Hello to all, this is MR. Retroburban with a tip on replacing the cabin air filter. She got the HHR in July 06, so the manual recommends one year intervals I do believe. We figured that would be pushing it here in Phoenix. So I changed it today, May 27, 2007. WOW THis thing is black!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think we may do a bi-annual change from now on after seeing this. So my tip is check it every 6 months if you live in a dusty environment. It is real simple. Open the glove box, drop the door all the way down. Now look up inside the dash and pop three marked tabs loose. Remove filter. Reversal procedure to install. Took longer to walk out there than to actually change it.

Just my 2 cents on the subject. :D

EBay, keywords 'cabin filter hhr'. Results came up with two sellers as of today.
They both balance near the same in price w/shipping. Take your pick.

Be advised that the filters are two types, charcoal added and plain. The charcoal added ones are dark to begin with and the plain are white. The charcoal types add a little more in the way of filtering and odor reduction. http://www.autobarn.net/boschcabinairfilters.html

So where do you get the charcoal type ones?I think they are available through the dealers. They are more money I am certain. When I was quoted a $31 price for one filter at the local dealer I think that it may have been a charcoal version he would have ordered for me.I said no thanks. http://www.autobarn.net/boschcabinairfilters.html

Just replaced my cabin air filter today, Well I tried to a week ago. Do yourself a favor and don't get the Wix filter. I bought one at Oreilly Auto and had to take it back. When I put it in the car the sides of the filter collapsed inward effectively allowing air to bypass the seal on the sides. The replacement part they transfered from one of their other stores (they didn't stock any at my store) looked like it too had been returned for the same reason. Compared to the Delphi the Wix is flimsy. I ordered some Delphi filters off eBay and the quality of construction and fit is much better. From here on out it is only Delphi

Yeah, the Wix one has pretty flimsy side panels. I did manage to get mine in after calling it a %^&#$@!-%^&(*^% @#$ *& A ^&*%$

I'll be ordering the Delphi ones off of eBay next time.

Does anyone know if company's such as K&N will be coming out with a filter?? I've had K&N's in everything I've ever driven. Love the product. They "breath" better and are cleanable. Maybe they could make one with a "new car" smell with them! Anyone????????????

I've sold K&N filters for a while now and have never seen a cabin filter from them. Mine needs one pretty bad, i think so I'll be making a few calls tomorrow to different filter manufacturers and I'll post what i find tomorrow night (after930pm) so stay tuned

That would be great. This is why I buy K&N's. You pay up front to get one, but they are good for life. It's money well spent in my opinion. I'll be interested to hear your results!!!

Greetings all.........just wondering what your real thoughts are on this "car". I have owned some pretty serious and cool cars/trucks over the years, but I tell ya, nothing has caught me off guard as much as an HHR!! I've had 60's hotrods, an '81 Z28, '88 Monte SS, S-10 with a 350, several Silverado's heavily mod'd, etc, etc, etc. I find myself looking.....GAZING at my HHR like no other vehicle I have owned. I LOVE the look, the stance, everything. I mean, really, it's just a cool looking 'minivan', but I can't help but think Chevy got the retro thing right. I have liked PT Cruisers, but......(excuse me ladies) thought they looked a little girlie for my liking. HHR I have noticed is driven not only by ladies, younger guys, older guys and everyone in between. Every time I'm in mine driving down the road and I see one, it's a wave or thumbs up!! It's like your own exclusive club that the rest of the world does NOT have a clue on. That's saying something now adays. What are your thoughts?!??!?!?!

The ones from the dealer/Delphi are gray (charcoal filtration?).

The one I got from NAPA was completely white and was a pain in the butt to install....the sides are not very strong and it kept compressing. I got it installed but I'll be getting a Delphi one next time.

I bought an OE Delphi and it was bright white. They offer a charcoal filter but I don't think that it comes standard. I found out the hard way that the aftermarket filters are crap. The sides are too flimsy.

I didn't realize there were two types of OE cabin filters.

For the price they want for them at the dealer, they should be gold plated.

okay as promised I called Bosch, Fram, K&N, and a brand called Air Qualitee. I got nowhere with Bosch, Fram and K&N both said they don't do cabin air filters ( though I thought I'd seen some from Fram at one time. The only one I got a yes on was from Air Qualitee with a P/N of AQ1085 for 15.99 from Kragen Auto, these are your standard white filters, comparable to O.E.
Thats all I could come up with, hope it helps a bit.

Am I missing something?

Once upon a time there was no such thing as an "interior air filter", just 1 or 2 or maybe even 4 windows down at road speed. Unless you keep your windows up all the time and the car is in a sealed environment, what's the point?

Without being crase (sp?), I liken this whole situation to the recent increase in emphzima with allied inhalers and peanut allergies.

Is this what the world is coming to? Please let me off.

I never drive with windows down. I am sure I can not be the only one. If I want cool I turn on the A/C. I like the cabin air filter. Mine was quite dirty when I swapped it out and I would much rather the gunk in the filter not my lungs.

Most cars after around 1972 lost the ability to run with any sort of venting in the former tradition of small window vents that opened and interior5 kick panel vents that opened manually. This just left the 2-4 main windows which often began that helicopter flutter they have so perfected now days:roll:

Plus this was the time AC beganinits permanent position as something more than an option in our cars.
Now it seems cars are designed for the windows to be up . when driving.

I was at Wal-Mart yesterday picking up some Mobile1, and they have a book hanging by the filters called "Cabin Filters" and offer them. They had various brands. I didn't see that there the last time I was in there Automotive Department.

The original cabin filter was an actvated carbon impregnated paper filter and hence black. When I replaced mine I got it from Auto Zone (special order) and was just a white paper filter. It took less tha 5 minutes to replace it and most of that time was emptying the glovebox, slap in filter than replace glove box stuff.

Kind of funy, yesterday when I took my HHR in for its Oil Change/Tire rotation I asked if they could look at the air filter. They said air filter was alright, but the cabin filter was real bad.

It was the first time I had heard of the Cabin filer, we have 65,000 miles on it so I am guessing it was pretty nasty. (I saw it, it did look like the heppa vaccum someone else mentioned) I heard the staff talking about cabin filters to other customers so I was unsure if they were just pushing it, but in reading these posts looks legit and it should be changed about once a year. Wife said she noticed a difference driving as the inside did not have that smell she had been talking about

Yeah, they have a cabin filter KK4, without it I wouldn't survive "pollen season" here. I change it quarterly. They aren't that much at the Autozone, and once you do it once, its a two minute job at most to change it after that.

Something to remember about the cabin filter.......

many aftermarket and OEM's are impregnated with charcoal, thus the dark gray color. It's best to remove and tap the filter on a work bench or floor to see if the color is from the charcoal or dirt. The charcoal will NOT dislodge.

SOME aftermarket and OEM's DO NOT have the charcoal.

Your link still works. However, the price has almost doubled since your August 2008 post. It cost $23.01 when I checked it tonight! I'm staying with the cheap, eBay paper aftermarket ones that are a "female dog" to squeeze into the space available. I bought four since shipping cost was a big component of the price.
