View Full Version : Drivers wiper arm rubs on hood when arm is lifted?
Goose 05-25-2007, 12:37 PM I noticed this on quite a few HHR's before I bought so it is not something of a surprise. If you lift the arm like you would to wipe windows, clear snow etc, it rests on the edge of the hood. While that is fine, the motion of lifting it into place rubs the arm across the edge of the hood a bit. I can definitely see a black mark on the edge of the hood and it feels a bit rough so something is going on there. (Wearing paint down)
Is the arm adjustable so it doesn't do this? I saw that some HHR arms do not do this while I was looking but the majority of them do

Black Rose 05-25-2007, 12:41 PM I noticed that when I was waxing mine last weekend. It only took me 7 months to discover that
I don't think it can be adjusted.
GCarp 05-25-2007, 12:47 PM I noticed it too. I thought it was just poor design. I don't think there is any way to fix it though other than just be careful when you lift it. The other thing I noticed is the driver's wiper also contacts the passenger side wiper if you have them both up and try to drop it down first.
While my hood does look like something is rubbing the paint, it is not the wiper arm(s). Yes, I have two marks, each one is right in front of the wiper arms. However, it is not the wipers doing it (still don't know what is), and unless I am pulling the driver's side out to it's max, it does not touch the hood.
BTW.....My hood was replaced 5 months ago, so even if it were to be the wiper arm(s), it would not have worn through so quickly.
solman98 05-25-2007, 01:07 PM Mine comes close, but does not hit the hood. The wipers will bump each other if one is raised before the other (can't remember which should go up first at the moment though).
Maybe it's a Daytona thing....

How does that explain Goose?
Black Rose 05-25-2007, 01:13 PM I wonder if these marks are from final assembly or perhaps after they come out of "paint".
Perhaps the hoods are hung either after painting or on the assembly line before being lowered into position for final assembly. I wonder if there are similar marks on the front of the hood that are hidden by the grille.
Goose 05-25-2007, 01:24 PM Maybe..also mental note to self...don't have the wiper arms up and pop the hood..even that little pop...ugh :red:
Explain me? I can't even do that and we expect others too?

I know that one, I used to keep the wipers up until I was done washing, not with the HHR. I also hit the top part of the fenders under the hood each time. SO I have to remember to put the wipers down before I open the hood.
Snoopy 05-25-2007, 02:31 PM If your wipers are adjusted for the correct sweep......
When turned off they should stop with the top of the blade on the "spot" indicators located on the OEM windshields....one on the lower passenger side, for the passenger wiper....one just off low center for the drivers side.
My wipers do not touch any part of the hood.:thumb:
Goose 05-25-2007, 02:49 PM I'll check it out...thanks Snoopy!

mizzouHHR 05-25-2007, 02:51 PM I'm with Snoopy. Mine to not touch the hood when raised, and I have no paint marks on the edge of the hood.

I only just noticed the indicators on the windshield this past weekend. My wipers line up perfectly with them and do not touch the hood in any way when up either.
captain howdy 05-25-2007, 08:31 PM I haven't noticed any rubbing and my wipers clear my hood just fine. For the hell of it I did a quick check of the gaps. Roughly 3/4" clearance on the passenger side and 1/4" on the drivers side. If your wipers rub your hood then you have a problem. ;)

Goose 05-25-2007, 11:57 PM That's it I have had enough....I have a problem I guess...car is going back tomorrow......................
:p:
Well my wipers as well as the other guys here must have our wipers misaligned...NHHHR...I'd check yours...I noticed this at the dealer and checked out your HHR (thought it touched) and on the Imp Blue one...the Imp Blue one did not touch
I'm guessing this can be adjusted byt the dealer or is it a DIY?

Applenut 05-26-2007, 12:00 AM it's a DIY, 15mm socket, open hood, remove plastic cap from bottom of wiper arm, loosen and adjust...

I am going to check mine in the morning just to make sure. Goose the dealer should be able to adjust them with no problems, should be a relatively quick fix.
Goose 05-26-2007, 01:00 AM Thanks Apple..will check it out

dbarberaz 05-26-2007, 01:10 AM Never noticed, guess in the morning I will have to look
Goose 05-26-2007, 02:13 PM Guys this fix is easier than easy..thanks Apple and Snoopy :one:
Just like Apple said...loosen the 15mm bolt, adjust, retighten...BAM! No more wiper rub
Little things like this make me love this site (among many other things :thumb: )

GCarp 05-26-2007, 09:10 PM Guess I'll have to fix mine too. I just thought they were like fhe old ones - with splines on the shafts.
dbarberaz 05-26-2007, 11:11 PM Well checked mine today and sure enough it has rubbed the paint off. :(
GCarp 05-28-2007, 12:41 PM I adjusted mine. Still hits the hood in the up position - but better. As previously stated, an ezsy and fast fix.

My blades sit just under the spots, but I don't have the OEM wiper blades on my HHR. I use winter blades in the winter and Aerofoil blades in the spring/summer/fall.
I'm not sure if the aftermarket blades sit exactly the same as the OEM ones did. I'll have to put them back on and see I guess :D
raymundojr 05-30-2007, 05:09 AM It may relate on the wiper installation. The wiper arm set up may need to be adjusted in order not to touch the hood when lifted up.As i lift the hood of my car it never touches the wiper arm but its very close like than the distance of the admin spam link edit (http://www.chevyhhr.net) inside the hood.

Thanks for mentioning! I did notice this when I washed mine the other day. Thought it was just a regular thing. I guess I am just used to it varying from car to car. For instance, my Suburban can't raise the wipers at all - they totally hit the hood... I may just do the adjustment you guys are talking about tho. I'd hate to rub off the paint and get a rust spot :(
