If the car has been sitting for a bit and I then start it up and put it in reverse with the brake applied, there is a loud "sharp" clunk that seems like it is coming from the passenger side.

Anyone experience this?

When I was rotating the tires on the weekend, I noticed there is a fair amount of rotational play between the rotor and the hub. I am thinking this noise might simply be the hub moving in reverse and stopping when it contacts the back side of the stud hole. The noise was there before I did the rotation, so it's not me :D

Anyway, the car is going in next week for a few other issues, so I'll get this looked at as well.

EDIT: Just discovered there is a TSB for this issue:

99-04-20-002D JUN 06 A/T - Clunk When Shifting From PARK/DRIVE/REVERSE

So with the TSB, does that mean that this is a widespread problem? I've experienced the same thing.

I've been hearing that same thing for as long as I can remember. Haven't had it looked into though.

I Googled the TSB number and it's a widespread "problem" across numerous vehicles, going back as far as 1984.

Probably related to driveline slack or something like that.

An update.

When I took the HHR in to get this noise looked at in May, they couldn't reproduce the problem.

I took the HHR back to the dealership today for a second attempt at getting it looked at, and between the tech and his supervisor they were able to reproduce the problem and isolate where the noise was coming from.

The right side hub had gone bad.
