2007, 10:56 AM Based on what I saw on the PTCruiser event website, it looks like trying to get into their enclave would be difficult, and I don't know that we want to start any trouble in Niagara County.
It wouldn't be a good idea!
NY HHR 06-08-2007, 10:59 AM The is a show in Clarion, PA in August. PTs and HHRs are invited, check out the Race and Street website! It's an EXCELLENT party!! :thumb:

HERE IS THE PLAN!
We'll meet at the Niagara Falls Factory Outlet mall around 9am, in the parking lot section near the Elks club (as close to the Elks club as possible, lots of open space to form up). Sometime between 9:45 and 10am, we'll form up and caravan up Niagara Falls Boulevard straight to Niagara Falls nat'l park. We'll park on Goat Island (parking fee is usually $10), get some pictures and explore as much of the Falls as you wish, including the Canadian side. The Goat Island parking lot is close to a vistor's center with concessions, the Cave of the Winds and the Tesla statue. Going the opposite way toward the Horseshoe Falls, there is a restaurant/gift shop and the Three Sisters Islands (kind of a fun diversion, for the nature lover in you.). Going past the concessions by Tesla is the observation deck for the American and Bridal Veil falls, and further down (IIRC) is the Maid of the Mist. The only thing on the agenda once we're at the Falls is enjoying yourselves. :thumb:
mitzkity 06-08-2007, 09:52 PM My MIL says - on the Canadian side, that we should take some kind of boat ride that takes you down close to the water?? And also, something about a place where you can walk behind the falls? How long shall we plan to be there since this is prob. my only chance to see them.
Hey, StitchII's daddy - - you're a heck of an organizer!! HAHA - if we can't get an HHR, should we get a PT and honor the designer? We are thinking of turning in the rental and trying to get something other than the requisite TAURUS for the weekend.
My MIL says - on the Canadian side, that we should take some kind of boat ride that takes you down close to the water??
How much closer to the water are you going to get if you are on a boat ride?
mitzkity 06-08-2007, 09:59 PM ohhhh, maybe I should have listened better... but she just goes on and on... (worse than me) and I tune her out.
ohhhh, maybe I should have listened better... but she just goes on and on... (worse than me) and I tune her out.
I think this is what she was suggesting.......
MAID OF THE MIST (http://www.maidofthemist.com/en/)
Docwylie 06-08-2007, 10:07 PM It's called the "Maid of the Mist" (the boat ride that takes you right to the base of the Falls) It's an incredible trip not to be missed! You can actually board on either the US or Canadian sides. We'll give you directions that day. The other attraction is called the Cave of the Winds. You elevator down to an area inside the falls and then walk out onto wooden catwalks (perfectly safe...or so they say!) for an upclose and personal view of the falls from down below. This attraction is within walking distance of where we'll be parking. They're both fun, but my personal recommendation is the Maid of the Mist. Other options are helicopter rides over the Falls and a tethered hot-air balloon. Haven't done either one so can't vouch for their worth. You can do all those things on the American side.
Don Battista 06-09-2007, 07:12 AM Sounds great Desert Coyote, We will be there.
Bertland 06-15-2007, 01:07 AM I check with my Girl if she can take a day off from work, If not can you send me a entry form for the show in august!?
I suggest that you should go at least eat at The Rain Forest Café on the Canadian side on Clifton hills, this road it self is a must to see, there are planny of attraction .Click here for info (http://www.cliftonhill.com/), there are every weekend firework over the fall...
Here some pics from last year trips to the falls, just to tease you...

mitzkity 06-15-2007, 02:23 PM Now I'm starting to get really excited! So many things to do!! Um, Wikipedia says there are 2 outlet malls - but one is closed. It is Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls on Military Rd in Niagara, right? I'm mapping everything now.
D.Coyote, why don't you PM me your cell phone no, and your real names, and I'll reply.
I am SO READY to get wet at the FALLS.
mitzkity 06-15-2007, 02:44 PM Oooh, the Nightmares Fear Factory in Niagara Falls- is that good?

I've walked Clifton Hill once, and you're right, it's one of the highlights of the Canadian side. The big attraction for myself and my wife, though, HAS to be the WWE Store. :thumb:
sjssk 06-15-2007, 04:07 PM There is a haunted house accross the street from the Days Inn on Clifton that is the scariest place I have ever been to (other than Terror on Church Street in Orlando). Check it out.

Desert Coyote, just wanted to double check the address of the outlet mall.
Is it, 1900 Military road?
If so, I just ran a mapquest map and I'm only 90 mi and 1hr 35min from where I am in Rochester. Not a bad run.
Still trying to work out some details as we have the g-daughters with us for the summer.
Thank's...........
Bertland 06-19-2007, 09:21 PM Un fortunnaly we can be there, my girl finish work at 7 PM Friday, by the time we leave Montreal I'll have to drive all night to meet you guy's, it about a 8 to 9 hours drive from Montreal to the fall, include a few stop on the way.... :(
Docwylie 06-20-2007, 09:53 AM It's now officially "tourist season" in Niagara Falls...which means that the parking lots on Goat Island are no longer free. The cost per car is $8.00. Lots of things to do however, and it's as nice a park as you'll find.

Desert Coyote 06-24-2007, 11:45 AM Thanks all for your enthusiasm yesterday! :thumb:
We were the last ones to leave the park (almost 4pm: we crossed to Canada for lunch), but it was quite a thrill to see so many HHR's out the rear-view mirror, not to mention the number of heads we turned down Pine Ave through Little Italy. ;) Thank you also to BlackHHR06 for my shiny new set of smoothie locks! (can't wait to install them!)
I have to say, it was quite fun to finally place the cars to the people, and actually get to see the cars I've only read about for months now. :thumb:
I have pictures but have not taken them off my camera yet. Soon's I do, they're hopping up at the Gallery. :one:

jerrbear 06-24-2007, 04:06 PM Sorry it took so long to post but i had a hockey party saturdaynite after returning from the falls. Thank you Desert Coyote for a great gtg i had a good time.:thumb: It was nice to meet so many different people with the same interest the HHR. Hope everyone had a safe trip home. Looking forward to next year and more HHR's. :thumb:
catzcradle 06-25-2007, 02:18 AM That was a blast. We did get down the maid of the mist ride, but we were so tired we never made it to niagra on the lake. We've been home for about an hour an a half, and heading to bed soon.
Thanks for all that showed up, and to Desert Coyote for setting this up.
mitzkity 06-25-2007, 02:29 AM We both just HAD to check in here, though it's near midnight and hubby has to work tomorrow. Thank you Desert Coyote, and all of the rest of you, :thumb: for giving us the classiest escort into Niagara Falls anyone could ask for. We had such a good time! Meeting you folks, of course, was the highlight. We have many photos also, and will post tomorrow. In the meantime, "There's NO PLACE like home!!" We have 7 very happy pets! Hey, cool goodie bag, I dug into it after we got home - that was a very good idea too. :one: An uneventful coupla flights, but we are bushed!!
MrVette 06-25-2007, 04:33 AM Sounds like everyone had a great time!! Thanks for sharing the pics. :thumb:
fastsuv 06-25-2007, 08:07 AM It was even more fun when five of us met Maggie of Race and Street at a car show in Lewiston after we left Niagara Falls. The car show was an all-PT Cruiser show (lots of PTs, all kinds of mods), and when five HHRs showed up together it caused some second looks.
Thanks, Desert Coyote for organizing the event!

Love the pics at the falls. Went there when I was very young, the barge was there then, can't believe it's still there!
mitzkity 06-27-2007, 11:10 PM Thank YOU!!! I will have to say good-bye again now, as we are leaving for the camping trip to Seattle. You guys take good care of the forum!! And send Howdy some nastygrams for not showing up!
mitzkity 07-10-2007, 03:04 AM I got my photos together and wanted to post a link to another forum where you can go look at whatever you wanted to see. There are slideshows from Niagara Falls, the MeetnGreet (which I think I posted), East Aurora, and East Aurora Cemetary, and of course, the SEATTLE camping trip has 3 shows, one just of cars...(the "other" car of course).
